The Doom of the Hard Disk Drive

Flash memory may not be taking over from your regular hard disk in the near future, but it could still be playing a significant role before long.

The hard disk has been with us for longer than you'd realize. The first examples materialized back in the 1950s, and the IBM Winchester format which we still essentially use today arrived in 1973. Since then, pundits have predicted the hard disk's doom more than once. With the rise of Flash memory in mobile devices, which have been pushing down unit prices, it is expected that solid state disks (SSDs) will take over from the mechanical variety sooner or later. But while there are no signs of this happening just yet, there is new technology bubbling under which could see Flash memory taking a greater role in PC storage.

Drive Time

The spectre haunting HD technology is the 'superparamagnetic effect'. This supposedly sets a limit on how small the magnetic grains on a hard disk can be. Below a certain grain size, the temperature raises enough to reverse the magnetic polarity of grains. This makes the hard disk unreliable. For the time being, the superparamagnetic effect is being held at bay by new developments like perpendicular recording which allows the use of larger grains by stacking them on their ends perpendicular to the hard disk surface. With traditional recording, grains run parallel to the disk surface, so take up more room. In the long run, though, perpendicular recording will only delay the hard disk's execution.

Flash memory also requires much less power than a mechanical disk. Additionally, Flash offers much lower access times than those of a hard disk. As a result, Flash hard disks offer boot up times 25 - 50% quicker than conventional hard disks. On the down side, Flash memory is still only available in fairly meager capacities, and those are hideously expensive.

Mix and Match

SSDs have their good and bad side compared to HDDs. This has led to a new idea; why not use both at the same time. Samsung was the first to publicize the concept, and has been talking about its Hybrid Hard Disk (HHD) for the last 2 years. This bolts 128MB of Samsung's OneNAND Flash memory onto a regular hard disk. The Flash is used as a buffer, storing write tasks until it is full. Only then is data written to HHD. This way, during times of light usage, the hard disk can remain idle or even in sleep mode for much longer. Samsung claims this reduces power consumption by an average of 9%.

Seagate's Momentus 5400 PSD takes a similar approach, but uses twice as much Flash (256MB). Seagate maintains the greater capacity reduces power consumption by as much as half.

Since Flash maintains its data without power, it's an ideal place to store part of the hibernation file. Seagate argues this reduces recovery time from hibernation by 20%. Using a flash buffer can also extend the life of your hard disk, which is usually measured in terms of the average number of hours it can be in use before failure occurs.

Despite Samsung being the first to publicize the HHD, it was developed with Microsoft. In fact, two technologies within Windows Vista will make use of it. ReadyDrive is what Microsoft calls support for HDs within Windows Vista and a driver will be needed to manage the process. But Microsoft has a more surprising take on the hybrid idea, too. In recognition of the ubiquity of Flash RAM thumbdrives, Windows Vista will also contain ReadyBoost, which anyone can use. Instead of having the Flash cache built into the hard disk, ReadyBoost can use a thumbdrive instead.

Perhaps the most viable version of the hybrid idea is the one Intel is currently calling Robson. Instead of relying on the hard disk or third party add on for the Flash memory, Robson places it directly on the motherboard, connected to the Southbridge via PCI Express. That way, any disk can be used, and you don't have to worry about compatibility issues.

The benefit of ReadyDrive is to power consumption, so it's aimed primarily at portable computers. But with 4GB already being launched for ReadyBoost, the hybrid idea is starting to have clear implications for the desktop PC as well. So perhaps the SSD will take over from the HDD as has been predicted for so long - just in a slightly more surreptitious manner than we originally expected.

Disk Backup - What You Should Know

Protecting the information on your hard drive is critical whether you’re an individual or part of a business. Take a moment and think about every irreplaceable file you have saved on that hard drive right now. Now imagine if everything was suddenly gone because of a virus or hardware malfunction or a software issue. What would you do? Answering that question is simple if you understand disk backup.

What is Disk Backup?

