Easy Tips on How to Make Computer Run Faster

Computers, regardless of their shape, size, colour and brand, will always become laggy and slow as time progresses. Don't be surprised when your sparkling new PC deteriorates in the processing speed department. All these usually happen when you fail to give your computer the proper maintenance it deserves. After months, or even years, of working for you, you should definitely consider giving your computer a break and give it some well deserved maintenance. Below are some easy tips on how you can make your computer run faster.

Most of the times, what a slow computer needs is more Random Access Memory (RAM). RAM is a very important component in the computer. A bigger RAM means that there will be sufficient space for you to run all sorts of application regardless of their memory needs. On the other hand, a small RAM will slow your PC down, as it will be heavily strained trying to find the memory required to run a particular application. This is also the reason why having a larger RAM capacity will allow you to process all programs and data at break-neck speed. All you need to do is go RAM shopping and grab a RAM that is bigger. Doing RAM upgrades is definitely a good thing. However, it is advised that you should only perform RAM upgrades when you have ascertained that the root of your PC problem is that of insufficient RAM size.

Another way to make your computer faster is by cleaning your registry. The registry might not be very well known to all computer users. But despite its understated position in the PC hierarchy, the registry holds a very important role in determining the ability of the PC to function. The registry, unlike the RAM, is a software construct. It stores all login information like your personal data and personal status setting of your software. The only problem with the registry is that it is unable to delete any information. Instead, it gets overwritten many times, and you will eventually end up with a huge junkyard of corrupted login datas. To prevent this mess from occurring, you can simply use a registry cleaner to delete unwanted and corrupted files. Registry cleaners like RegCure and CCleaner are just some of the more popular registry cleaners that are commonly used.

Another step is to run a quick and easy computer check up. There are plenty of free computer checkups available online. There is no need for you to fork out big money to run a simple computer check up. The advantage here is that some of the better online checks will enable you to find some of the errors, viruses and spyware that might be present in your PC and will also clean it from your computer. These pesky viruses and spyware can use up precious RAM. Just remember to install an anti-virus and anti-spyware software once you are done with your computer check up.

Everyone should be able to enjoy an optimized PC experience. Regular computer maintenance is essential in ensuring a trouble-free, silky-smooth computer-using experience. Try these tips to bring out the best in your computer.

Tips on Buying Desktop Computer

Whether your old computer is shot or you have never bought a computer on your own before, you may be feeling a little bit nervous about the whole thing.

Buying a computer represents putting down a fair chunk of your hard earned money, and you may be nervous about getting a computer that isn't a great fit for your needs.

The truth is, getting a good desktop computer that suits you is easier than you think, and by simply keeping the following tips in mind, you'll be able to find the perfect computer that will keep you happy for years to come.

    1. Know what you want your computer for
    2. Think about how you use your computer. Are you someone who only uses a computer for its word processing ability, or do you prefer to stay up to date on the latest games.

Maybe you are someone whose entertainment is largely focused around your computer; all of your communication and your movies are kept on your computer. By keeping a clear idea of what you need your computer for, you will be able to get the right machine.

    3. Know what RAM is
    4. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and you will find that what it does is affect the speed with which your computer "thinks," that is, processes action. If you are only using your computer for things like surfing online or writing, you'll find that a RAM of 512 MB is okay, though 1GB is ideal.

You'll find that this size will give you room to expand or grow if you want to later on, but that it's not so big that you are wasting your money. If you are going to be gaming, or doing advanced computer programming with your unit,, you will of course want more.

    5. Don't worry so much about hard drive space
    6. Your hard drive space generally refers to the amount of information that you can keep on your computer, ranging from written work to audio and visual media.

You'll find that if you download a lot of videos that this can be eaten up fast, but in desktops, you'll find that it is very easy to add some more. Remember that while you do have a finite amount of space that it is all in how you use it.

    7. Online or from the store?
    8. You'll find that ordering online is actually a lot cheaper, but keep in mind that you should have a clue about what you are looking it. If you choose to build a computer yourself, you'll find that it is much easier to get the parts online.

At a store, though, you will find that you can often take the time to look over the specs, speak with a sales representative and take a look around to see what else is available. It really depends on what you are comfortable with.

If you are looking to buy a desktop computer, remember that you really need to think about what you want it for. Once you have the function decided upon, it is very easy to figure out what machine will be perfect for you.

Top 3 Tips for Selling Your External Hard Drive

A portable hard drive is almost a must for personal computer users. Just like the hard drive that resides in your computer, the storage capacity of an external hard drive has risen in the last few years. With the rapid storage changes, it is no wonder that people are often looking to upgrade and sell their old hard drives. People eventually find that they need a new hard drive when they have run out of space or something happens to their old one. When users need to get rid of their old hard drive upon arrival of a new one, they often do not realize they may be able to sell it. Selling your hard drive is a great way to get some money that you can put toward what you spent on your new one. Selling it is simple, but you must make sure that you take the right steps in order to keep your privacy and maximize how much you make.

Get Your Hard Drive Wiped

If you are considering selling your portable hard drive, there is one step that you should always make sure you do. When you have removed all of the files you want from your old external hard drive, you should have the hard drive wiped. The process of wiping effectively wipes clean your hard drive so that none of your files on the hard drive can be seen. The process deletes everything, making for a fresh and new hard drive. This is a necessary must for two reasons. Most importantly, you want to wipe your hard drive because you do not want personal files to be given to someone else. Also as important, however, is offering a clean hard drive as a top selling point.

Ask for a Reasonable Price

You will not get back what you originally paid for when selling your portable hard drive. Knowing and accepting this basic fact can help you come up with a reasonable price to sell it at. Many people will balk at a price that is simply too high. Since you probably did not have to pay for the hard drive to get wiped clean, you should not try to talk this cost onto the user, as they will find another hard drive that is cheaper to purchase. Just type in to a search engine “how to wipe your hard drive,” and you will see many free solutions that will only take up your personal time.

Use the Internet

The Internet is the easiest and fastest way to get the most out of your external hard drive sale posting. By putting it up for sale online through auction websites, you are opening up your sale to the entire world, allowing anyone across the globe to bid and purchase it. You may also want to use the ever-popular craigslist.com, since it costs nothing to advertise products for sale.

When you follow these simple steps, you will effectively create sort of a process, if you will. By receiving a little cash, you may be able to better afford (if you haven’t purchased one already) the size of portable hard drive that you are looking for. Selling may take a little time, but being patient may land you that much more money.

Tips For Selecting The Best Windows Registry Repair Utility

These days we can do a lot of things on the computer and the Internet. Things that we can do on the computer include shopping; banking, creating and processing some documents, and playing movies, music and games.

It is therefore important to have a reliable and safe computer that has good performance. Windows registry errors can develop without any notice. The installing and un-installing of software, games and file on the registry is the common cause of registry problems because some files fragments or bits and pieces can be left on the registry which then affect the performance of the computer.

If your computer is running slow and is having frequent crashes, it is a very likely that your Windows registry is corrupt. However, it is essential that you run your virus and spyware program in order to ascertain that your computer problems are coming from the registry and not some viruses. If your Windows registry has developed some problems, it is a very important for you to get them fixed as soon as possible.

Frequent crashes, slow speed and error messages are some of the key indications that you need to fix your Windows Registry files. Today there are many registry repair programs that are available on the Web. It is therefore very important that you select the best Windows registry repair tool that is reliable and powerful.

This brings us to the important question. What must you look for in a Windows registry repair software? The Windows repair software must have a back up option so that you can save your registry before the repair begins. This is important because it means that you can return to the old registry files if there are any files that you need.

It is also important that the software which you will use to repair your Windows registry has an interface that is easy to use. This will help you to carry out the registry cleaning process easily and quickly, regardless of your knowledge and experience in computers. When you have registry problems, you want them fixed fast and for good.

The registry cleaning software must therefore have many features and options, which you can select during the process of cleaning the Windows registry. The registry cleaner must also do a free initial scan and list all the faults that are in your registry. This will help you to know that indeed your registry has problems, and you will also know the errors which the registry repair utility will be working on.

It is also essential that on line support is provided for the software which you will use. Although you are not likely to encounter any problems, it is just good to know that help is available if you need it.

Few Tips for Donating a Computer

Disposing of the computer system after buying the new one is the common work performed by the users. But there is better ways of doing the same deed-to donate. You can donate the system to the one who is in a real need. May be the system is worthless for you due to the degraded performance but the same can prove as the valuable assest for another person or organization. There are some guidelines or tips which you can use when passing along the systems:

* First check out whether the system is really usable or not. This can be judged on the age of the computer, if this age is less then chances are there that it can be put into use by someone else.
* The broken or the old hardware should be tagged for recycling then. A computer recycler is a business or organization that salvages useful computer parts before breaking down what's left, safely removing hazardous materials in the process. Determine if your old computer can be reused.
* If possible, try to keep the operating system intact. This will prove worthless if the system is not in the proper running condition as then the organization would have to spend money to get it running and usually the charitable institutions have not such amount of finance to spend.
* If the computer's hard drive had ever possessed any of the personal information then it is best to use the drive-wipe utility to get rid off permanently. Your personal information includes your internet browser's cache, cookies, history; your email contacts and messages; your documents; your bank account information; your recycle or trash folder; and all nontransferable software. The best way to clear this is with a drive wipe utility that overwrites all the sectors of your hard drives, making your data unrecoverable.

Wipe hard drive is the technique which has overridden the usual formatting and other data deletion methods. Actually the data deleted through either of the process remains over your hard drive and can be accessed through the use of data recovery software. But the drive wipe technique is the master of all and makes the recovery impossible by overwriting the data through arbitrarily passing the streams of binary data over the existing one.

Now the question is why to take these precise steps? Actually the data after moving from your hands can become a threat for you, if gets recovered by the criminal hands. History is littered with the incidents in which the leak of information has made some organization to halt. So this becomes important to wipe hard drive before donating the system.

The drive wipe is an easy task performed by the drive wipe software which makes use of the powerful algorithms to overwrite the data. But choosing the best one is recommended in order to avoid further problems.

Stellar Disk Wipe is the utility which is trustworthy in each case. Seeking the criticality of your personal data, the software has been designed to use up to 35 passes. The user is free to select among the drive wiping algorithms.

This drive wipe software comes in the form of a bootable CD and you need not to install the same. The software is able to wipe all types of files including the locked systems files.

Tips for Furnishing Your Home computer

The computer in itself is not a complete thing and to make it complete lot many things have to be compiled together. The computer furniture is one thing without which the existence of a computer can not be imagined. When it is about the computer furniture the list of components will be quite long, for which a brief discussion will be required.

Things that falls within the range of the computer furniture are the computer table or the stool, the chair, mouse pad, rakes, printer stands, etc. depending on the environment and the situation the computer furniture changes. For designing up an elegant office suit the computer furniture too must have an elegant touch on it. These should be stylish and expertly moulded as the computer used in it is also elegant in look. A computer can be used in several places for several purposes. For example, the offices, the computer shops, the technological institutes and households.

Based on the environment the furniture is designed to house the computers. Also based on the type of the user these are placed, take for instance the furniture for a computer class in the children’s class will be different. These may be colorful, small in size and designed to hold two to three children a computer each. The same thing to an extent will prevail in a home where the computer is kept in the room of the kids. The furniture will be small in size and will of course be colorful. There will be drawers in the desk too to hold the other things. While for an adult the furniture will be very simple but stylish. Depending on the style, look and size the prices of the computer furniture varies.

