What happens after formatting?

This is a very interesting feature and you are likely to be flooded with lots information if you delve deeper into the crux of the matter. The deeper you go the more complicated it seems cause more often than not we are deceived into believing facts that don’t exist at all. The myths that surround the very act of formatting and reformatting are erroneous and needs serious revision.



What is formatting?



In common parlance formatting a hard drive is synonymous with complete data erasure of the files and folders that might have been saved on the said hard drive. Data Backup Features for Vista

In today’s world it has never been more important to backup your computer files. Still most people do not think of backing up their data until it’s too late. You need a plan of action before your computer hardware goes out or before your Windows Vista operating system takes a dive.

I don’t have time to re-load and look for all my software discs. I use Vista premium and while Microsoft’s free backup program is nice it does not do the full backup that I want.

Most newer computers have two hard drives in them already. If yours does then consider making one just for the backup of your system. You should never backup the data onto the same drive were the original data is stored. If you do not have a second hard drive then consider paying a hundred plus dollars and getting an external one. Sundays paper is a great way to look for deals on this.

If you had to choose a particular backup program I would say go with Acronis. This is one of the few computer backup programs on the market that lets you do a full image backup and is very easy to use. The cost is the same as most and for the money it is one of the best on the market. Not all people will need a full image backup. If you have many programs installed then you should consider it. Regardless you really need to develop a data backup plan and stick to it. Some day you will thank your lucky stars that you did.

How to Maximize Hard Disk Life

One sign of the hard disk's calibration process is the spin-up and spin -down events. The hard disk recalibrates itself to balance the changes in temperature which is also adjusting the position of data on the platter surface and when the hard disk can not scan the data properly. As a result, if the hard disk recalibrates a lot it might be a symptom of a failing hard disk.

However, take note that there is hard disk that programmed to saves power. In order to saves power the hard disk spin down and when there's work to be done that's the time to spin-up again.

Bad sectors of the hard disk will not cause by insufficient power of power cuts. The head actuators automatically park the heads on every occasion there is power cuts so that the platters won't crashed to head actuators. There is no way that power cuts will cause your hard disk bad sectors but having a bad power supply can fail your hard drive because it will surge the circuit board of it and may fry the motor.

A cheap power supplies do not kill hard drive even slowly killing it. That is a myth. Like any other power supply, when it send and surge the hard disk the disk will be instantly kill.

The truth is current design of hard disk's head actuators are not power-driven by any motor. Previous design of the head actuators are actually powered by a stepper motor. But currently head actuators use the voice coil instrument that uses electromagnetic power to stir the heads. In short, head actuators don't have a motor to fail and not powered by any mechanical motor.

In addition, take note that head actuators' automatically when there are power cuts meaning it is not an active process. Head actuator uses spring to park itself. The spring retracts the actuators when the power is cut while it moved against the spring tension when active.

There is a myth that bad sectors can be repaired once it was reformatted. A bad sector is an area where the hard disk cannot be written nor read properly. It may due to program-related problems that result in a logical bad sector. Bad sectors that are software related can be restores by formatting using any logical repair utility.

But in case the problem is due to eroded media or the hardware is directly damaged. Such physical bad sectors can no longer be repaired using any logical repair utility and formatting it will not restore them. Formatting them, however, can replace those bad sectors with spare sectors.

It is true that formatting will eliminate the bad sectors and will be replace with good sector on the spare section that part of every hard disk. But the performance will suffer because the heads will seek on the spare section in replacements of bad sectors. Bad sectors are signs of bad hard disk. Basically, it means that there something wrong with the hard disk. Bad sectors create debris on the platter and can cause to damage the hard drive.

Additionally, spare sectors are limited on any hard drive. Then once the hard disk runs out of spare sectors, formatting can not replace those bad sectors.

Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown because sensitive information such as unencrypted passwords sometimes ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn’t a high priority, you might not want to clear it.

How to Run a Network Time Server in Windows XP

Time synchronisation in modern computer networks is essential. It not only provides the only frame of reference between all devices, it is critical in everything from securing, planning and debugging a network to providing a time stamp for applications such as data acquisition or email.

Microsoft Windows XP has a time synchronisation utility built into the operating system called Windows Time (w32time.exe) which can be configured to operate as a network time server. It can be configured to both synchronise a network using the internal clock or an external time source.