Disk backup refers to a number of different methods you can use to protect the files stored on your PC. The most common method used today is making a copy of the hard drive and all its content periodically. This copy is then saved either on a CD (or a DVD if the hard drive is large) or on a separate hard drive partition. For maximum protection, you might even save the copy in both locations.

For example, if you are using a laptop, your equipment could get stolen. Everything on your hard drive would be in the hands of someone else. You’d never be able to recover it. However, if you’ve made a copy and saved it on a disk, you’ll be able to restore the information when you get a new laptop or if your old one is finally recovered.

You might also have your computer infected with a virus that either wipes out the hard drive or damages it so that you can no longer access the information stored there. If that happens, you still have a copy of the hard drive that you can use to restore it once the problems have been corrected.

Doing Disk Backups

Another issue with disk backups is when to do them. Having the software or program necessary to protect the data is one thing but actually using it is another. Generally, you should get in the habit of doing periodic disk backups. The frequency of those backups depends on several factors, including how much new data is saved on that hard drive during a specific period of time. For example, if you rarely use your computer then you might be fine doing a disk backup every three months or longer. On the other hand, most users would need to preserve their hard drive data monthly or even weekly.

No matter what application you’ve decided to use for disk backup, setting a scheduling for this process and sticking to it is critical.

6 Quick and Easy Ways to Speed Up Your Computer

A slow computer can be a real pain. You always have to wait for it to start, to run applications and sending data. Even if you have a real behemoth of a computer, you could end up in the evil swamp of tired computers. Every time you download something, install a new program or even make a new document you also clog up your computer's natural computing resources, and you wouldn't want that to happen, right? 'Cause if you do want that to happen don't read this. Below are 5 simple steps in which you could get that computer running in a higher gear: 1. Clean your hard drive. If you have unused programs or documents you no longer read, you should consider removing them to increase the overall performance of your computer. A litter free computer is a happy computer!

2. Defragment now and then. Defragmenting takes files scattered around your computer and compress them, so that it will find them quicker. You should have a built-in option for defragmenting, located in your Start menu or the like. Depending on your operating system it should lay under a System Tools option. Look for Disk Defragmenter.

3. Removing temporary files. Temporary files come in different shapes, ranging from Internet files like cookies and search history to files you have sent to deletion. Removing temporary Internet files and other privacy data from Firefox is easy: simply click the Tools tab and then Clean Private Data. Check all the files you would like to remove and click Clean Private Data Now.

4. Cleaning the Registry. Every program you run results in a Registry entry. As you remove programs or stop using them these entries becomes a waste of computer space and resources, as they are read by the computer over and over again. There are many free programs to help you clean the registry. Do a simple search for "Registry Cleaner" and you'll find plenty of programs that can do the task for you.

5. Removing malware. Malware is all unwanted programs, including viruses, trojans, worms, spyware and adware. These none wanted pieces of utter litter clogs your computer's data resources. This results in an unstable and slow computer. Always try to remove them and keep you protected from them. They are threats to your privacy and your computer... Schedule a frequent virus scan with your default anti-virus program (you do have one, right?). Install a spyware and adware remover. One of the most popular programs to do this is called Ad-Aware. Search for it and you should find a download link to it.

6. Empty the Recycle Bin. This equals taking out the trash, we all know the positives of doing that: more space and less of a burden. Tip: There are many programs around the Web which claims to be a solution for your slow computer. In fact, downloading and running these programs can be both dangerous, if it contains bad things like viruses and spyware, and even add to the problem. Although the "Super Cleaner, Defragger, Speeder, Trimmer, Optimizer Mega Software Program"* can be useful and solve some of the problems of a slow computer, it shouldn't be entirely relied upon. Be Cautious!

Bad Laptop Motherboard - To Repair or Not to Repair

To sit down in front of a laptop computer, a model you have never worked on before, and to attempt to figure out how you are going to dismantle it, and then put it all back together again, can be a little unsettling. This is the scenario I have faced many times when my diagnosis have led me to the fact that the laptop in question does indeed need a new motherboard. The motherboard going bad in a laptop is not an extremely unusual occurrence, but it is going to be one of the most expensive hardware repairs that a laptop owner can face.