That furniture specially designed for the kids are very less in price as these does not need much material. But whatever it is, these prices are not a less one. For getting this furniture in low prices the only means are to wait for the discount offers, for the festive seasons to get these in lower price and the used furniture. The used furniture is usually very less in price as these are once used by people and then are sold out. The problems with this furniture are not many but are very few. Even sometimes these are just like the new ones but are sold as second hand because these have been used for a period. The furniture that is used for holding the other computer related materials are also regarded as the computer furniture.

The files, CD disks, DVD disks; everything falls within the computer materials and for holding these certain locked or open rakes are used. Whether used or new, the computer furniture are something that are anytime in demand. When the prices are a bit low than the usual ones, these furniture gets sold out immediately. The type and design matters a lot while decorating a home and therefore the effort should be on the purchase of the best computer furniture.

5 Life-Saving Safety Tips When Using Social Networking Sites

In the new world, social networking is the buzz word. Social networking trend, quite literally, is a tsunami in the virtual world and capturing everyone's imagination. While they add value to a person's life, encourage the exchange of information, they are also a perfect medium for cybercrime.

Sexual abuse, identity theft, and similar distasteful crimes are driving the fun out of social networking sites. When a 14-year old girl, who was active on social networking site MySpace.com, started receiving graphic messages from a man much older than her, asking her is she was OK with him being 38-years old, it wasn't the first time for an alleged sexual predator to prowl the communities of the virtual world for sex. But the authorities decided to step in and assuming the girl's online identity started chatting with that man. During these exchanges, the man made it very clear that he wanted to meet the girl for sex. Fortunately, the cops also found another similar aged girl that the man had previously had sex with, and were able to nab him and charge him with multiple counts of sexual assault. However, this disturbing incident is only one of the numerous cases reported from across America " and some of them have had tragic endings. While such cases are not limited to MySpace.com, it's important for parents to monitor their children's activities on these sites on a regular basis. The American law does provide protection by giving parents (in case of children) the control over the kind of information that their kids can release over the Internet. For example: sites that cater to children below age 13, as well as for general audience social networking sites that allow children below 13 to participate, there's the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The COPPA requires these social networking sites to ensure parental consent is given before they accept or use children's personal information. Basically, the COPPA empowers parents the authority to review their kid's various online profiles as well as blogs.

However, the COPPA is made to protect children below 13. For teens and adults, it's important to understand how various social networking sites work and thus, ensure their own personal security and safety. While there are several safety tips that must be kept in mind, here are the 5 most important life-saving tips for all social networking

5 Life-Saving Safety Tips When Using Social Networking Sites

The most important tip is to evaluate your social networking profile and postings. Before posting, stop and think. How do you feel about your parents or elders or strangers seeing your profile? NEVER post private information such as your home address, cell phone or landline number, social appointments, or name of school, college, or workplace unless you are prepared for the predators lurking on these sites. Second tip is to read the rules and regulations and advices offered on social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and follow them as closely as possible. You must utilize the ‘Privacy’ settings of your Facebook account to allow only friends and people you can trust to access your personal information.

Thirdly, you must never accept friend requests blindly. Always check the profile and personal information provided by the person requesting your friendship. Many people post incorrect information on their profiles and mislead other members. Remember, that many users pose as someone else and take advantage of this aspect of these sites and attract or sexually exploit people.

Fourthly, never give out your profile password to anyone expect for your parents or siblings.

And finally, never meet anyone you have only met on social networking site in person. They may not be who they say they are!

Web promotion tips and an effective Internet marketing strategy.

Having a Web site is great, but it is meaningless if nobody knows about it. Just like having a brilliantly designed product brochure does you little good if it sits in your sales manager’s desk drawer, a Web site does you little good if your target market isn’t visiting it. It is the goal of this book to help you take your Web site out of the desk drawer, into the spotlight, and into the hands of your target market. You will learn how to formulate an Internet marketing strategy in keeping with your objectives, your product or service, and your target market.

4 Step to promote your website

Designing Your Site to Be Search Engine Friendly

Creating a site that is search engine friendly should be an objective of every company that wants to do business on the Internet. Search engines are the most common way for Internet surfers to search for something on the Net. In fact, 85 percent of all people who use the Internet use search engines as their primary way to look for information. By using keywords relating to your company in appropriate places on your site, you can improve how search engines rank you. You want these chosen keywords in the keyword meta-tags as well as in each page’s description meta-tag. Some of the other places where you want to have these keywords are your domain name if possible, your page titles and page text, your Alt tags for graphics, and your page headers. Many search engines place a lot of emphasis on the number and quality of links to a site to determine its ranking. This means that the more Web sites you can get to link to your site, the higher your site is shown in search engine results.

Search Engine and Directory Submissions

There are billions of Web pages on the World Wide Web, so how can you increase your chances of being found? One method is submitting your Web site to the many search engines and directories. Once you’ve optimized your Web site to be search engine friendly, you are ready to face the challenge of submitting it to the most important search engines. By “search engines,” I’m referring to the combination of search engines, directories, spiders and crawlers. You need to be within the first two pages of search results to ensure your best possible success online.

The E-mail Advantage

E-mail is rapidly becoming one of the most crucial forms of communication you have with your clients, potential customers, suppliers, and colleagues. E-mail is now a widely accessible and generally accepted form of business communication. We are seeing a huge increase in commercial e-mail volume. The reason for this significant increase is understandable given that e-mail is a very cost-effective, time-efficient tool that has a high response rate. E-mail is used to build your community online, sell products and provide customer service, reinforce brand awareness, and encourage customer loyalty.

Add Value with Affiliate Programs

Another way of benefiting from links to your Web site is by developing an affiliate program. Affiliate programs (also called reseller or partnership or associate programs) are revenue-sharing arrangements set up by companies selling products and services. When another site agrees to participate in your affiliate program, it is rewarded for sending customers to your business. These customers are sent to your site through links on your associates’ or affiliates’ Web sites. By developing and offering this type of program, you generate increased business and increased links to your site and increased link popularity for search engines.

10 Tips on How to Buy a Hdtv Makes it Easier to Decide on the Best HDTV to Buy

Since a HDTV is not as expensive as a while back, more and more consumers spend their money towards the latest wide screen craze - a high definition (HD) flat screen television. More and more people are becoming aware of the terms LCD, HDTV and Plasma and for especially the younger working generation the main question is not if they will spend hard earned cash towards a HDTV of choice but when they will spend it.

1. Realize that your HDTV purchase will give you a product that should under normal circumstances last up to 20 - 30 years. Rather buy a HDTV tv of higher quality so that it will not be outdated within 10 years.

2. Realize that technology products are becoming cheaper than ever to manufacture and that the market response drives the prices down at a phenomenal rate. Buying the more expensive model may not be the best HDTV to buy.

3. Realize that you may suffer severely from self-inflicted injuries kicking yourself afterwards if you have not taken the time (about 2 minutes) to learn what makes one HDTV better than the next one.

4. Know the difference between the main types of tv screens: CTR, LCD and Plasma and each of their advantages and disadvantages.

5. Know that the higher the resolution of a television screen the most likely the quality of the display may be better than a HDTV with a lower screen resolution.

6. Know that the television screen is made up of tiny particles that display color. These particles are calls pixels. The more pixels fitted into a screen, the higher the resolution.

7. Know that there were major technological advances made towards the way that the tv screen manages the pixel colors to create better flowing movements. Choosing an older type may make your "new" tv age faster and you may have to replace it earlier than you might have expected to.

8. Know the latest display type, called a progressive scan type as well as that "interlaced" refers to earlier technology. Of these a number of 1080i would refer to the term "interlaced" and 1080p would refer to a "progressive scan" television.

9. Know that a bigger screen size not always refer to a better television. Other than knowing the effect of screen resolution on your budget, you will become aware of the fact that bigger costs more but does not necessarily means better picture detail. Just a quick warning - do not put a very large screen in a small room. The larger the screen the further you have to sit from it.

10. A higher Color-depth constitutes a wider assortment of colors that can be displayed. The more the merrier. A 2-million pixel resolution is a minimum I would recommend.

Considering both the fact of the risk you are taking if you buy the first HDTV that you see (because you may fall in love with it), and the fact that the prices are coming down the longer you wait, then ultimately you are safer waiting but then if you never make the decision you may loose out on the experience of HDTV.

If you are in for an upgrade you may as well get up to date with the ins and outs of LCD HDTV screens and HDTV Plasma Tvs.

Top Ten Tips For Computer Security

Have you ever wondered why there is a huge increase in online fraud? Well the main reason its happening, is that most computer users are not protecting themselves properly.

When you follow the top 10 tips for online and offline protection, you will discover were your computer system weaknesses are.

1. It is a proven fact that 75% of American PC users do not use an up to date anti-virus program, this is a program that scans the PC searching for any malicious software, when it discovers them they can either quarantine them or delete them. Some AV programs even scan sites you visit and detect any phishing sites.

2. Phishing sites are websites that have been created to look similar to a bank or payment processor such as PayPal. We have all received the emails from our bank stating our account is empty and to log in immediately, the hyperlink in the email you click on looks real, however the site you are taken to is fraudulent, they are after stealing your money! Always make sure your banks website has a padlock image on the toolbar, this shows that it is a secure site for logging in. If you have any doubts contact your bank immediately.

3. We all need a firewall to hide behind. This is a piece of software that prevents anyone hacking into our computers, either at home or at work. Once the software is set up it runs in the background. It basically blocks the ports on our computers that hackers use to gain access through the back door. Like the AV, there are plenty of free firewalls.

4. Is your computer operating system up to date? When did you last update it? Most people will answer, never. The main reason software manufacturers such as Microsoft provide updates, is to plug any security vulnerabilities in the software, this is why when they issue an update, its wise to update your system.

5. Check any public computers you use, as there are products out there called key loggers, this is an electronic device that logs all keystrokes and can be downloaded. So if you use the library for your online bank or eBay, make sure the keyboard lead connects directly into the computer, if it connects to an extra piece of cable, it could be a key logger. The person who put it there only has to download the information and they have all your details and access to your money! Always log out and do not save any passwords on a public computer - Ever!

6. Check public WiFi connections are public! Make sure it is not just another computer acting as a gateway, so you pass your details to them such a credit card and address, then they grant you access to the internet. While you are sending emails, they are using your credit card details to purchase products online!

7. Do not share games, as this is how some viruses were transferred from computer to computer. Always run your anti virus software to scan the disc first.

8. Do not let anyone one use a flash drive on your computer, as soon as someone plugs a flash drive into a computer a virus could be transferring to your computer, this may or may not be done on purpose, but the problem is still there, it will take information from your computer and can even email it from your computer, at a later date!

9. Physical protection at home and at work, this is essential for preventing your computer and the data stored on it falling into the wrong hands. The PC enclosure is a special steel box, that has been designed for protecting computers, so heating and security issues has been addresses, these units are fully welded and normally bolted to walls, (this is how banks protect their computers).

10. Physical protection on the move is essential for laptops, so Kingston Security offers the best option, this is a high grade steel cable that locks into the laptop and ties around a leg of a table, this prevents your personal information being stolen along with the laptop, in a smash and grab robbery.

Follow these simple steps and your online and offline security will be safe.

How to Restrict USB Flash Drive to Virtual Machine

Knowing how to restrict a USB flash drive to a virtual machine operation can be highly useful and help your applications to be more secure.