For many applications, an internal clock can be quite adequate, although, on a network, problems can arise with applications such as sharing network files or in some environments even fraud, so it is vital for security reasons to use an accurate timing source for your network.

NTP (Network Time Protocol) is a protocol already installed on Windows XP and is used by Windows Time to keep machines synchronised to the single time source. There are several timing sources available on the Internet but Microsoft and others strongly recommend that you configure a time server with a hardware source rather than from the Internet where there is no authentication.

Specialist NTP servers are available that can receive a reliable time source via the GPS signal or specialist radio transmissions that get their time from atomic clocks.

If you wish to configure Windows XP to operate as a time server then first thing is to locate the Windows Time subkey. To do this: Run Regedit (Click start/run/then type REGEDIT/and click enter.

Note: editing your system registry can cause problems with your system. It is advisable to back up your system before editing the registry.

Now locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\parameters\ Right click the right-hand side and click Modify. In the Edit Value box, under Value Data, type NTP and then click OK. Now go to the Config folder and right-click AnnounceFlags, Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type 5, and then click OK.

Locate this subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\

Right-click in the right-side window and Modify. Edit the DWORD value box and type the number of seconds you want for each poll under Value data, i.e.: 900 will equal 15 minutes. The poll field represents the polling interval between NTP poll packets.

To enable the NTP server locate the subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer\ Right click enabled (in the right-hand window) then Modify. Edit the DWORD Value and type 1. Right-click NtpServer, then Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type Peers, then click OK.

Locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Base, click Decimal, under Value Data, type a time in seconds such as 3600 (an hour) then click OK. This adjusts the connection settings.

Now go back and click: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config

In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, then Modify. In the Edit DWORD box under base, click Decimal, under value data type the time in seconds you want to poll such as 3600 (an hour).

Exit Registry then restart windows time service by clicking Start/Run then typing: net stop w32time && net start w32time. on each computer, other than the domain controller, type: W32tm/resync/rediscover. The time server should be now up and running.

Configuring a Windows Based NTP Network Time Server

Computer time synchronisation is highly important in modern computer networks, precision and time synchronization is critical in many applications, particularly time sensitive transactions. Just imagine buying an airline seat only to be told at the airport that the ticket was sold twice because it was purchased afterwards on a computer that had a slower clock!

Modern computers do have internal clocks called Real Time Clock chips (RTC) that provide time and date information. These chips are battery backed so that even during power outages, they can maintain time but personal computers are not designed to be perfect clocks. Their design has been optimized for mass production and low-cost rather than maintaining accurate time.

For many applications, this is can be quite adequate, although, quite often machines need time to be synchronised with other PC's on a network and when computers are out of sync with each other problems can arise such as sharing network files or in some environments even fraud!

Microsoft Windows (2000 and above) has a time synchronisation utility built into the operating system called Windows Time (w32time.exe) which can be configured to operate as a network time server. It can be configured to both synchronise a network using the internal clock or an external time source.

Note: Microsoft strongly recommends that you configure a time server with a hardware source rather than from the internet where there is no authentication.

To configure Windows Time service to use the internal hardware clock, first check that w32time is located in the system services list in the registry, to check: Click Start, Run then type regedit then click ok. Locate and then click the following registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time It is highly recommended that you back up the registry as serious problems may occur if you modify the registry incorrectly, modifications to the registry are done at your own risk.

Note: the following instructions are based on Windows 2000 other versions of Windows may differ.

To begin configuration for an internal clock, click on the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters In the right pane, right-click ReliableTimeSource, then click Modify. In Edit DWORD Value, type 1 in the Value Data box, then click OK Exit Registry Editor

To restart the Windows Time Service click Start, Run (or alternatively use the Command Prompt facility). Type: net stop w32time && net start w32time Then press enter.

To reset the local computers’ time, type the following on all computers except for the time server which must not be synchronised with itself: w32tm �"s

To configure the Windows Time service to use an external time source, click Start, Run and type regedit then click OK.

Locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters In the right pane, right-click Type then click Modify, in edit Value type NTP in the Value data box then click OK.

Now in the right pane, right click ReliableTimeSource, then click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type 0, then click OK.