I always recommend that the owner of the laptop stop and weigh out the options. Is the cost of the repair, (parts and labor), going to be more than a new, used or refurbished replacement laptop would cost? If the repair cost is less than the cost of a new laptop, how much less is it? Is the difference worth taking a chance on the old one? Maybe the laptop, with a new motherboard, will last for several more years. Maybe after the motherboard is replaced a stick of RAM or something else decides to go bad, and a sense of a money vacuum sets in. Ultimately it is up to the owner of the laptop to decide on how to proceed.

In my experience, if the laptop is not all that old and otherwise functions properly, then the cost of parts and labor is just a fact of life and would ultimately wind up being the most economical way to go. I do like to mention also that a new laptop will come with a warranty of usually at least a year. This helps put a stop to the potential money vacuum of repairs, but new laptops can have motherboards go bad also. Then there is the cost of time that it takes for the laptop to be repaired under warranty.

Parts going bad are just a fact of life. It happens in vehicles, home appliances, audio video equipment and computers. Laptops do not sit nice and stationary like a desktop computer does. Laptop cases are built to be quite sturdy from the outside. They are taken into many different environments and often “tossed around” slightly, but they are designed to be treated this way to a point. Although there are no moving mechanical parts in a laptop, other than fans and drives, the design of the circuitry on a motherboard is actually rather sensitive to heat and power fluctuations.

It is a good idea to keep laptop computers free of dust as much as possible. You should especially make it a point to keep the vent areas of the case that cover the laptop fans free of any form of dust or blockage. A vacuum or even a can of compressed air are adequate for keeping this area free of dust. Only use the proper rated power adapter for the laptop. Be weary of unstable power sources or plugging the laptop into an already over crowded power strip if possible. These simple tips will help to prolong the lifespan of your laptop.

LOOKUP Function in Microsoft Excel

In contrast to the VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP functions in Excel, the LOOKUP function has two forms: vector and array. The following is a brief description of the differences in the two approaches.

Vector Form

Under the vector method, the formula you create will look for the cell you target, within a range of information (a single row or column) with the result you seek in some other range of information (another single row or column of same size as the first). Let us say hypothetically that you have a list of fruits whose sales prices vary by month, and you are curious as to the price of bananas in the month or March. We will assume that your list of fruit names is in column A beginning in row 3 with data through August (column I). Thus, the entire range of data is within A3:I9. We would like to get the data for March, which, in this case is in column D. This means that the LOOKUP formula would be:

=LOOKUP("Banana",A3:A9,D3:D9), to yield the price per pound of bananas in March. This would tell Excel to find the word "Banana" in the range of fruit, and whatever placement number within the column results, that same placement number will be used in the range for March to return the desired result. Similarly, if you wanted to find lychee values for August, the formula would be:

=LOOKUP("Lychee",A3:A9,I3:I9), to yield the price per pound of lychee in August.

To increase the efficiency of using this method, particularly if you have a lot of columns representing data for multiple years, is naming the columns. For example, if you name A3:A9 "Fruit_Range" and I3:I9 "August_Data" then the formula for the lychee example we just reviewed becomes:

=LOOKUP("Lychee",Fruit_Range,August_Data)

or

=LOOKUP(A8,Fruit_Range,August_Data), where the cell A8 contains the word lychee.

Why is this important? If you have a situation that requires looking up 1,000 fruit names across 36 months of data, the copying and pasting becomes more efficient when you need to create summary reports. This will be covered down the line with other articles, but just keep in mind that when you develop spreadsheets, efficiency and flexibility should be main drivers behind how you construct a financial model.

Array Form

The array form is very straightforward, in that you can either setup a long formula with specific references or highlight a set of data that comprises the range of information you are using. A simple example would be:

=LOOKUP("k",{"a","d","k","z";3,6,9,12}), which would find "k" in the array defined by "a","d","k" and "z" and return the appropriate value from the array defined as 3,6,9,12, and in this case, the answer would be 9. You could also have =LOOKUP("kangaroo",{"a","d","k","z";3,6,9,12}) and the result would still be nine. The point here is that if it is not a specific match, similar to VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, Excel looks for the largest datapoint smaller than or equal to the reference value ("kangaroo", in this case). Finally, you could write this equation in the equivalent form of =LOOKUP("kangaroo",{"a",3;"d",6;"k",9;"z",12}). Note that the arrays could be flipped, to have Excel search a number lookup and return a letter or lookup a number to return another number or any assortment of combinations. As long as the arrays have the same number of values, you will not get an error message.