A virtual machine is essentially a software program that imitates a hardware program. According to the Computer Desktop Encyclopaedia, this is a "traditional virtualization technique that enables different operating systems to run in the same computer as well as to prevent applications from interfering with each other. Each virtual machine is like a 'machine within the machine and functions as if it owned the entire computer. The operating systems in each virtual machine communicate with the hardware via an abstraction layer called a 'virtual machine monitor' (VMM) or 'hypervisor'. The operating systems run without modification unless they use the para-virtualization method."

Virtual machines are very useful for these three applications:

1. Eliminating the need for a whole new computer to run an application that requires a foreign OS.

2. Running development and production programs at the same time so that if the program under development crashes production is not interfered with.

3. Using multiple production virtual machines to protect against interference or corruption from the simultaneous running of allegedly safe and secure commercial applications without the need to run multiple servers.

Restricting a USB flash drive so that it is used as a virtual machine is an ideal way of using a flash memory drive. You would first want to partition your USB flash memory drive so that you can simultaneously run two different applications: one is a software writing application and the other is an already existing application. Once you have your USB flash memory drive partitioned, you can then apply it as a virtual machine for all three of a virtual machine's main functions. This is especially useful if you are a computer tech.

If you are trying to troubleshoot a computer that would require you to access a foreign OS the flash drive can be made use of. If you need to make use of code, that writing program may crash frequently, but that won't affect your other running program. And, you can rest assured that your flash drive's data won't be corrupted by any corrupted data on the computer.

Another great point to keep in mind about using your flash memory drive in this way is that this creates a synchronous operating of multiple operating systems; this is not a mere multiboot or dual-boot system that you effect.

As databases grow and more applications with more diverse operating systems are developed, the use of virtual machines is likely to become ever more important and widespread, and the USB flash memory drive, with its data compression and portability, will likely grow ever more useful as a facilitator for the easy creation of a virtual machine environment.

Knowing how to restrict a USB flash drive to a virtual machine operation enables you to access multiple "streams of consciousness" at once without fear of them causing each other to crash or be corrupted.

Hard Drive Recovery- All Things to Know About

Hard drive is the primary data storage device, mainly a fixed data storage device which uses to store the data on the magnetic surface layers of the hard drive platters. These platters are rotating through the shaft, attached to the electric motor which is responsible for giving momentum. The main purpose of hard drive is to store the data and the writing phenomenon is carried out by the electromagnetic flux, emanating from the read/write head. The read/write head lies at micron distances from the platters and changes the polarity of the magnetic material to write the information. Now when reading the data comes, this is the read/write head which is responsible for sensing the electrical changes. This is when the magnetic fields are passed and the platters rotate.

What is Hard Disk Failure?

Hard disk failure is the condition when either of the components of the hard drive is behaving differently from what has been expected. As a result, the hard drive refuses to operate properly and hence the data retrieval is practically impossible.

This can happen when the read/write head shows the improper behavior, circuit board malfunctions, platters do not rotate as expected or in other different scenario. Either of the malfunctioning is the threat to the data.

There could be many reasons like exposure to the fire, sharp impacts, high magnetic waves and similar alike. Some of them, which originate from nature, are completely unavoidable.

What is Required?

Well, the data backup is the key remedy to resist the dramatic changes in your life due to the lost data. You can store the relevant data, on the regular basis, on some other storage media.

While if you are too busy to do this or lack of the significant resources, then the proper care of the hard drive is a must. As soon as you observe that the hard drive is behaving or sounding, different from usual, turn off the system and call for the hard drive recovery experts.

Do not attempt any data recovery attempts at your own, as they are to be done with the specialized knowledge only. The hard drive may get more damaged with the inapplicable techniques.

Hard Drive Recovery

This is the category under which the hard drive is widely analyzed with the proper treatment in the Clean Rooms environment. Then based on the results, the corrective measures including that of replacing the damaged components etc. are taken and then hard drive recovery procedures are moved on. The data recovery experts are those who retain all the skills and knowledge to test the failed hard drive and obtain the data at the maximum level.

Data Disk Drive Recovery Seagate

If you have a Seagate hard disk drive you will want to know how it works and what can be done in order to restore your files in case there are any problems with it. When you need data disk drive recovery, Seagate has what you need to help you with a multitude of problems, one of which includes data recovery for all models of their hard disk drives.

Some of the symptoms that can help to identify a failing hard drive including a Seagate one are: clicking, scratching, ticking, grinding sounds and the drive not working. Other symptoms which can start occurring after some type of power surge are, not powering on, not having the ability to spin, freezing or locking the computer, corrupted segments, accidental reformatting, unable to access the drive, error reporting that the master disk failed, and the disk asking to be reformatted. These problems and more are usually fixable by a hard disk data recovery expert who knows how to recover data from all types of Seagate hard drive models.

Often times when you take your failed data disk drive to a computer expert, the quickest solution is to replace the failing hard drive. More likely, only the failed components of the disk drive will need to be replaced and in a clean environment. The most typical failed components in Seagate data disk drives are the drive motor and the read/write heads. These can be replaced quickly, sending you back on your way.

Data recovery does not work in all models of data disk drives, but depending on the severity of the problem, a hard disk data recovery expert will be able to recover your important data that you may have lost during the problem, or just did not have access to because of the problem with your data disk drive.

If you want to avoid further problems with your Seagate data disk drive you will want to put a backup system into your computer routine. You can always use the old standards of CDs or other rewritable storage, or you can use the services of an offsite data backup and recovery services. Either way, you will be able to prevent any further damage or loss to your data files if your disk drive happens to fail again.

And if your data disk drive does fail again, you may want to check with data disk drive recovery that Seagate will help you choose a different disk drive to replace your old one. Then you will see significantly less problems in your day to day usage of your computer and all of the components.

DIY Hard Drive Recovery - Last Resort Techniques

There are a few things you can try to do yourself to recover data from a hard drive that has failed. You never know what you might be able to do.

Keep in mind that none of these techniques are a good first option. They should only be attempted if you want to risk losing or destroying the hard drive, and your data, further than it might already be destroyed.

DIY hard drive recovery preparation

To prepare for DIY hard drive recovery, you'll want to connect your broken hard drive to your computer and also have another hard drive ready and connected. The other hard drive (a working drive) will be your data dumping drive, the one that you will move your recovered files to if you actually manage to pull off some sort of DIY data recovery.

Your secondary hard drive could also be your internal hard drive in your computer, just make sure you have enough space on your extra drive to store the data you might recover from the dead drive.

One chance

In most cases, you'll probably only get one chance to recover the data if you use the DIY hard drive recovery techniques discussed in this article... so keep that in mind.

Hard drive controller board swapping

This technique consists of removing the controller board from a working hard drive of the same make and installing that controller board onto the drive that has failed.

If it is indeed the hard drive controller board that has failed this will give you an avenue to work around this particular failure issue. If this swap is unsuccessful, you very well could ruin both hard drives, so consider that circumstance.

Hard drive spindle motor spinning

Sometimes a drive will fail because the spindle motor refuses to spin, or it sticks. This can commonly be a problem with old hard drives. If the spindle motor sticks, you can actually open up the drive and try to spin the disc manually.

After opening it up, spin the hard drive disk a few times manually and then see if it fires up and works. This will compromise the cleanliness of the hard drive altogether, but hey, this is a last resort technique, right?

Repeated hard drive booting

If a hard drive is suffering from problems that might be sporadic, you might be able to get it running just by trying to boot from it repeatedly. Yes, this might sound kinda ridiculous and simple, but it can work. If you manage to get the drive booted, hurry up and copy as much stuff as you can while it's running.

Freezing the hard drive (ha!)

It's long been a rumor that freezing dead hard drives can get a little more life outta them. This has been somewhat proven to be true and many people will swear that it works.

The idea here is that if the hard drive is physically damaged to the point where internal parts are pressing against each other, causing the drive to not work, freezing the drive will contract the metal and other materials to free everything up and get you a few minutes or more of use from the drive.

Please note that this will probably not permanently fix a drive, but it might repair a "clicking" drive momentarily so that you can retrieve critical files from the failed hard drive. Ask around, you might find that others have actually been able to make this work!

When all else fails

Of course, the best option is to seek professional help. If you are not finding yourself wanting to take these risks, that is probably a good thing. But for the do-it-yourself type of person, these techniques could get you started in the right direction.

How To Avoid Accidental Breakage Of Your Notebook

Notebook also called as laptop is an extension of desktop computers. It is smart and slick in look, light in weight, consume less power, make nearly no noise and most importantly can be easily carried to anywhere. In fact due to its portable feature as well as with the advent of Wi-Fi features, usage of notebook has been increased rapidly in the last few years.

You do not need to get entangled with wires while accessing internet. Just carry your notebook and enjoy working from anywhere you feel like. Sounds awesome right? Earlier notebook was considered to be a luxurious item which was accessible only among the riches, but not anymore. With the sharp fall in its price, notebook is with in the affordable reach of everyone now.

Even big notebook manufacturers like HP, Dell are quite confident that soon the sell of notebooks will outdo the sell of desktops. These days many notebook manufacturers designed lightweight notebooks also called ultraportables especially for students and business travellers. These notebooks usually weigh less than 3 pounds.

One of the common problems users always complain about notebook is its small screen. Several accessories like DVD burner or 17-inch LCD screen are available by which you can make your laptop screen look every bit as good as your desktop screen. Similarly some users might not be satisfied with the tiny speakers of notebook. You can go for Logitech speaker accessories to enhance the sound capacity.

Some users also do complain about aching fingers when typing long time on a laptop, they can go for wireless keyboard and mouse combo accessories. Imagine yourself in an airport lounge and running out of your laptop battery. Chances are there you might not be lucky enough to find a socket for charging your notebook. It shows the importance of going for a notebook which has long battery life.

These days many notebooks are there with multiple battery options like four cells, six cells or nine cells. Normally more the number of cells, the longer a battery will hold the charge.

All notebook manufactures provide warranty when you purchase notebook of their brand. You also have the option of choosing free at home service in case of any defect occurs with in that warranty period. However notebook is highly susceptible to accidental breakage and theft. So it is a good investment to insure your notebook.

If you think that your notebook does not need to be insured within its warranty period, think again. Because the warranty can at best take care of any defective hardware but theft, fire, power surges or accidental breakage are seldom covered under the warranty scheme. Many electronics retailers do offer extended warranties that act as a kind of insurance. In these extended warranties some retailers offer full replacement of your defect parts. Hence it is a good bargain.

These days you can also go for third party computer insurance agencies that will take care of your accidental claims. Safeware, a computer insurance company covers natural disasters like earthquake, flood and hurricanes under its accidental insurance coverage scheme.

Following are a few tips on how to take proper care of your notebook.

1. Use a clean, soft and lint-free cloth to wipe the dust from your laptop.

2. Always use an ammonia or alcohol free cleansing solution to clean the LCD screen of your notebook.

3. Keyboards are usually the most difficult part to dust off in laptop. Use cans of dust-of compressed air to clean your laptop keyboard.

4. You can use the scratch-removal kits available generally for iPods to remove the scratches on your laptop surface.

What To Do With An Old Computer System

Anyone who has purchased a computer system has learned how quickly they lose their value, and become obsolete. This rapid devaluation often leads to the dilemma: what to do with an older system, when you’re no longer going to use it? Selling it is most often a waste of time and effort. A computer bought for $3,000.00 on January 1, 2005 and then put up for sale on December 31, 2005 will rarely bring offers of more than $100.00 - $150.00, and even these don’t come often. Older systems are proportionately less valuable.

One quick, easy solution is to donate the computer system to a charity, and write-off what is appropriate. However, charities are quickly becoming more and more skeptical about accepting older computer systems, and less and less likely to surrender receipts (for use with a tax return) for very much money.