Right-click NtpServer in the right pane then click Modify. In Edit Value, type the Domain Name System (DNS), each DNS must be unique. Now click Ok.

For Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 only, set the time correction settings to do this locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters In the right pane, right-click MaxAllowedClockErrInSecs, then Modify in the Edit DWORD Value box, , type a time in seconds max number of seconds difference between the local clock and the time received from the NTP server in order to be considered a valid new time. Click OK.

To set the poll intervals locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters In the right pane, right-click Period, then click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type 24 then OK Exit Registry Editor

Click Start, then Run then type the following and press Enter: Net stop w32time && net start w32time

To reset the local computers’ time, type the following on all computers except for the time server which must not be synchronised with itself:

Now go back and click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer In the right pane, right-click NtpServer, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type In the right pane, right-click NtpServer, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type the Domain Name System (DNS), each DNS must be unique and you must append 0x1 to the end of each DNS name otherwise changes will not take effect. Now click Ok.

Locate and click the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\SpecialPollInterval In the right pane, right-click SpecialPollInterval, then click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type the number of seconds you want for each poll, ie 900 will poll every 15 minutes, then click OK.

To configure the time correction settings, locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Base, click Decimal, under Value Data, type a time in seconds such as 3600 (an hour) then click OK.

Now go back and click: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, then Modify. In the Edit DWORD box under base, click Decimal, under value data type the time in seconds you want to poll such as 3600 (polls in one hour)

Exit Registry Editor Now to restart windows time service, click Start, Run (or alternatively use the command prompt facility) and type: net stop w32time && net start w32time

And on each computer, other than the time server, type: W32tm/ -s

And that’s it your time server should be now up and running.

Have you heard of the movie “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”?

Laptop Screen Removal - Here's the Easy Way

Has your laptop screen suffered some damage? Do you need to replace it for some reason? If so, then this is the perfect article for you. Why? Because, I am about to take you through the entire process of removing a laptop screen. I will take you through the simple, step-by-step, process to make the necessary repairs required.

It's really not as hard as it may seem at first. If your laptop has a non-functioning display, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that the problem is really with the screen. Now of course, if the screen is broken it's rather obvious. But just because something is not displaying on the screen does not mean that the source of the problem is with the screen. So the first recommendation is to hook up an external monitor to see if it's really the screen is broken or something else.

Now, before you go out and buy a new LCD screen, make sure you carefully look over the screen that you currently have. The Risk of File Attachments in Email

Email is fine for getting a message across and sorting out meetings, but it can be a bit dull, which is where file attachments come in. For instance, if you see a funny cartoon on the Net that you'd like to share with your mate, by all means send it, but check that it's fine by them first. Their email account may have a limit on such things - they may only be able to accept straight text, or files up to a certain size.

Computer Repair Tips: What to Look For in a Replacement Hard Drive

If your hard drive is having any of these seven symptoms then you must take immediate action to backup your files...

Like the late, great Mr. Asimov said, we shouldn't worry about computers taking over but be more concerned when they fail us and take all our important files with them. A computer's hard drive is the central storage within the system and its failure will bring all practical functions to a complete halt.

If your PC is experiencing any of the following signs of impeding doom then you must run (not walk) and grab CDs to burn backups of all your essential data.

Sign 1 - You hear high-pitched whining, loud clicking or grinding noises coming from the drive

A normally operating drive will make a smooth "whirling" sound as is spins up or down. But if a drive has a grinding or clicking sounds (the Read/Write heads scraping too close to the magnetic platters), then your drive is sick and is on the way out.

Sign 2 - You see the infamous "Blue Screen of Death", repeatedly

BSODs (Blue Screens of Death) are actually called "Stop" errors and they only appear when your Windows system is experiencing severe software or hardware issues. Often BSODs can cured with a careful "Repair Install" of the Windows operating system or by removal of a bad device driver. But if these software fast fixes don't seem stick, then your hard drive is usually on its last legs

Sign 3 - Your computer keeps re-booting on its own

I admit, I have only seen this problem a few times in my 18+ year career and in all instances it was due to hardware issues. Once it was a dust covered motherboard, and another time an overheating processor. But all the other times it was due to bad drives.

Sign 4 - Your system keeps having frequent freezes or hang ups

You are working along just fine, and then suddenly everything comes to a halt. The program freezes up on you. Your mouse and keyboard seem to stop responding. The only solution is to reboot.