The other method I referenced relates to grabbing a range of data. For example, if you have colors listed in column A with unit sales data for four days in the subsequent columns, the entire range of data is comprised in the area defined by A2:E6. If you wanted to know how many units were sold on day 4 of oranges (with "orange" in cell A6), you would enter the following formula:

=LOOKUP("orange",A2:E6) or =LOOKUP(A6,A2:E6), and the correct result would be displayed.

I have not used this form of the LOOKUP function, and it seems easily replaced by VLOOKUP. In addition, another drawback of this method is that if your column inputs (first column) are greater than the number of total columns you have in the data range, you will get a false answer (you can test this by creating a simple table as outlined above and adding a column "F" with data, changing the range to A2:F6 and you will get the answer "orange" instead of a number").

Another drawback to this method is a drawback of the vector form, too. There is no option to tell this formula to find the exact data point as in the case of VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP. There are ways around that, but for now, this standalone function will always find the closest value only.

Finally, either form requires the first column data to be in ascending order or the results may be correct. Based on the prior paragraph, you must make certain that the data is in ascending order or you will need to rely on another method to do the lookup you need.

While I do not use either of these functions extensively, the vector form is my preference if I have to use one or the other. Once you make the range reference absolute (the dollar signs in front of the letter and the number, like $A$2:$E$6), you can insert rows or cells and the values will maintain their correctness. Early Vintage Computer Buses Have Their Influences On Your Computer Today

The term “expansion bus “is a frequent term in vintage computer terminology which requires elaboration. Much of the legacy of vintage bus systems are in our current computer systems today.

To begin with the “expansion bus" is a data highway for computer data information to travel on: the bandwidth is in essence the number of lanes. The bigger the bandwidth the more data can be sent. As examples, an 8 megabyte bandwidth means that data can be sent in 8 bits chunks. Our current systems use between 32 bit and now 64 bit bandwidth.

An expansion bus is where cards connect to the computer; Cards have an expansion edge, which fits snugly into the bus much like an electrical plug fits into a wall socket.

When cards are plugged into the bus, they communicate with the system, sometimes through the BIOS and others not. (The BIOS is the basic input /output system that tells the computer how to move data from the different components.) The 8, 16 or 32 bit bandwidth is an important consideration due to communication time between the cards. For example you have a 16 bit vintage 286 PC and it is sending out data at 16 bits a: your video card is also 8 bits. If you have an older 8 bit bus, such as in early IBM PCs and clones, the bus will become a bottleneck in the system; it is like having a 4 lane highway connected to another 4 lane highway by way of a 1 lane road. At most times regardless of the faster 4 lane highway traffic will be slow – limited by the single lane connection road.

There were basically 3 types of expansion bus available in vintage computers: ISA, MCA, EISA systems.

Each early development in major ways paved the way for the later systems which indeed we take for granted today. This was both in terms of hardware and basic concepts in our computer systems and technology as well as computer marketing that we take for granted today as simple basic facts of life without any consideration due.

Basically the newer buses offered increased performance over the older technology buses.

The basic explanations of the buses are as follows:

The 3 bus standards to note were Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) .Micro Channel Channel Architecture (MSA) and Extended Industry Standard (EISA) bus systems.

Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). This was the original AT bus also called an ISA bus. It was the original 8 bit IBM PC bus which was bumped up to 16 bits at some point in its later development. Fine for a 16 bit 286 or very early 386 computers

Micro Channel Architecture (MSA). This was an early 32 bit bus system which was not received well but set the stage for an industry consortium of the major non IBM computer manufacturers ( at the time referred to as “The Group of Nine) to develop the EISA standard bus.

Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA). The EISA bus standard was a standard of its own right which was 32 bit, included bus mastering and importantly remained compatible with previous older expansion cards. 32 bit systems were first to incorporate in later 386 systems. The 486 line solidified and standardized the 32 bit systems in the established software of the day.

Backward compatibility at the time was a novel new concept which has remained an important consideration in the computer industry.

EISA slots would accommodate both the ISA and EISA expansion slots to allow hardware upgrades, However the EISA expansion boards would be of little advantage and would seldom work in the older ISA expansion slots.


On the other hand the Micro Channel setup was not backward compatible. On the one hand the Micro Channel developers were free to initiate new radical changes in computer development and hardware which would have allowed for major new useful features in computer software. However owners of previous systems would have been left with then obsolete vintage useless hardware which would have been of no use and certainly little financial value.

Hence there was a lot of resistance to the Micro Channel bus setup.

It died a lingering death with its legacy living on in the aspirations of features offered in future developments and standards.

Thus the die was set for future hardware standards and software function as well as standard computer marketing concepts that we take for granted like mother’s milk today.

After the infection phase, or even within the middle of the process of infection, the virus would usually start its attack on the system. The level of attack can range from silly actions like flashing messages on the screen to actually erasing sensitive data.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can do in order to protect your computer from viruses. Among the steps that you can take are:

* The simplest way to avoid a virus is to install a legitimate and effective antivirus program in your computer. The antivirus program is designed to look out for any kind of activity that could be seen as similar to a virus attack or infestation and it automatically stops it.

Configuring Parental Controls in Windows Vista

6. Once you add the name of the account, you will want to ensure that there is a dot next to "Standard Account".

7. Now, you will want to go to the bottom of the page and press "Create Account". You will then be redirected to the "Manage Accounts" page. In the box, you should see the new account that you just created.

8. Now, you are ready to create a password for the account that you created. Simply identify the link that says "Create a Password". You simply create a password, enter it, and then enter it again. Now, click the "Create Password" button.

9. Now, you will want to click on "Setup Parental Controls". Click "Continue" if you get a permission manager box.

10. Now, you will set up the controls by selecting the account and then turning controls "On".

11. Click "Enforce Current Settings".

12. Now, close out of all Windows.

You have successfully configured Windows for parental control. This is a basic way of ensuring that the account that is used by your children while they are using the internet. The first step in building a computer

Before you begin, you need to clear your head and relax. If you don't, you might make some mistakes. A good list of basic tips - Frustration will end up breaking parts. Be very gentle, and remember that nothing will fit that isn't supposed to.

Do not leave your parts on carpet! Unless you like your parts extra crispy from electrostatic discharge, I suggest you keep them as far away from sources of static electricity such as carpets, long haired cats, and fur coats.

Remove Case Cover This is a very easy step. Basically, you are just taking the cover off your new case. If you have a standard case, you take a screwdriver and remove the four or six screws located around the edge on the back of your case. Hang on to these screws and put them in a place where they will not be scattered and can be easily found later in this procedure. Once they are removed, the entire case cover comes off in one piece. With this design, the front of the case (also known as the bezel) does not move. Only the top and sides come off as a single cover.

Some cases use thumb screws rather than standard screws. It works the same way, obviously, except that you do not need to use a screwdriver to loosen and remove them. Simply twist them loose using your fingers.

Still other cases come apart differently. Some manufacturers have developed cases using a "screw-less" design. These cases are designed such that you can remove the cover simply by un-latching the parts from the chassis. With this design, you usually take hold of the bottom of the front bezel of the case and give it a nice solid yank. The front then pulls off. It is my experience that this usually requires a few tries and some muscle. These cases are usually pretty durable so you really don't have to worry about hurting them. The sides then lift and slide off as does the top. Your case, in essence, comes apart in four pieces. Other cases come apart in a similar way, but after you take the front off, the top and sides come off together.