Sometimes it is a wise course of action to simply 'cannibalize' the older system for components that will work in other systems. Some components can be switched between older and newer computer systems. These can include power supplies, hard drives, RAM, graphics cards, speakers, keyboards, CD and DVD readers/writers and so forth. If you have a use/need for your old DVD burner in your newer system, you're almost always best off going the 'cannibal' route. But there are some other options, some of which can be quite attractive. Sometimes, the otherwise out-of-work computer system can be set to tending some necessary and/or useful affairs and matters.

Hand-in-hand with cannibalizing is stripping out components and selling them individually. This can be especially beneficial if you recently installed a hardware upgrade to the now defunct system such as a good DVD or CD reader/writer, or a new hard drive. Not only are the components often easier to sell, they will bring more money and ship much, much easier – and cheaper.

DEDICATED FAX SYSTEM
You can turn almost any old system into a dedicated fax receiver at either your home or office. It can be incredibly convenient to have a fax at the house! Anyone who has bought a house or car lately will attest to how nice a fax at the house would be. Remember, the system does not have to be set to always receive faxes. You can turn it on or off as you deem necessary based on your use and needs. All your system requires for this application is a phone line, a modem, and Windows®. The fax service in Windows® must be turned on and configured in order for this to work properly. This is very easily accomplished through the Control Panel of Windows.

HOME ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM
Recently, manufacturers of computer systems and components have entered the home entertainment business – with a vengeance. No longer are computers just good for games and music, now you can hook them up to control your TV, cable signals, speaker systems, VCR, DVD player, etc. You can even record to and play from them. The system would need some hardware and software, but not too much, and all of the necessities can be had at reasonable (and quickly dropping) prices. You can learn more about the rapidly growing home entertainment computer systems industry on any number of sites on the Internet. A good place to start is www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/default.mspx.

As you can see, you don't have to throw up your hands and scream when you're offered 5% of what you paid for your computer system a year earlier. There are some other options, some of which can be quite satisfying and rewarding.

Does Your Computer Need A Firewall

Almost every single home in America now has a personal computer, and almost every single one of these computers is hooked up to the Internet. The Internet is a valuable new way of communicating, gathering information, and purchasing, but it has also given rise to a whole new breed of criminals and miscreants who love to prey on the uninformed or the unsuspecting in order to make a profit or just to have what they think is a little bit of fun. It is vita that you protect your computer and your information from being accessed by these people, who are becoming ever more innovative when to comes to achieving their perfidious goals. A key instrument in the fight for your computer’s security is a firewall.

A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that functions in a networked environment to prevent communication between areas with different degrees of trust. The term comes from the same word as that applied to a construction that is used in construction to keep a fire from spreading if one should start.

The most common type of firewall is the personal firewall, and this type in fact will come with most Windows software from the XP version forward. Although the model was not at first used very much, the emergence of the Blaster worm and the Sasser worm forced Microsoft to begin developing a more comprehensive software application that offered users better protection for both their home and office networks.

The next generation of Microsoft Firewalls takes the security of the personal and business computer one step further, by offering advanced protection against the phone home capabilities of both viruses and software. These firewalls will allow you to detect any activity that goes out form your computer, so that you know who is receiving information about what you are doing and your transactions online.

The fact is, every personal computer needs a firewall, just as any business system does. But you probably do not have to worry about going out and buying one on its own- your operating system likely has included one for you. Your job will be to find out how to set your operating parameters, and tell your firewall what to allow and what to block on your computer. It is especially important that you seek help when attempting the manipulation of your firewalls functions whenever possible, as mishandling will render your firewall useless. Instead, do not adjust the levels until instructed to by a tech help from the developing company. If you keep the documentation of the procedure, you will be bale to prove that it was their lack of knowledge, and not your own, that led to any informational leaks which caused some kind of stress.

Are You Protecting Your Computer?

Do you know what to look for in anti-virus software?

You just bought yourself a new computer! Can't wait to get it out of the box. Maybe you have had a computer before and maybe this is your second or third computer. And, you don't want to have all those problems you hear about. This is the time to think ahead and go for a positive online experience.

You should realize that while you are unpacking your new machine, there are people all over the world who are plotting to spoil your computer with maliscious, well-thought out plans. Your computer will endure attacks moments after you go online. This is why we all have to use antivirus protection. You and I just have no choice. The single most important program on your computer is your anti virus program. And, it should be a really good one. Everything on your computer, from your valuable software, your work, to your personal financial records is contantly at risk. I will explain some of the features you should look for in anti-virus software.

Most of us make our choice on price alone. That is, after we use the product that comes with our computers. This is not the way to choose something so important. You need to look at several products before making your decision.

Look at your available options. Start with the anti virus software that came with your PC. You can get started by getting that software up and running. Don't try to postpone using anti-virus software. After a period of time, your software needs updated. While you are online, your software should be allowed to make daily updates. It is very important to make the first update as soon as your new computer is online for the first time. It is very likely there have been a lot of new threats and viruses introduced since the computer left the factory. Updating the software is the best way to keep your computer protected against these new online dangers.

As you use the software that came with your new computer, it is a good idea to make a list of what you like – and don’t like – about it. Is it easy to update? Is it user friendly? Is it easy to see any problems? Does the software notify you if the update could not be completed? Are updates made available on a daily basis?

Now, you have a basis for establishing what to look for in anti-virus software. Read all you can online to get even more information. Some anti virus companies make their software available in trial versions, so be sure to check out a number of different products before deciding which one best suits your needs. Some of the best is free, without a trial.

Take some time to get the best protection you can for your computer. And, periodically back up your files. Al little planning can make your computer experience an enjoyable experience.

Computer Rentals: The Best Classroom Computer Training Solution

For classroom training, renting computers, sound systems and projectors from a computer rental company is the easiest and most cost efficient way to coordinate corporate training initiatives with the least amount of headaches.

Save Time and Money with Training: Computer, Projector, and Sound System Equipment Rentals

Even if you own all the equipment you need for a computer training session you will save money by using the installation services of a computer rental company. Computer rental companies coordinate everything technical so you can concentrate on the execution of your computer training program.

Trainers can become technicians very quickly when training computer equipment doesn't work properly.

Training directors know how difficult it can be to 'work out all the bugs' before, during and after each training program.

Execution is the key to training results and efficiencies. If 20% of the computers don't work, you can have a training disaster on your hands.

Add up all the costs and distractions from your computer training goals. Put a value on your time, say $100 per hour. Now multiply the time you and your staff spent on hardware setup, delivery, installation, maintenance and removal. Keep in mind that all computers need to have the same configuration to maximize productivity.

Here is a quick checklist of common tasks that need to be accomplished on every computer training session.

1. Install same versions of operating systems and training software

2. Install sound system, projectors, printers

3. Run network cables

4. Tape down all wires

5. Connect to network services

6. Test each computer

7. Troubleshoot installation problems

8. Diagnose and fix all problems

9. Service equipment during training sessions including having spare equipment available.

10. At the end of the computer training, disconnect, pickup and return all the equipment to various locations in your company.

How many man-hours would it take for you and your company's staff to accomplish the classroom training setup, service and teardown?

Here are some things to find out if you use a computer rental company for computer training sessions:

Find out if the computer rental company has any experience with the classroom training hardware and software you need. If they do often they can remember all the pieces and parts that easily get overlooked by a non-experienced rental company.

Some rental companies will install software or 'image load' all rental computers prior to delivery.

For example, you can have your training program software and the OS of your choice installed on all desktop or laptop computers!

Have the computer rental technicians test each application by following your testing directions. This ensures that your training software will work as planned.

Make sure delivery, setup is planned well in advance of computer training sessions.

Make sure you are covered with an on-site service program! Ask for extra, spare equipment can even be included for your computer training class! Often you can get a spare unit for free!

Focus on your core competency...your computer training session. Don't be distracted by hardware and software problems. Let the experts focus on their core competency.. your computer training hardware installation and management!

Label Printing Tips

Please keep in mind, there are no set rules for achieving the best results, as each printer may perform just a little bit differently. So feel free to try whatever methods you think will be best when printing!

Storing label sheets for a short period before attempting to print, allows them to adjust to any temperature changes and stabilize after shipping, which may prevent common printing problems.

Inkjet Printers and Label Materials

- Please refer to your printer manual for printer specific paper loading and feeding recommendations.

- Store inkjet label sheets in the original plastic clamshell packaging in a cool, dry place to avoid humidity.

- Put a weight on the label sheets to keep them flat in and out of the box, but do not crush or bend the edges.

- Prevent label sheets from being exposed to direct sunlight or flood lights.

- Make sure your inkjet printer is on the “Plain Paper” and “Normal” settings with 300 or 600 DPI resolution.

- Reducing DPI may resolve smudging issues, while higher image quality settings can lead to over saturation of ink on the label material.

- Before you print onto a label sheet, first print onto a blank piece of paper. Place the printed sheet behind the label sheet, and then hold the sheets up to a light to make sure the positioning is correct.

- Before and after printing, handle label sheets by the edges of the sheet being careful not to get oil from your fingers on the printable label surface. Oil may cause smudging.

- Allow ink to dry completely before stacking, handling or peeling the printed labels.

- Sheets of inkjet labels can be passed through an inkjet printer only once; the tight paper path of an inkjet printer can cause the label to curl on multiple passes through the printer. This could cause the label to jam or peel off inside the printer, resulting in an expensive repair bill.

Laser Printers and Label Materials

- Refer to your printer manual for loading and feeding recommendations. Many printers have special instructions regarding the direction in which you should load sheets.

- Before you print onto a label sheet, first print onto a blank piece of paper. Place the printed sheet behind the label sheet, and then hold the sheets up to a light to make sure the positioning is correct.

- If you find your toner is flaking or easily rubbing off, please try selecting “Labels” or “Transparency” in your printer settings as the media type as opposed to paper. These settings are normally found in your print options on print dialog box when you push print or they are located in the display screen on your printer.

- Reducing your printer’s DPI resolution may give the label sheets a better quality finish.

- Sheets of laser labels can be passed through a laser printer only once because the heat of the printer causes the adhesive to soften. If a sheet of labels is passed through the printer a second time, the adhesive could ooze and adhere to the inner workings of the printer, causing the labels to jam or peel off.

Usage Tips and Laptop Battery Basics Usage Tips and Laptop Battery Basics

Laptop battery is very much essential for the usage of laptop, because without battery it is not possible to use it on the move, as it requires a power outlet. So as a main accessory for the usage of the laptop, the battery must be in a good condition and work properly. Some of the general tips for laptop care are to avoid extreme temperatures, and not to leave the laptop outside in cold weather or in high heat, as cold batteries cannot generate much power and hot batteries will discharge very soon. Charge the battery whenever it is necessary and when the electrical power is available. The battery charge is indicated in the taskbar of the laptop, which shows the current battery capacity and remaining time. When a laptop is used as a replacement of desktop the battery should not be left in for long time. Battery must be re installed every three to four weeks and allowed to fully discharge.

Smaller the battery better are its functionalities. For instance take into consideration an ultra portable or thin and light battery rather than a bigger one.

Power control settings must be adjusted accordingly as the laptop will go inactive after a specified time which is beneficial for the battery.

Adjust the screen brightness to lower setting according to the working conditions or the place of work which will save the power.

Battery consumption must be noticed often, so that the battery power will be in control. In this case the battery charge indicator must be on the task bar .

Charge the battery whenever necessary and when the power source is available. Especially you are on travel; charge the battery fully as electrical outlets may not be available at the destination.