Sign 5 - Error message: hard drive is not formatted

This a fun message that you will get when you start up your machine. You maybe able to restart and get it to boot into Windows a few more times but this error is "fur-sure" sign that you drive is very close to death. And by the way don't try to format the drive! You will lose all your data.

Sign 6 - Error message: boot drive or device not found or drive cannot be accessed

This is another favorite of mine. You can check the CD/DVD trays or the floppy drive to make sure no stray disks are stuck inside. You can also check the BIOS to make sure the system is booting from the hard drive first. If all these tests are no-good, then the drive is a goner.

Sign 7 - Errors: Operating system not found or Missing Operating System

This is a bad one. Even the Microsoft technical support knowledgebase has only got a few causes for this error message. Basically your PC can no longer detect the hard drive or the drive is too severely damaged to read (DOA).

What to do if your drive has any of these symptoms:

1) First, listen up, if possible, BACKUP YOUR FILES NOW!

2) Create a boot disk and run Windows Scandisk and set it to automatically fix errors. If it finds more than a few bad sectors then see the point above

3) If possible download and use a hard drive diagnostic program. All the major hard drive manufacturers have free utilities on their websites. Repair what you can and see point 1.

Windows Registry Recovery: A Quick Guide

Sometimes, Windows XP systems fail to start not because of a third party application or a virus but of a corrupted registry. Windows registry is the database of all settings and options of the PC's hardware and software it is consulted each time Windows boots up. If the files in this registry are thus damaged, Windows would not work properly and Windows registry recovery would need to be performed..

Windows registry recovery procedure restores the damaged or corrupted Windows registry files. It enables the system to return its previous state by recovering all the data before the problem has occurred.

The Automatic System Recovery (ASR) is the method commonly used to restore the corrupted registry. In this procedure Windows registry recovery is created via the following steps:

Go to Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Automated System Recovery Wizard. The Wizard starts, displaying first a Welcome screen and then advising that a Backup and the ASR disk will be created. Click Next.

Location for the Backup-file will be prompted. The file size is approximately 1-2 GB so back up the file on the location e:\Backup.bkf.

Click Next and then Finish for the system to start the backing-up process.

Once the disk backup is done insert a blank, formatted floppy disk to store other ASR data. This disk and the backup will be used to restore the system in an event of a failure.

The ASR backup-file and floppy disk can be used to return the system to its previous status. To perform this ASR restore/recovery process, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM and then boot from the CD.

As soon as the screen message: "Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR) ..." is displayed at the bottom, press the F2 key. Insert the ASR floppy disk and then press any key to proceed. System will now format the C:\ drive, reboot and continue with the installation process by starting on the ASR Wizard

On the "Data Recovery Source" screen, confirm the location of the disk backup-file, e.g., e:\backup.bkf. This Backup is used to restore the previous information on the C:-drive. Click Next to complete the Wizard. At the end of this process, Windows registry recovery would be complete.

Recovering for older Windows version however is different from the XP edition. In order to prevent complete loss of data from PCs, it is thus essential that these other systems recovery methods are also studied. To me, one of the most irritating areas where dust and grime accumulate is the laptop screen. This is because the screen is where you view the output of your work, your movies, etc. So any dust on the screen is very noticeable.

When cleaning the display, first you need to turn off the laptop. Again, don ever use abrasive cloth or paper towels to clean your display. You will scratch it and leave more than dust and grime on the screen.

Windows XP - Getting the Correct Time.

All computers need to know the time. Many applications, from sending an email to storing information are reliant on the PC knowing when the event took place. In some environments timing is even more crucial where a single second can make all the difference between profit and loss - just think of the stock exchange.

Most computers have internal clocks which are battery backed, so the computer can still keep time when the machine is off. However, are these clocks really that reliable? The answer of course is no.

Computers are mass marketed and designed for multi functions, timing not being that high on the manufacturer's agenda. The internal clocks (called RTC real time chips) are normally adequate for home computing or when workstations run alone. However, when computers run in a network, then a lack of synchronisation can cause problems.