Each case is a little different in how it comes apart. There are almost as many designs as there are companies that make them. You may find some where you don't even have to remove the front, and rather you just slide the sides off. With others, you can remove the whole motherboard mounting plate and card rack combo from the case by sliding it out the back. This is convenient for making quick changes to the system, although you still have to disconnect the various cables to get it out all the way. Whatever case style you have, remember to look it all over before you attempt to gain entry. You don't want to force it and break anything - take your time. Now that this is done, you are ready to move on.

6 Tips to Save on Your Printer Ink Cartridges

Buying a printer is a one time cost, but since printer ink cartridges need to be bought on a regular basis, the cost of operating the printer and maintaining it in proper condition can add up. 1) Print only what is necessary

Be a Computer Genius in No Time

Modern boards use plastic stand-offs to which the board simply snaps into place or is fastened to by ties. Older PC casings use brass ones that need paper or cardboard washers for the task. There may also be an issue with the alignment of the board itself (there was an issue with Gigabyte boards sometime back that had the whole board sagging in one place of the other which prevented the memory modules from seating properly. Use plastic tie-downs where a plastic tie is used to pull the board into alignment to solve this type of problems.

Next, check if the power supply has a switch at the rear if it is on (older models) and see if it works. Check for any foreign metal objects that may be stuck between the board and the case which is shorting it out, again the protection circuit would prevent power up to avoid damage to the various sensitive electronics. A faulty motherboard fan can also be causing the problem so check the fan if it works. You might have also forgotten to connect the power button to the board (along with the reset button) so check that too. A shorted reset switch can also keep the board in a state of permanent off, unplug it to see if that works.

Some motherboards are so sensitive to cooling that no fans connected to the on-board fan connectors would prevent power-up to avoid ruining the processor (this would be the case if you were using externally powered or special/exotic cooling systems) try plugging in a fan or two to see if it works. The worst case is to get the lights and fans working but still there are no beeps, display or other signs of life for it may be a signal of a dead board or power supply.

If your bare systems now functions, you can then add your components one at a time so you can continue to eliminate any problem device. The prices of computer parts have indeed gone down so much that they are affordable to most. If one does not want to spend all the time tinkering and wondering what is wrong then a trip to the computer repair shop would be an easier alternative.

If you by chance got yourself a good deal on a second-hand computer that works just right and is affordable enough o allow you to upgrade some parts then you indeed got a good deal. As you get home, you setup your prize and power-up only to find that the system is locked down by a password. A boot password or worse a system password can prevent access to the contents of the hard drive or the system itself leaving you stranded in the boot-up menu. Don't fret, for there are ways to get around the problem and these work almost all of the time in getting you up and running in no time at all.

First, if you can get hold of nifty utilities from trusted sites of the internet, then that would be easier but it can sometimes corrupt the bios of the system as it forces a program to open the said part of your computer system so be cautious and read all recommendations and instructions in the readme file so you don't cause further problems.

If you're in a hurry and don't have a second computer to do a search, you can always consult the motherboard's manual or simply look at the board for any pins that are labeled BIOS reset/normal. This is a failsafe mechanism which is built in by manufacturers into their boards to allow use of a locked system as yours.

How To Downgrade Your Laptop From Vista To XP

Now the first question you might be asking when you read this article is 'Why would anyone want to downgrade their laptop from Vista to XP?' There are many reasons, but the most common one is speed and stability. Windows Vista is noticeably faster than Vista on the same hardware. Also, Windows Explorer crashes more often in Vista than in XP.

In this article we will take a look at how we can downgrade Vista to XP in the simplest way. There are actually a few options for doing it, so we will run through three of them here.

Option 1: Perform A Windows Recovery
One way to downgrade to XP is to perform a Windows Recovery. Now, this approach is more convenient because you don't need to wipe out your hard drive. The flip side is that it is generally not as 'clean' as the other option (the Start from Scratch option below).

Let's look at what you need to do:

Back up your entire hard drive. The first and most important thing to do is to back up your entire hard drive in case anything goes wrong with this process. If you have Windows Vista Business or Ultimate, there is a Complete PC Backup and Restore tool you can use. Also, make sure you leave Several free GB of hard disk space on the boot drive after performing the backup.