Clean the batteries and their connections often. It must be done by using a cotton swab and alcohol. Don't keep the laptop idle for long period of time without using the battery. Using the laptop to play games or to watch movies or multimedia activities will drain the battery soon. Laptop speaker volume must be kept in mute or decreased to low level. Don't run any program directly from a CD or DVD, instead it can be copied to the hard drive and can be used, which will consume less power.

Before the first use, a new battery must be charged fully. Then the battery has to be charged twice or thrice for achieving maximum capacity. If the battery is not used for more than a month, it is better to be removed from the laptop and stored in a cool or dry or clean place. Again the stored battery has to be recharged before use till it reaches its maximum capacity. Laptop batteries last for longer period if they are stored in a cool place and maintained properly.

Tips While Choosing Offshore Software Development Company

Technology is a wide arena, like our outer space in the galaxy. IT outsourcing isn’t much different than any other kind of outsourcing. However, if there is danger that you will bite off more than you can chew, it’s about time to take into consideration. Anyone who has experience in outsourcing knows that there are advantages as well as disadvantages in Offshore software development. some tips to cut down risks.

It’s not only about saving the bucks:

The most obvious benefit that tends to strengthen the demand of custom software development to an extensive extent is the cost cutting factor. Selecting the least expensive Offshore Software Development Company often backfires and ends up costing the client much more than initially thought. Offshore vendors are all facing cost pressures from wage inflation. Choosing the least expensive vendor just means you have chosen a company with very little leeway in its profit margins. This will affect everything adversely: hiring the right people, retaining the people who are working on your projects and providing the right resources for people to do the work on your development effort. Successful vendors may be better bets even if they're bit more expensive, given the realities in outsourcing and offshoring.

Hear their Story: The Story of the provider speaks volumes about their professionalism, their business goals, their achievements, and their credibility. This will help you analyze how much you need to rely on them. How active and involved will they be and how much ownership they will take it helping you achieve your goals. If possible try hearing their story from other businesses who have worked with them. It will help you decide and understand how they practically function. Try to choose a provider you can have a long term relationship with. You will save time starting from scratch again.

Put Communication on high priority:

The basic reason is very simple: you know your business requirements best. Software services companies working in another part of the world can only develop a solution based on the input provided by you. But there will be loopholes unless the Communication is crystal clear. Fairly large projects demands for a dedicated project manager who is a single point of contact of the offshore team and acts as a virtual bridge between the business and the software developers. Agile methodologies are more realistic when it comes to making sure communication is facilitated properly and often with real code sent back for verification, reflection and fine-tuning.

Adhere to high standards:

Lookout for standards the provider adheres to, You need to understand that successful custom software development depends upon standards the provider follows in the process, documentation, coding in short the entire development cycle For example, The most dependable companies use the highest industry standards in testing each aspect of the products they create so that you receive a product that is ready to implement.

Check out their past experience:

The work done in past speaks a lot about the experience and expertise the provider has. It also talks about the domain they have been exposed to and the learnings they have picked up along the way which may help your goal. In theory, offshore software development companies should be able to perform custom software development for any type of business. There will be less of a learning curve, though, and greater chances for success, if the company has knowledge of your industry or a related industry.

Technology Expertise:

The most agile software development companies have an extensive network of specialists but they may be not adequate in terms of the technology expertise your project demands. So you will need to compare not only the domain expertise but also the technology expertise of a provider. Essentially, the provider needs to be competent and flexible, and see their role as an information technology partner who solves your software problems, supports your team, and manages your projects from beginning to end.

Study the Methodology the provider adapts:

We should remember that software development methodologies are all milestones in the continuing evolution of software engineering. This evolution is still continuing and there will be more variants in the future. And, depending upon the nature of the software development project, the choice needs to be different. A compatible Process Methodology accelerates the delivery of high quality custom software. An Agile Process Methodology follows a controlled, iterative development and prototyping process.

Few Tips for Finding a Great Deal on Toner

Whether you have photo printers, laser printers, or inkjet printers, you know that toner cartridges are incredibly expensive. If you're in the market for an inkjet printer cartridge or a LaserJet toner cartridge, there are great deals to be had online. However, there are several things you should know before buying toner online.

Understand Your Options

When it comes to laser toner cartridges or inkjet printer cartridges, you have three options: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) cartridges, compatible cartridges, and re-manufactured cartridges. What are the differences? Original Equipment Manufacturer cartridges are those that you find at office supply stores. They are packaged and sold with the printer manufacturer's name on them. Compatible cartridges don't have the branding from the printer manufacturers, but they meet or exceed the manufacturers' specifications for the ink or toner. Re-manufactured cartridges are, essentially, Original Equipment Manufacturer cartridges that have been used, refilled, and cleaned and quality checked.

Although the initial reaction of most people is to buy Original Equipment Manufacturer cartridges, you can save a tremendous amount of money - without sacrificing quality - when you buy compatible cartridges or re-manufactured cartridges.

Know What You Need

As with most types of devices these days, different models of printers have relatively unique cartridge designs. Unfortunately, the lack of standardization means that you have to know the make and model of your printer when you want to buy toner cartridges or ink cartridges. When ordering toner or ink cartridges online, it's important to have this information handy. You don't want to go through the hassle of ordering the wrong cartridge and having to return it for a replacement.

Order From a Reputable Source

With so many ecommerce sites on the Internet, it's sometimes difficult to ascertain which sources for toner and ink cartridges offer exceptional products and service. If you're planning to buy a compatible or re-manufactured inkjet printer cartridge or LaserJet toner cartridge, it's crucial that the company produces or sells high-quality products. An inferior product could, at best, produce poor quality prints, and at worst, damage your printer.

One of the best ways to select a source for toner and ink cartridges is to look for a company that has a high BizRate ranking. A company that gives their customers the opportunity to rate satisfaction through providing feedback to BizRate is clearly committed to customer service. If that same company is BizRate customer certified and receives BizRate's platinum award for customer service, so much the better. Another indicator that a company is reputable is participation in the BBBOnline Reliability Program.

When you understand the differences between the types of toner and inkjet cartridges available, know what you need, and find a reputable company, you'll be all set to save money by ordering toner online

IT - Consider Buying a Laptop Tips

Many lap top computers are far more powerful than even high end desk top computers were just a few years ago. So let's take a look at some tips you'll want to be aware of when you go to buy a lap top computer.

As the capacities, power, size and lower cost of laptops continues to improve, laptop computers continue to represent increasing value for the dollar. But there are some important things to be aware of when considering a laptop. This article will focus on some of the primary issues.

The first decision to consider when purchasing a laptop is whether you need or want a Windows, Apple or Linux operating system.

Because the windows operating system has become so pervasive the majority will stick by with a Windows operating system. Windows XP Pro should be minimum and their new VISTA operating system if you can afford it. Keep in mind, if you are going to be dependent on friends and family to help you in getting used to using your new laptop computer, most of them will not have knowledge of the VISTA Operating system until even as late as 2010. Those who have used Apple in the past, and are more familiar with Apple will have far more limited options, but are probably best off sticking with Apple.

Linux users will need to analyze compatibility issues on Linux forums online.

Again, if you are new to computing, and know you will be dependent on friends, family or even business associates for assistance as you get up to speed on using your computer, they are far more likely to be able to help you if you have a Windows Operating System on your laptop than a Mac or Linux operating system. Not that one operating system is necessarily any better than the other, but windows is known best by most computer users.

Assuming you know what operating system you are looking for, the next step is to set a budget, and determine whether you want a new or used machine. Used laptops represent a good value for machines in the $600 - $700 range and below. However they come with zero warranty. There are some excellent deals that can be found on "Refurbished" laptop computers, but you need to buy them locally, find out what the warranty and support conditions are and whether or not you can pay a little extra to increase the warranty and support period.

If you don't think you need all the bells and whistles of a brand new system, buying a used system through a seller at EBay or from a laptop refurbishing company can make a lot of sense economically. When scouring EBay, look for the "Power Sellers" who sell many used laptops, and make sure their customer satisfaction and return policies are solid. Don't be tempted to buy systems without enough processing power just because they're cheap. Now days, anything below a Pentium 3 processor is best avoided, as Pentium 3 machines can already be found relatively inexpensively used or refurbished.

Once you have set your budget, determine the minimum memory capacity for your needs. Here I am referring to RAM or Random Access Memory. I'd highly recommend setting 512 MegaBytes as your minimum memory capacity. If you are intending to do high end graphic presentations or video presentations 1024 MegaBytes should be your minimum. Stripping memory out of a computer is a common way to sell them at lower prices. But memory is often the weak link in personal computer systems, bringing the performance of the machine down significantly. Lots of memory is the great equalizer in computers, and many people fail to realize that a lower end laptop with lots of memory will often outperform a higher end one without the memory.

Once you have you memory needs and budget set, you can start to compare models for weight, ergonomics, and most importantly, screen size. Finding a size and weight that is acceptable to you is important, but finding the correct screen size should be your primary consideration.

Many people are excited by the larger screened laptops, but fail to fully appreciate the impact of resolutions. Most laptops come with a set with an ideal resolution, and switching to a higher or lower resolution can distort text. Some laptops with large 17 inch screens are set at very high screen resolution, making them difficult to read for long periods of time without some eye strain. Some of the inexpensive laptops with 15 inch screens can also be difficult to read and with on than laptops with larger screens. 1024x768 should be an acceptable screen resolution for most laptop monitors. Avoiding larger screens that require higher resolutions above 1024X768 can save a lot of money, and deliver a machine that is just as easy to work on and read from.

Finally, there are networking considerations. By now, it does not make a lot of sense to purchase any laptop without WiFi wireless networking capabilities. Most new laptops will come with this standard, but with older and used laptops it is an item you need to verify. With the constant increase in wireless accessibility, a laptop without this capability will become obsolete within a few years.

If you're going to use your new Laptop for your home based business I would recommend the book Information Technology for Small and Home-Based Business

Top 10 Photo Recovery Tips

1. The Golden Rule Back Up Your Digital Photos Frequently

Perhaps you have a capacious memory card. Maybe you simply trust the technology of your latest digital gizmo to forever shield your data from harm. But accidents can happen any time on any device. So back up all critical files!

You can burn your pictures onto a DVD, upload them to a hard drive, or upload them to an online storage service. In some cases, you can even upload your key pictures and files to other digital devices. Make a habit of uploading photos every time you return from an important trip or event (a wedding, vacation, graduation). Archive and label your favorite photos, and make hard copies of the pictures you enjoy the most.

2. After Data Loss, Immediate Stop Using Your Digital Camera

Digital media devices typically have back up components to prevent complete data loss. But once a camera or device has proven defective, you should cease using it and get it checked out. If you continue to take photos, the device can actually overwrite your old photos, causing you to lose even more data and confounding your situation further.

3. Do Not Attempt to Format or Initialize Your Media

Some cameras or digital media devices will ask you to reformat your memory card in the wake of an accident or a data loss event. Avoid this! If you reformat, you may actually write over some of the data that may be recoverable. Furthermore, reformatting may not solve the problem that led to the data snafu in the first place.

4. Do Not Try to Open Your Device

While it is tempting to go into “fix-it” mode and aggressively scan components for damage, opening a sealed digital device can damage it and erase data stored on any memory cards that are inserted. There is absolutely no reason to crack open your device, especially with a memory card in the slot, since there are zero moving parts inside. In addition, the inner circuits of your device are very sensitive.