It may be a minor thing such as an email arriving somewhere before it was sent (according to a PC clock) but with some time sensitive transactions and applications, a lack of synchronisation can cause imaginable problems: Imagine turning up at an airport only to find the airline seat you had bought weeks before was in fact sold to somebody else afterwards as their booking agent had a slower clock on their computer!

To get around these problems most computers on a network are synchronised to a single time source using NTP (network time protocol) this time source can be either relative (a computer's clock or wrist watch) or an absolute time source like UTC.

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) was developed after the emergence of atomic clocks and is a standard time scale used globally, allowing machines all over the world to use a single time source.

Windows XP can easily set the system clock to use UTC by accessing an Internet source for UTC (either: time.windows.com or time.nist.gov). To achieve this, a user merely has to double click the clock on their desktop and adjust the settings in the Internet Time tab.

However, Microsoft and other operating system manufacturers strongly advise that external timing references should be used as Internet sources can't be authenticated, making systems vulnerable to a malicious attack.

If you wish to run a network time server Windows XP, then specialist NTP servers are available that can receive a time reference via the GPS satellite system or specialist national transmissions

To allow Windows XP to operate as a network time server, the NTP service needs to be switched on. To activate NTP simply find the following subkey in the registry editor (regedit): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer\ Right click enabled (in the right-hand window) then Modify. Edit the DWORD Value and type 1. Right-click NtpServer, then Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type Peers, then click OK.

Exit the registry and start windows time service by clicking Start/Run and typing: net stop w32time && net start w32time.; Then on each computer on the network (other than the domain controller which can't be synchronised with itself) type: W32tm/resync/rediscover.

Remember when your PC was fresh out of the box and super-fast? Those were the days, when boot times were less than the time it takes to hard-boil an egg.

Computer Graphics: They're Not All The Same

Graphic images on your computer come in two different forms, raster images and vector images. Raster images are made by programs such as Photoshop and Corel Photopaint. Vector images are produced by Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw. While the results from these different programs can look similar, the ways in which they are made are very different.

Raster images are made up of millions of individual squares, or pixels, of various colors. The more pixels you have, the better the image will look. The number of pixels, or resolution, is usually expressed in dots per inch (dpi). Images on the Web are shown at 72 dpi. A high-resolution image would run 300 dpi or higher. Some types of printing can get into the 1600 dpi range. Much like a mosaic, a raster image can look smooth from a distance but as you zoom in closer you can see the individual pixels.

A vector image is drawn from mathematical formulas for lines and curves and is redrawn each time you zoom in for a closer look. The quality of the image stays the same regardless of the level of magnification. Vector files, since they are formulas instead of information on millions of individual pixels, tend to use less memory than raster files.

The edge of a circle, rendered as a raster image, may look smooth initially, but eventually as you zoom in you will see a jagged stairstep edge of the individual square pixels that make up the image. A lower resolution image will look jagged or pixellated much sooner than a high resolution image. A circle's edge in vector form will always be smooth no matter how close you zoom in since it is recalculated each time you change the view.

Raster based programs are best at working with photo-realistic images and make subtle (or bold) changes in color, shadow and texture. Vector based programs excel at easy control of edges and tend to produce a more graphic style of art. Regardless of the type of image, higher resolution is always better for producing a good result. Early Vintage Computer Buses Have Their Influences On Your Computer Today

The term “expansion bus “is a frequent term in vintage computer terminology which requires elaboration. Much of the legacy of vintage bus systems are in our current computer systems today.

To begin with the “expansion bus" is a data highway for computer data information to travel on: the bandwidth is in essence the number of lanes. The bigger the bandwidth the more data can be sent. As examples, an 8 megabyte bandwidth means that data can be sent in 8 bits chunks. Our current systems use between 32 bit and now 64 bit bandwidth.

An expansion bus is where cards connect to the computer; Cards have an expansion edge, which fits snugly into the bus much like an electrical plug fits into a wall socket.

When cards are plugged into the bus, they communicate with the system, sometimes through the BIOS and others not. (The BIOS is the basic input /output system that tells the computer how to move data from the different components.) The 8, 16 or 32 bit bandwidth is an important consideration due to communication time between the cards. For example you have a 16 bit vintage 286 PC and it is sending out data at 16 bits a: your video card is also 8 bits. If you have an older 8 bit bus, such as in early IBM PCs and clones, the bus will become a bottleneck in the system; it is like having a 4 lane highway connected to another 4 lane highway by way of a 1 lane road. At most times regardless of the faster 4 lane highway traffic will be slow – limited by the single lane connection road.