A safer (and my preferred) way is to copy your data onto an external hard disk. You can easily copy it all back once XP is up and running. Ensure that you back up the entire C:\Users folder, which will include your Documents directory, your desktop files, plus application data such as e-mail.

Back up your entire hard drive. The first and most important thing to do is to back up your entire hard drive in case anything goes wrong with this process. If you have Windows Vista Business or Ultimate, there is a Complete PC Backup and Restore tool you can use.

Boot up using your Windows XP disc. Insert your Wnidows XP disc into your optical drive and turn on the laptop. You can then press the spacebar when you see the message Press any key to boot from CD .... Now, if you don't see this message, you need to go into the laptop's BIOS setup screen and change the boot options. Your CD drive should appear before your hard drive in the boot sequence list.

Open the Recovery Console. Once Windows XP Setup starts, you should press R on the first page and open the Recovery Console. When asked to choose a Windows installation, type 1 and press Enter.

At this point, you might be asked for the Administrator password. This is where it gets a bit tricky. If you don't know the Administrator password, you can get it this way:

  • Boot back into Windows Vista
  • Open the Start menu, type lusrmgr.msc and press Enter
  • Open the C:\Users folder
  • Double-click on the Administrator account and turn off the Account is disabled option
  • Open the Start menu again, type Control userpasswords2 into the Search box, then press Enter
  • Click the Reset Password button, choose a new password, and start over

That gives you the Administrator password and you should be able to proceed with the downgrade.

Prep your hard disk for XP. Next, we go back to the Recovery Console command prompt, and type the following commands.

fixboot
fixmbr
cd \
ren windows winvista
exit

Allow your laptop to restart, and boot using your Windows XP CD again. The Windows XP setup will start normally.

Move your documents. Once the Windows XP setup completes, you will have a working Windows XP operating system. However, you will need to move some files manually. Most importantly, these would be your documents, the your desktop contents, as well as any other data in Vista's redundant C:\Users folder into XP's C:\Documents and Settings folder. You'll also need to reinstall all your applications and device drivers, and eventually delete the abandoned C:\Winvista folder.

And that's it ... if you've followed through this far, you will have downgraded Windows Vista to Windows XP successfully, without re-formatting your hard drive.

Option 2: Start From Scratch
The second way to downgrade to XP is to start from scratch. This method has the advantage of being a very 'clean' install. That is, your laptop won't be loaded with remnants of Vista, mixed up with XP. Everything in there will be pure Windows XP.

Here's how we do it:

Back up your entire hard drive. As before, the first step to do is to back up your entire hard drive in case anything goes wrong with this process. Just copy your data onto an external hard disk - you can copy it back once XP is up and running.

Perform a Clean Windows XP install. The procedure here varies widely, depending on your laptop. You should consult your laptop's manual for details. Typically, the laptop software will wipe out the hard drive and put in a preinstalled copy of Windows XP onto the drive. This image should come with all the drivers and demo software that you got with your laptop when it was first purchase.

When the install is done, simply hook up your backup drive and copy your files back.

Option 3: Dual-Boot Configuration
Now, consider a third option. What if you have some essential application or device that simply won't work with Vista. You also don't want to downgrade to XP. What do you do in this case? One option is to perform a dual-boot. Be warned, however, this option is an advanced option, so you should have some idea of dual-booting before you try it out.

You will be installing XP alongside Vista, so you'll need a second hard drive, or a second partition on your primary drive.

You should start off booting from a Windows XP Setup disc, then install the operating system on that second drive. Once you have done that - DO NOT panic when Vista won't start. Just simply reinstall Vista's boot manager. Boot off your Vista Setup disc, and click Next on the first page. On the Install Windows page, click Repair your computer. You'll be prompted to choose between Windows XP and Vista each time you turn on your laptop.

Right! I hope this article has given you some idea of how to downgrade from Windows Vista to Windows XP. The downgrade does indeed make good sense if you're having problems adjusting to Vista. However, you should also take into account that new software is being tuned for Vista. And legacy Windows XP support will disappear very soon.