5. Do Not Expose Your Digital Media to Extreme Temperatures

Most cameras can work proper across a relatively wide temperature range. The typical digital media device can function from 0 to 60 degrees Celsius and store information securely from negative 20 degrees to 85 degrees Celsius. However, it is surprisingly easy to exceed these limits and damage your data. If, for instance, you leave your camera in direct sunlight on a hot day on a car dashboard, you may actually fry key electrical components.

Conversely, if you leave your camera in a glove compartment during a brutal winter cold snap, you can also lose data. As general rule, don’t test the limits of your device’s temperament.

6. Keep Your Media Card Away from Strong Magnetic Fields

Strong fields can erase, scramble, or otherwise skew the formatting of the data you keep on your media card. Just as you don’t expose the magnetic stripes on the back of your credit cards to magnetic fields, don’t expose your digital media device to a strong magnetic or radioactive field.

7. Store Your Digital Media and Your Camera in a Padded Case

It is all too easy to drop and damage a camera. Even if you are religious about wearing your protective straps and replacing your lens cap after use, you can never be too careful in your quest to prevent shock damage.

8. Use Photo Recovery Software Services to Get Your Files Back

Even if you have lost significant data, all hope is not necessarily lost. Top-rated software (or recovery services) may be able to retrieve seemingly unrecoverable data files. You may want to have a professional do this work for you, but be apprised that professional data recovery can run you a pretty penny. If you can attempt a software recovery on your own, your pocketbook will thank you.

9. After Your Files Have Been Recovered, “Wipe” the Media Card

Don’t allow old, fragmented data to gum up your media card. Get a fresh start, and keep your card clean by uploading pictures after any serious photo taking sessions (see rule number 1).

10. Be Cautious!

Learn about your camera’s functions and how data gets stored on your memory card. Your manual should provide detailed sections discussing formatting and initialization issues as well as how to properly delete single frames (without deleting all the other data on your card).

Did You Lose the Data a Moment Ago?

Ideally, you can never face the data loss scenario, when the systems have been designed devoid of certain problems, backup programs work and lots of data prevention tools are there in the market. But unfortunately, the data doesn't run on ideal systems, sometimes may be due to user mistakes or the malfunctions of the techniques used, and for this situation data recovery is the help.

The momentary loss of the data can open your eyes to the fact- how fragile the data is. A sudden disastrous event of data loss can make you realize that perhaps if you had taken the proper measures, then you would not be standing under this dark shadow. The data on the magnetic platters of hard drive can become inaccessible due to scrambling of viruses, human errors including accidental deletion, power surges, flood or fire damage and similar others.

If the recreation of the data is not possible, then data recovery solutions are here to salvage the data. These remedies offer their treatment in two ways: data recovery software and data recovery services, valuable in their respective data loss cases.

You can't throw the entire job of data recovery to these cures, but instead the work starts from the moment-one, the users face the data loss. Turning off the system after the data loss incident, not relying on the unreliable utilities, not attempting the practices whose results are unknown and not trying to write any data on the affected media, are few of the points to be considered in this regards. In case of physical crash, instead of calling data recovery services, don't ever try to apply the data recovery utilities unless to harsh the condition even more. Whereas in the logical data loss issue, install the data recovery software other than the affected one, which is healthy, and then attach the affected one to it.

The data recovery software are operable from the user itself and no further guidance is required due to the ease they provide through the interface. On the contrary, the data recovery service, which is applicable in physical damage cases, is workable through only data recovery experts and should not be attempted by the user in any case.

There are data recovery companies which avail products to recover data but not all. Only the reputed and the masters of the data recovery companies would do the best deal, in each situation. The solutions must be apt enough to address each specific scenario of data loss.

Stellar Information Systems Limited is the well-known provider of the superb data recovery solutions. The data recovery software for the different operating systems are fair enough to scan the affected media thoroughly and recover the data in the intact state. The built technology of the developed algorithms has created a history in recovering the data in all logical instances of data loss.

Data recovery service, which is provided in Class 100 Clean Rooms, is the industry's most demanding one. The data recovery experts have the geek capability to recover the data in all the cases and from all storage media. They apply the most appropriate techniques and tools to develop the chances of maximum data recovery.

The Ins And Outs Of Data Recovery

Have you ever thought of how difficult it would be if you lose your files on your home computer? Most of us fear the instance when our home computers crash and we lose very important files in our hard disk drive. The same fear is shared by those who use Palm Pilots, personal digital assistants or PDAs and similar devices. We fear that once we lose information, we would not longer be able to retrieve them.

The good news is, we can now retrieve information from crashed hard disk drives or damaged electronic devices through the process of data recovery. This would be the process in which information or data that has been corrupted or deleted or has been lost from the storage location are efficiently recovered and restored. This process is indeed a lifesaver for every computer user.

Lost data can be a result of accidentally hitting the delete key, or experiencing a power failure or some other technical glitches like damage to the hard drive.

We dread certain causes of lost data, especially those that are out of our hands. For instance, when a power failure happens and we were not able to save our documents or files, then there is a good probability that our work will not be recovered. In the same way when our internet connection gets hit by lightning during an electrical storm, it can wipe out the hard disk and cause us to lose important documents and files.

A damaged hard disk drive could potentially mean losing all your valuable data. But through the innovations in technology, we now have a lot of available ways in recovering data. Keep in mind however that the data recovery process should be done properly, lest you risk further damage to the hard disc or even overwriting files you are trying to recover.

We should always back up any information that is critical to us, whether it is a personal or business data. Although there are programs, files, as well as operating systems that enable you to recover lost data.

The kind of data recovery applied in the retrieval of lost information hinges on the operating system that is being used. While most data can be recovered at some point with recovery programs, we should first consult an expert before trying to recover any lost data.

The problem with most data recovery programs is that we run the risk of losing deleted files without the help of a professional. The process is that complicated and tedious that professional help is very much important.

I have to admit at this point that there are few data recovery programs today in the market that perform the job in a simplified manner. The downside is that these programs are pretty expensive and are out of reach of small time computer users. The benefit is that you don't have to keep paying a professional once you buy one of these softwares.

Lastly, make an informed decision before you take any step as the safety of your data depends heavily on it.

Data Cable Hanger Options

It used to be that contractors would hang their phone lines and cable off anything including ceiling grid pipe, sprinklers, anything they could get a zip tie on. Fortunately, codes eventually put an end to that practice and most contractors are using some form of data cable hanger.

Bridle Rings.

One of the first data cable hangers were bridle rings. These are simply ¼" rod bent in an open circle. They come in various sizes up to 4" and have either a ¼"-20 thread for mounting or a screw type end that can be screwed up into wood.

As cable has evolved and become more sensitive, these rings are being used less as the bearing area is two narrow for newer cabling applications. Mineralac has a bridle ring with a built in saddle that makes it acceptable for most newer types of cables.

J Hooks

One of the most popular forms of data cable hangers is the steel j hook. J hooks are just that, a j shaped hook that you can lay your cable in. J hooks come in sizes ranging from ¾" to 4". J hooks are a very versatile data cable hangers as they are available plain or with hammer on clamps, wings to mount to grid wire and rod, angle clips to mount to threaded rod and many other configurations. Some of these data cable hangers have retainers to keep the cable in check.

Generic metal j hook data cable hangers are now available that can offer some unique styles and will definitely save you money over brand names.

Plastic Data Cable Hangers

One data cable hanger that is gaining popularity very fast is the new strap type hangers. Arlington Industries makes a product called the Loop that is a plenum rated loop that has a closure keeping the cable in check. These hangers have a built in mounting block that makes them easy to mount to the wall, ceiling, threaded rod or to a mounting bracket.

As with the metal j hooks, the Arlington Loop is available with a variety of configurations saving time on the job. One of the biggest advantage of this type of hanger is cost, usually running about half the cost of bridle rings and metal j hook data cable hangers.

How to hang your data cable hangers.

The wide variety of data cable hangers gives you many options for hanging the hangers themselves. When suspending cable runs from a ceiling, many contractors will use either a grid wire or threaed rod. Depending on the ceiling, they may shoot up a wire or a threaded rod hanger or drill in a conrete anchor. If it is a wood or metal deck, they may use a sammy screw (a type of rod hanger) or a ceiling eye lag.

Many applications call for mounting to steel bar joists or beams. As mentioned above, many data cable hangers are available mounted to a hammer on clamp that makes quick work of this type of install. Look for a hanger that can rotate any direction for this application.

If you mount to a wall, it is usually pretty easy, just screw them up. If it is a concrete wall, you may be able to shoot them right to the wall with a Ramset or Hilti gun. If not tapcon will do a nice job.

In conclusion...

Today there is a wide variety of data cable hangers available. All of them offer their own advantages. Most data cable distributors get in a real rut, just being interested in selling you cable and don't take the time to show you all the new hangers. Take a little time on the net and you will be pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of data cable hangers available to you.

Be Prepared For Data Disaster

In every organization, as in life, there are two convictions: one is taxes and the other is the complete guarantee that, earlier or later, a serious software or hardware problem with your computer system will occur, leaving your organization to muddle through on the manual systems.

When you run a small organization, you do not have a full-time and highly facilitated IT department to assist you in recovering your data quickly nor can manage to pay for cobble together a backup program and anticipate it to work when the chips are down. That’s why; small business owner must think about how you will deal with the disaster.

There are four guidelines given below which you need to think about, while all of your computers are working perfectly and you stress level is low:

Know importance of your data

You must consider the value of your data and effects if the data loss occurs. Can you run your business smoothly without these data? If you have high-volume mail order business, you will wnt to make sure that the details of each sale are stored locally on the hard drive and backed up offsite, in real time.

Perform regular data backup

You must regularly backup your precious data to prevent any kind of data loss, which could happen to you at any point of time. The backup is the exact copy of your data which is saved to any other storage device. In case of data loss, you can restore from the backup and could keep the pace of your business.

Consider the type of data loss

If you haven’t made the proper backup and the data loss has happened, the most important thing, about which you should think, is the data recovery solutions. Before selecting a data recovery solution, you must first consider what type of data loss you have, either it is logical or physical. If the hard drive is physically damaged, then it is the physical data loss otherwise the data loss is logical.

Find a data recovery software or data recovery service

After considering the type of data loss, it is time to select the appropriate solution to perform data recovery. If you are having logical data loss, using the data recovery software will do the job and in else case, you need to take assistance from the hard drive recovery experts.

Finding the correct data recovery software or data recovery service provider is really important as well as challenging. You should go for a trusted data recovery company and should see the track record of the company before taking any decision. The data recovery and data recovery service provided by any data Recovery Company should be powerful, effective and easy to use.

Stellar Information Systems Ltd is the most trustworthy data recovery company having a golden track record in providing powerful and effective data recovery software and data recovery service solutions. Stellar has the cure of all the data loss situations with its successful hard drive recovery solutions.

Back up your computer data

Have you backed up the data on your computer recently? Many people will answer no to this question. They don't think they need to, they think they haven't got time or they simply haven't thought about the personal or professional consequences of losing all their documents photos and emails.

Don't stick your head in the sand and think that data loss won't happen to you. It can happen to anyone at anytime. I know, it has happened to many of my clients. Some have been in tears. I have helped some reconstruct hours of work from paper records. And some have been able to breathe easily in the knowledge that all their precious data is safely stored away from the computer and can be reinstated. These people weren't "the lucky" ones, they were the ones who realised that a few minutes work spent making sure their data was safe could potentially save them hours of work and heartache.

Too many people simply can't be bothered to back up the data on their computer. They think that data loss only happens to other people. It doesn't. My clients are real people and many of them have lost some or all of their computer files in a myriad of ways.