There were basically 3 types of expansion bus available in vintage computers: ISA, MCA, EISA systems.

Each early development in major ways paved the way for the later systems which indeed we take for granted today. This was both in terms of hardware and basic concepts in our computer systems and technology as well as computer marketing that we take for granted today as simple basic facts of life without any consideration due.

Basically the newer buses offered increased performance over the older technology buses.

The basic explanations of the buses are as follows:

The 3 bus standards to note were Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) .Micro Channel Channel Architecture (MSA) and Extended Industry Standard (EISA) bus systems.

Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). This was the original AT bus also called an ISA bus. It was the original 8 bit IBM PC bus which was bumped up to 16 bits at some point in its later development. Fine for a 16 bit 286 or very early 386 computers

Micro Channel Architecture (MSA). This was an early 32 bit bus system which was not received well but set the stage for an industry consortium of the major non IBM computer manufacturers ( at the time referred to as “The Group of Nine) to develop the EISA standard bus.

Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA). The EISA bus standard was a standard of its own right which was 32 bit, included bus mastering and importantly remained compatible with previous older expansion cards. 32 bit systems were first to incorporate in later 386 systems. The 486 line solidified and standardized the 32 bit systems in the established software of the day.

Backward compatibility at the time was a novel new concept which has remained an important consideration in the computer industry.

EISA slots would accommodate both the ISA and EISA expansion slots to allow hardware upgrades, However the EISA expansion boards would be of little advantage and would seldom work in the older ISA expansion slots.


On the other hand the Micro Channel setup was not backward compatible. On the one hand the Micro Channel developers were free to initiate new radical changes in computer development and hardware which would have allowed for major new useful features in computer software. However owners of previous systems would have been left with then obsolete vintage useless hardware which would have been of no use and certainly little financial value.

Hence there was a lot of resistance to the Micro Channel bus setup.

It died a lingering death with its legacy living on in the aspirations of features offered in future developments and standards.

Thus the die was set for future hardware standards and software function as well as standard computer marketing concepts that we take for granted like mother’s milk today.

Upgrading computer memory involves increasing the RAM of your computer, so the first thing you have to figure out is the type of RAM the system uses, how it's configured, and how many RAM slots you have available. The CD copying uses technology from Roxio and enables you to use CD-R and CD-RW discs as if they were giant floppy disks. The system also supports DVD-RAM drives.

Windows XP also includes a new version of Media Player, which will play DVD movies if you buy the additional Decoder Pack, and the useless Windows Movie Maker returns with a slightly better interface.

Performance and Stability

Every time Microsoft updates Windows it promises better performance, but with Windows XP they are actually telling the truth. The system is based on the rock-solid code of Windows 2000 rather than the unreliable Windows 9x, crashes are rare - and if one program does pack up, it won't take your entire system down with it.

If you switch off all the annoying special effects - XP chugs along at a reasonable speed. For everyday tasks it isn't faster than either 2000 or Millennium, but demanding tasks such as audio or video rendering are quicker.

To address any problems, Microsoft has included three new features, two of which will be familiar to Windows Millennium users: System Restore, System File Protection and Device Driver Rollback. System Restore enables you to take a snapshot of your hard disk - if things go wrong, you can simply restore your system from the snapshot.

File Protection prevents the accidental deletion of important system files, and Device Driver Rollback is designed to help you deal with device driver problems by giving you the option to return to an older driver if an updated one causes problems. However, XP also includes a feature called Driver Blocking that may prevent you from using older software such as firewalls or anti-virus software that isn't designed for XP.

Because both XP Home and Professional use the same system code, the same hardware drivers will work on both systems. The included Internet Explorer 6.0 is prettier than on non-XP systems and can be upgraded to Version 7 when installing updates. An integrated Media Bar enables you to use Windows Media Player without leaving the browser windows.

XP includes a firewall that can protect your computer from online threats and two new features - Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop - make it easier for tech support to access your machine over a network. Multiple computers can share an Internet connection.