* Their computer has been stolen. This even happened to one of my clients while the computer was at the repair shop. The shop was burgled. If this happened to you, would you at least know that your data was safe?

* Your computer's hard drive could fail. This happened to my previous laptop. I always keep a copy of important data on my pc as well.

* A power surge could destroy your computer's motherboard. This happened to an organisation I was working for on an occasional basis last year. Fortunately for all I kept regular backups of every single document, email, photo and invoice. They had the hassle of buying a new computer, reinstalling the software and broadband, but at least their data was safe. I breathed a sigh of relief and resolved to remain diligant about backing up.

* When the floods hit in the summer of 2007 several of my clients were flooded out of offices and homes. If this happened to you and your computer was lost, would you know that your data was safely backed up, away from the danger of flooding?

What do I mean by backup? I mean having at least one copy (and preferably two or more) of all your documents, emails and photos stored in a location other than a hard drive inside your computer. This can be an external hard drive, another computer, a CD/DVD a memory stick, an online backup or a simple printout.

If you are running a business it is sensible to have a backup copy that is stored away from your office. Take a CD/DVD/memory stick home with you, or use an online backup service.

Data Loss in Mac Due To Misuse of Sudo Command

In Mac and other Unix-like operating systems, 'Sudo' is a command which allows users to run applications with the security permission of another user (generally super user). Sudo is capable of logging each command run and in several cases has completely succeeded super user login for the administrative functions.

It is generally used for temporarily obtaining the super user status and change the permissions on files that otherwise can not be altered. On the other hand, it is only available if you have logged in with the administrator account.

You can use rm -rf command with sudo to free up the disk space. It is generally used for deleting the unwanted or unimportant stuff from the Mac hard drive, so that it can be used for storing important data.

But, typographical error or mishandling or the "rm -rf" Mac command can result into the catastrophic situations of data loss. Insertion of the space in the wrong place can result in the complete removal of data from your Mac hard drive.
br>For example, if you wish to execute this command with different options like:

sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/

sudo rm -rf /.Thrashes/

sudo rm- rf /Volumes//.Trashes/

Correspondingly, using these commands will permanently delete all the files stored in the current user's trash bin.

This is the most catastrophic situation which a Mac user could face and can fall in need of Mac data recovery. The data loss can also put your business at stake of loss and the Mac recovery becomes the need of hour.

Mac data recovery is feasible through the application of Mac data recovery software. Mac recovery software are the tremendous data recovery Mac programs, specially designed to carry out Do It Yourself Mac data recovery.

Pulling Data from Multiple Tables into a Single Query in MS Access

Sometimes an Access database user needs to pull pieces of information from multiple table sources to display on a single form. For many users, this can seem like a daunting task. However, with a few tips and a little practice, you can learn to link database tables with little headache. The easiest way to accomplish this is to make use of the “Primary Key” option provided in MS Access. The Primary Key is a unique identifier that classifies the data in a table. By representing data in different tables with the same Primary Key, linking tables is relatively easy. The first step is to create a new query. Once the query has been created and named, open the query in “Design View” to view the inner workings of the query. Since this is a new query, there should not be any tables listed in the viewer. Select the “add table or query” option to select the tables you would like to link.

If the Primary Key for the tables selected is the same for each table, then linking the tables is easy. Simply select the field set as the primary key and drag it to the corresponding table’s primary key. The tables are now linked by the uniquely identifying Primary Key. Information from either table can now be displayed in the query when it is run.

If the Primary Key differs between the selected tables, then a little more work is required to link the tables. Let us consider an example to better illustrate this process. Assume you have two tables. One table contains an automatically numbered Primary Key. The table contains one other field besides the Primary Key. This field contains descriptions of options a user can select (e.g. “yes”, “no”, “other”, etc.) stored as strings. This type of table is known as a “list” table or a “static” table because the data does not change. The other table contains account information for customers at a small business. One of the fields displays whether or not the customer has paid their outstanding bill. In the newly created query, the user must link the two fields. The linking between the two tables can be accomplished using the “Criteria” option in the viewer. Below is an example of how to link the data in the dynamic and static tables:

Dynamic Table: “[Static Table Name].[Static Table Field Name]”

The two tables have now been linked! Use this as a template for linking your own tables within a query. With a little practice, you will be able to create more complex queries, helping you become more efficient and organized within your database.

The Must Have Information about Hard Drive Data Recovery

The data recovery could be the point where you like to throw out your entire system and start with a new one. But with the loss of data and information, you might as well destruct your entire business, right?

There are a number of factors which could totally interrupt the entire operation such as logical crashes to the hard drive. So, how will you recover your lost data in case of logical hard drive crash?

The logical data loss might be the result of accidental deletion, mistaken formatting of the hard dive, file system corruption, operating system corruption, virus hit and many alike. In case of logical hard drive crash, the hardware remains intact, only the data could not be recovered.

Logical data loss is completely and easily curable with the hard drive data recovery software. These are the third party applications which are specially designed to salvage data from the affected hard drive in all possible cases of data loss.

There is a bunch of data recovery software available in the market developed by different data recovery companies. These data recovery software are different from each other with respect to operating system and file system support, features they provide, powerfulness, and their price.

It is significant to select the dominant data recovery software from the trusted company. Though there are thousands companies providing data recovery software but finding the right one is really difficult and challenging.

The good data recovery software provider companies provide demo versions of their data recovery software which could be used to check out the features and functions of the products prior to purchasing them.

The hard drive recovery software provided by the Stellar Information Systems Ltd are amazing and could handle all of the data loss circumstances like accidental formatting, virus problems, software malfunction and so forth.

Whether you are using Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, Linux or Novell operating systems, Stellar’s data recovery software are powerful enough to recover data from all of them in an efficient fashion.

All these data recovery software are extremely influential and perform a systematic scan of the entire hard drive and extract all of the data from it. Due to the read only and non destructive demeanor, these hard disk recovery software don’t perform any write operation to the hard drive.

Being the leading data recovery solution provider company, Stellar offers demo versions of all these data recovery software without any cost. You can download free demo versions from company’s website. If you get satisfied with the results of demo versions, you could go for full version.

10 Vital Questions You Should Ask Any Data Recovery Company You Talk To

10 questions you should ask when talking to data recovery companies. When you have the answers to these questions you will be armed with the information you need to make an informed decision about choosing the right data recovery solution for your needs.

Do you have a cleanroom?

You don't want to choose a data recovery company that does not have a cleanroom because the smallest dust particles, and even finger prints can make your data unrecoverable. If the answer is yes, make sure you ask for a certificate of inspection. a typical hard drive recovery cleanroom will be a class 100 cleanroom. You owe it to yourself to get proof.

Do you replace parts?

If your drive has failed mechanically: if your hard drive is clicking, not spinning, making unusual sounds it is going to require parts. Find out if the data recovery company replaces parts and what type of parts do they replace.

How much do parts cost you?

When you take your car in for repair, the mechanic gives you a price for parts. A trustworthy data recovery company should be willing to give you an average cost for parts. You should be leary of companies that give you a run around or refuse to tell you how much parts cost them.

What is your success rate at recovering ALL hard drives you look at?

Don't let website statements like "we have a 95% success rate" or "we recover 97% of all hard drives" cloud your thinking. The fact is: even the best data recovery companies can only recover data from 65 to 70% of all hard drives they look at.

How can you afford to perform a free evaluation?

Many data recovery companies offer a no data, no charge guarantee. Others charge an evaluation or attempt fee. The answer to the previous question revealed their cost for parts so, if they replace parts; how can they afford to do a free evaluation? If you dig deep enough you will usually find that "your situation doesn't fit this criteria" or "your hard drive requires more extensive work than we thought". Remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Based on my symptoms, how much do you think mine will cost?

In most cases you will receive a broad range price quote for recovering your data. It is in your best interest to narrow that range down. You deserve to know whether your situation will come in on the low side or the high side. You wouldn't accept a DR. telling you that surgery on your heart will be between $25,000 and $75,000, but I'll tell you for sure AFTER I complete the surgery. You'd run for the door looking for a DR. that will tell you the truth.

Where will my data be recovered?

A lot of companies lead you to believe that they have data recovery labs all over the country and that they recover data at each of these locations. You need to find out if they perform the entire data recovery process at the location they are asking you to send your hard drive to or drop it off at. You will find that most are drop and ship only locations and that they do not perform data recovery at these locations - they are taking advantage of your desire to have "local service". Be sure to ask: Do you recover all hard drives at this location?

Are you authorized by hard drive manufacturers to maintain my warranty?

Hard drive manufacturers refurbish failed hard drives. Tolerances and contamination are big issues. If your hard drive is not handled by an authorized data recovery company, your warranty will be null and void. If a data recovery company tells you yes, then you need to ask for a letter of authorization from the manufacturer stating that XYZ data recovery company is authorized to open their hard drives without voiding the warranty. Be cautious of internet claims that a company is authorized by ALL hard drive manufacturers. You should get verifiable proof to protect yourself.

Will you give me the names and telephone numbers for 3 references I can call?

Nearly all data recovery companies list well-known companies they have recovered data for like ebay, Amazon, US Military, Boeing, AT&T and tons more. Ask if they recover data for these companies on a regular basis. Are these companies referral partners. If they are referral partners or send jobs regularly, ask for 3 to 5 references, including title, position and telephone numbers that you can call. Then call them! You will discover that the majority are either one-time jobs or for someone that works fo the company and not really a decision maker.

Every company says they are the leader - What makes you the leader?

Since almost every data recovery company says they are the industry leader, wouldn't it be prudent to find out what makes them the leader - come on, every company can not be the industry leader. What makes them the leader? What do they do different? How can they make this claim? Take this into serious consideration when you come across these claims. Ask: What makes you better than XZY?

Take the guesswork out of choosing the right data recovery solution for you: Data Recovery Resource Network {http://www.datarecoveryresourcenetwork.com} helps you correctly identify your problem and recommends solutions to help you make the best decision for your needs.

Converting EPM Data Between Systems

Back in '98, as the year 2000 and the 'Y2K' crisis loomed on the horizon, our practice management company, Fiscal, informed us that they would discontinue support of their software for medical practices. That left us in the expensive and daunting situation of needing another EPM system. This led us to decide on Medical Manager's system, a robust product among the options at that time. When we made the choice to move to EMR, for obvious reasons Medical Manager was on the short list.

Ultimately, we decided on NextGen for our EMR system. After careful selection, we chose to go with their integrated EPM / EMR solution - even through this meant we'd have to abandon our Medical Manager EPM system. This year we've made the switch to NextGen's EPM before using the EMR module. As a result, we had to decide if we were going to convert data from Medical Manager to the new system - or not.

If a medical practice makes the choice to switch to a new system with its own EPM module, there are some issues to consider before migrating the data over. This is especially true of insurance and demographics information.

1) Over time, the information in an EPM data base can degrade, primarily due to input errors. For example, some of our users created duplicate records for patients depending on their type of insurance, be it a private carrier or workman's compensation. Although they thought this would be a time-saver, this information was extremely difficult to reconcile.

2) Data field mapping. Even if the information is correct, it could be some tedious work to be insured the outdated info ends up in the right place within the new data base. A patient's name should not be displayed in the address field, or vice versa.

3) Cost of conversion. The majority of software vendors charge a flat rate for converting data from an older system to a newer one.