Buying a Selecting the Right laptop that you can use as a personal assistant

Don't be surprised but buying a laptop can be even harder than buying a desktop computer. In fact, buying a computer is very straightforward. Laptops, however, are very personal stuff because it's something that you will carry around with you and sometimes act as more than just a computer for you to work on. They become a companion! That's why finding and selecting the right laptop can be very tricky.

Hard core computer gamers or people who will use their laptops for designing or video production may need more help than just reading about buying laptops. For conventional laptop users, here's something for you to digest.

The price for laptops varies drastically from brand to brand. Some laptops can cost $500 while some laptops can cost you $6,000. Some entry-level (meaning basic laptops) can be bought for between $600 and $900. If you grab a laptop off eBay or other rebate or drop shipping websites, you might get a mid-range laptop for far less than that.

Even for basic laptop users, the description and specifications for the laptop is very, very important. If you're not sure, check around and ask your friends for advice on how to buy a good laptop for the lowest price possible. You should be getting a laptop that comes with AT LEAST 512 megabytes of memory. The size of the memory ensures that your laptop can run multiple programs smoothly. As for hard drive, invest in as big a hard drive for your laptop as you can afford. Another thing that you may have to look out before you invest in the laptop is to find out how many USB ports that the laptop has. Most laptops come with at least 2 USB ports, the more the better. If you use a camera or thumb drive (disk key), this is where you insert the cable - the USB ports. You don't want to have to remove the USB cable for your printer and mouse every time you try to save pictures from your camera to your laptop! Some laptops come with slots for camera memory cards, for instance, your compact flash cards.

If you're keen on getting a Windows based laptop, the security of your laptop should be at the top of your priority lists. Windows SP2 XP should be ideal because it comes with antis Pam, antispyware, antipopes and antivirus programs. Some laptop retailers may offer you cheap or free programs that you can install into the laptop as a second layer protection to your laptop.

Other factors to take into account when shopping for laptops are the screen size, the life of the battery, the processor of the laptop, screen and keyboard, wi-fi networking, size and weight of the laptop.

How Computer Viruses Work And How To Protect Your Computer

Many people are afraid of tinkering with their computers because of the fear that they might inadvertently introduce a computer virus into the computer system.

Computer viruses have become the technological bogeyman that scares computer users all over the world. We have all heard of how dangerous computer viruses are and how it can damage your data. Of course, aided by the bloated images Hollywood movies paint with regards to computer viruses, a big majority now have this insane (but mostly unfounded) fears about it.

It is true that computer viruses are dangerous. Anyone who has lost vital information in their computers because of a computer virus will know how big a damage it can cause. But computer viruses are not these insidiously little pieces of code that could wreak havoc on the world. If you know what to do when you get a virus in your computer then you can definitely limit, if not totally stop, the damage it can cause.

But what is a computer virus? Well, it is a software with a small imprint that would usually attach itself on to a legitimate program or software. Every time this program is executed the virus is also executed and it tries to reproduce itself by attaching to other programs or it immediately starts affecting the computer. A computer virus and email virus basically have the same modus operandi, the difference though is that an email virus would attach itself to an email message or automatically send itself using the addresses in the address book in order to infect the people who receive the email.

A computer virus is usually embedded in a larger program, often a legitimate piece of software. The virus will be run when the legitimate software is executed. The computer virus would load itself into the memory of the computer and then it will seek out any programs where it can likely attach itself. When a likely program is found then the virus would modify the file in order to add the virus’ code to the program. The virus would usually run before the actual legitimate program runs. In fact, the virus would usually perform the infection first before it commands the legitimate program to run. This process is so fast that no one would even notice that a virus was executed. With two programs now infected (the original program and the first infected program), the same process would be repeated whenever either program is launched worsening the level of infection.

After the infection phase, or even within the middle of the process of infection, the virus would usually start its attack on the system. The level of attack can range from silly actions like flashing messages on the screen to actually erasing sensitive data.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can do in order to protect your computer from viruses. Among the steps that you can take are:

* The simplest way to avoid a virus is to install a legitimate and effective antivirus program in your computer. The antivirus program is designed to look out for any kind of activity that could be seen as similar to a virus attack or infestation and it automatically stops it.

* You can opt to use a more secure operating system in your computer. For example, Unix is a secure operating system because the security features built into it prevents a virus from actually doing what it is programmed to do.

* Enable Macro Virus Protection in all of the Microsoft applications resident in your computer. Additionally, you should avoid running macros in a document unless you have a good idea of what these macros are going to do.

* Avoid using programs that you have downloaded on the internet especially when they come from dubious sources.

* Never open an email attachment that contains an executable file – these are files with the EXE, COM and VBS extensions.

What the heck is Spyware?

Spyware is a generic term for programs that install themselves on your computer without telling you that they are there. They run in the background tracking where you go online and sending the information off to the company that built the program. Hence the term “Spyware” or Spying Software.

The reason for spyware being built originally was to use it as a marketing tool. If you know where a person surfs then you can target advertisements toward that person based on their surfing habits.

Newer spyware programs are becoming more malicious and harder to remove than they were before. This is where the term Malware comes in . . . or Malicious Software. The term “Malware” also refers to Trojans or Virus depending on what it does.

So how do I get it off my computer?

In most cases spyware removal is a fairly simple process. There are some excellent Free Tools available to help keep your system clean.

For best results I suggest using more than one. Also, it is good to plan on doing a cleanup/spyware removal at least once a month to keep your computer in top working order.

The tools I find work best are (in no particular order):

Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware
Microsoft Spyware Removal Tool

These are all free tools and work well in conjunction with each other.

(Special Note for the Microsoft Spyware Removal Tool: If you do not have a Valid copy of Windows XP you will NOT be able to install this. Microsoft implemented a Validation Test to check for illegal copies of Windows XP.)

So now, we'll break down the steps to keep your computer spyware free and in excellent running order. If you follow these steps your computer will run much faster. After many years of doing cleanups this is the fastest way I know of to complete this process. You can do it in any order but the time it takes to complete will vary. On a reasonably new machine, a complete cleanup and spyware scan usually only takes about an hour if you follow this order.

Steps:

1. Create a Folder on your desktop called CLEANUP

2. Open your browser and go to: http://toddarsenault.com/cleanup.html, or download them directly from the internet.

3. You can download the tools used in this article there.

4. Download a copy of Adaware.

5. Download a copy of Spybot.

6. Download a copy of VoptXP (Only program that is not free.)

7. Download a copy of RegCleanerXP.

8. Download a copy of CrapCleaner (sorry . . . I didn’t name it)

9. If you do not currently have an Antivirus program, please feel free to download a copy of Avast from http://www.avast.com It is a free and excellent Antivirus tool.

Now . . . what do we do with all this?

1. Open your CLEANUP folder and install VoptXP first.

2. When that is complete install CrapCleaner. (You can leave all the settings default when you install these programs.)

3. Run the CrapCleaner program and click on Analyse. This will take some time depending on how many junk files are on your computer.

4. Once it is done analysing your computer click on the RunCleaner button. This will eliminate all the junk files that windows tends to store.

5. Close the CrapCleaner program now and open VoptXP.

6. Click on the Checkmark to Analyse your hard drive.

7. Once that is complete Click on the button to the left of the checkmark. It looks like a stack of rectangles.

8. Do not run any other programs while this is running. VoptXP is defragging your hard drive.

a. Just a note on why I suggest using VoptXP: You can use the defrag program that comes with XP if you prefer, Vopt is just faster at defragging a drive. This is not a FREE program but will work for 30 days.

9. Once the defrag is complete close VoptXP and reboot the computer.

10. Now install Adaware and Spybot.

11. We are going to run Spybot first for a couple of reasons. It immunises the computer and does a registry backup before making any changes. It will also ask to update the files . . . please do this as you will want the newest definitions to catch all the spyware.

12. Once Spybot has completed scanning it may ask you to reboot or tell you that it could not clean all the spyware. If it asks to do a scan on reboot, say Yes.

13. Now we want to run Adaware. Whew . . . seems like a lot of work when I type it ;-)

14. Adaware is fairly easy to work with. Simply click on Start when it loads. You don’t have to change any settings. When the scan is complete you do have to right click on the spyware found and left click on “Select All” – Then simply click the Next or Finish button.

If you followed the steps above your computer will be running faster and your surfing habits won’t be being tracked by spyware.

With the ability to have CRM available for everyone, though, people who work with customers can find information quickly and efficiently, and those customers can feel valued and appreciated. This is something that businesses cannot pay for, but that is still very valuable.