As we felt NextGen would be the platform of choice in the long term, we decided to input the data to the new system manually. The NextGen system had added data fields what Medical Manager did not, and these needed to be filled with good info. Time saved by converting some information fields would have been minimal as compared to the amount of new info which needed to be input. Still, it was time well spent -we successfully rotated all our staff members through the training room in order to learn the new EPM system; meanwhile, they called up the patients to verify insurance and demographic information, confirming appointments in the new system.

Computer Noise

Computer noise is normal... somewhat. Then there is the dreaded silence of death...

You see, there are several moving parts inside of your desktop computer. These parts are going to make noise, so that part is normal. Your computer has at least two fans, one on the CPU (central processing unit, or the brain of the computer) and the other on the power supply unit. An option third fan is sometimes located in the middle of the back of the case, directing airflow directly onto the CPU area, or venting the case itself. All of these fans will make noise.

In addition, your hard drive is comprised of small platters with magnetic read/write heads located in between the platters; a sort of sandwich if you will. Under normal operation, the hard drive is relatively silent, but as it gets older and it's mechanisms get more worn, it will generate some sound when accessing the drive. This is a good indication that you need to start shopping for another hard drive... and don't forget to regularly back-up the contents of the drive while you're at it!

Two more things that generate noise on your computer are your CD-ROM (and DVD-ROM) drives and your floppy drive (if you still have one!). These devices spin your media at phenomenal rotation rates, and generate heat as well as noise. However, these devices have a noise that you should become fairly familiar with. Any noise that appears abnormal from these devices probably indicates a problem with the device. For example, a grinding noise in the floppy drive may indicate a bad floppy disk, or a bad drive. CD-ROM is the same way ... a drive that has to be repeatedly opened and closed before it will access a CD could indicate a problem with the CD or the drive. In both cases, a careful examination of the media will help eliminate the media and point to the drive itself as the source of the problem. A good question to ask when encountering this type of issue is if the disk will work in another computer. If so, the problem is most likely your drive.

However, none of the things discussed so far describe the two most ominous sounds that can come from your computer: the whining grind of bearings going out, and complete silence. For the first issue, when the bearings in any of your fans start to go out, it starts to whine and grind. It will sound exactly like any other fan bearings that you might have heard go out... from an air conditioner unit to a box fan... the fan bearings all sound the same when they start to fail. At first this noise will be intermitten... but after a while it will become severe and nonstop. At this point it is imperative that you purchase a fan to replace the one that is going out. Why? Because what comes next can be very destructive...

Complete silence. No fan sounds. No grinding. Worst case scenario: it's the CPU fan gone bad, and every second you use your computer you are burning up the CPU chip. Most computers today are designed to turn themselves off once the temperature on the CPU reaches a certain level... before damage takes place. However, this safety feature doesn't always prevent damage from occurring. After you get the fan fixed, you can experience random shut-downs and system errors that are directly related to a previous overheating incident. So, it is best not to run your computer at all during times when overheating may be an issue.

So the bottom line? Get to know your computer! Some noise is normal... but excessive noise from any component on the computer usually indicates excessive wear and tear, not to mention possible emminent failure. So be alert and aware of what your computer sounds like now,... before it has any problems.

Computer Security - What Exactly Is It?

Although the term 'computer security' is used a lot, the content of a computer is actually vulnerable to only a few risks unless the computer is connected to others on a network. As the use of computer networks (especially the Internet) has increased dramatically during the past few years, the term computer security is now used to describe issues referring to the networked use of computers and their resources.

The major technical areas of computer security are confidentiality, integrity and authentication/availability.

- Confidentiality, also known as secrecy or privacy, means that the information you own cannot be accessed by unauthorized parties. Breaches of confidentiality range from the embarrassing to the disastrous.

- Integrity means that your information is protected against unauthorized changes that are undetectable to authorized users. The integrity of databases and other resources are usually compromised through hacking.

- Authentication means that an user is who he claims to be.

- Availability means that the resources are accessible by authorized parties. Examples of availability attacks are the 'denial of service' attacks.

Other important things that the computer security professionals are concerned about are access control and nonrepudiation. Access control refer not only to the fact that users can only access the resources and services they are entitled to, but also to the fact that they can't be denied to access the resources they legitimately expect. Nonrepudiation means that a person who sends a message cannot deny he sent it and vice versa.

In addition to these technical aspects, the concept of computer security is very large. Computer security's roots are drawn from disciplines like ethics and risk analysis and the major topics that are concerning it are computer crime (tries to prevent, detect and remedy attacks) and identity/anonymity in cyberspace.

Although confidentiality, integrity and authenticity are the most important things when it comes to computer security in general, for everyday internet users, privacy is the most important one, because many people think that they have nothing to hide or the information they give doesn't seem sensitive when they register with an internet service/site.

But remember that, on the internet, information is very easily shared among companies and small pieces of related information from different sources can be linked together to form something alot more complex about a person. Because of this, nowadays, the ability to maintain control over what information is collected about them, who may use it and how it can be used is extremely important.

Who Wants My Old Computer?

When I got my new desktop, I realized that I didn’t really need my older one anymore. I asked my friends and family, but no one wanted to take it from me. So I decided to try to make a little money from it by selling it. However, I almost made a huge mistake, but my friend was quick to point out the fact that I needed to do more than just place an ad to sell the computer.

What I didn’t realize is that my computer still had personal information on it. Stored deep in the hard drive, everything that I’ve ever done on that computer was still there. And while I did erase all of my files and even reformatted my hard drive, my friend pointed out that a thief or some other computer backer could still access my files if they really wanted to.

Needless to say, I was shocked by this revelation. The banking information alone might have gotten me into trouble if someone has found those numbers on my computer. My friend told me that some thieves will offer to buy used computers because they know that most computer owners don’t realize what they’re actually giving away – free information that will reap more money than the cost to buy the computer.

What could I do? My friend was also nice enough to show me that Drive Washer could completely wipe my hard drive clean of my vital information and then I could go ahead and sell it. The program was simple to use and all I had to do was watch the progress of the ‘washing’ to see when it was done. Of course, I was careful to make sure that I had taken off all the information that I did want to save, but after that, I started the program and let it do its magic.

When I was done, the computer was ready to be sold to a nice person who would be buying a great computer – and not just my information. If my friend hadn’t let me in on that tip, I don’t know what would have happened. I cringe at the thought.

Name For Your Computer… Should You Have One?

Have you thought of a name for your computer? Well, you should. Some people don’t have the chance to name more than one or two computers, while the site administrators name huge numbers of them. With that, it is a fact indeed that by assigning a name wisely, both the computer user and the administrator will have a quite easier time of reminiscing, discussing, and even typing the names of their computers.

A name for your computer is also that necessary for as soon as you deal with multiple computers, you need to recognize between them. Many cases regarding a name for a computer even surfaced today. A name for your computer is then significant for you to easily tell your system administrator that your computer is busted by just mentioning a name that you chose. Just like human beings, computers also have to be able to recognize between themselves. As we all noticed, when you are sending a mail to a colleague at another computer, you might apply commands that mention a name of the computer.

So if you want to know how you can pick a good name for your computer, it is then necessary for you to remember that there are certain problems that most people often stumble over and over again. For your interest, here are a few guidelines on what not to do when you want to choose a name for your computer.

One of the don’ts when it comes to a name for your computer is overloading with other terms that are already in common use. It is noted that using a word that has a strong semantic inferences in the recent context will just cause confusion. Secondly, don’t select a name for your computer that is subsequent to a project distinct to that computer. Along with this, here comes another consideration for a name for your computer and that is the “don’t” of using your own name. Even if you know that the computer is sitting on your desktop, you should be aware that it is a mistake to make a name for your computer that is after yourself. This is considered to be another case in overloading.

In choosing a name for your computer, you should not use long names. Using a long name for your computer may cause for a tough quantification, and many experiences have shown that names which are longer than eight characters simply annoy people. Also you should avoid alternate spellings. And even if you want to make a somewhat cute name for your computer by alternating the spellings, most people will often get annoyed with such names.

Just Whose Computer Is This Anyway?

Well, this is an article I never thought I would have to write. Computer ownership was just not something I thought people would get confused over but, after overhearing a number of conversations last week from my co-workers, I realized that quite a few people just don't know how cut and dry this topic is.

Here's the scoop. Over the last few weeks the company I work for has been going through a massive systems upgrade. And as part of that roll out, they upgraded everyone's computer with new versions of software via the network. Announcements were made everyday that the changes were coming and to save everything that you didn't want to lose.

This upgrade, like I said before, was massive. In some cases the software was completely changed over to a new package that the end user had not seen before. There were also security upgrades that allow for remote uploads of patches and system inventories of computers. In short, about the only thing that was the same was the physical computer itself and the files we had saved on our hard drives.

Access levels were changed, passwords were changed, unauthorized software and any related files were deleted, desktop options were locked, Internet access was throttled down (and a content proxy server brought online) and a whole host of other changes implemented. (IMHO, it was about time. The network was slow and the system about 5 years out of date. Here's kudos to one company trying to make it easier for it's employees to do their jobs...)

Boy, the wailing and gnashing of teeth I heard around the office would have made an IRS agent proud! Comments like, "Who said they could upgrade my computer" or "I didn't give them permission to access my computer" were common. I was floored!

Ok, I'm going to clear this issue up in short order (and I apologize for the "YELLING" below...)

Unless you purchased the computer you work on or you made a deal with your boss or you work for yourself, IT'S NOT YOUR COMPUTER! That's right. Take a deep breath and say the following with me, It's not my computer... It's not my computer... It's not my computer...

Write that phrase out on a sticky note and stick it to the monitor. Write it in ink on the back of your hand or set up a daily pop up reminder. Do something, anything you need to do to remember that the computer you do work on for your boss does NOT belong to you. This will save you a ton of grief in the future. Why? Well it's about privacy - your privacy.

Your employer has the right to do anything they want to the computers they have bought with their own money and connected to their network.

And if you connect a computer you do own to their network, they also have rights pertaining to the intellectual property that may be generated by or stored on your machine.

So what does this mean to you? Well, for starters, don't load anything on the computer that you don't want to be made public. Also, don't use company assets for personal stuff. In other words, don't load any banking software on the machine and balance your checkbook at work. You may lose your data files or you may even run the risk of having your bank balance exposed to the public. Or if you have any "questionable" surfing habits, surf at home. Most company networks today record and store everything, including all the places you go to on the Internet.

Want to see a good example of this? Just recently, a link was posted on the Internet that allowed anyone to go search through the complete email files of everyone from Enron. Enron, since they owned all the email that goes through their servers, decided that it was too much trouble to isolate individual emails for the SEC (that's the Securities and Exchange Commission, a GOVERNMENT agency. The IRS Agent crack above may not be a joke to some...) so they released ALL the emails stored or archived on their system.

Every email, whether it pertained to company business, the hemorrhoid problems of the guy in HR or how many times someone slept with someone else during lunch breaks is now out there for the whole world to see. (I don't know about you but that guy in HR better go see the doctor quick!)

I bet you are thinking that this kind of thing will never happen to you. Right, just wait. Employers are monitoring you at every turn. And if you don't watch out, you could get fired over some email you sent to your Great Aunt Sophie about your dog's coming surgery or a picture that got downloaded to your hard drive from some web page you visited.

Scary, right? You bet it is.

Ok, now that I have gotten my point across, lets take a more realistic look. Most employers don't have some dude sitting in a closet somewhere pouring over every email sent through the system or looking at every file on every employee's computer. The sheer number of people this would take is daunting.

However, what they usually do is use automated tools to look for patterns of abuse. Like multiple hits on an adult Internet site from the same user. They may scrub emails to look for offensive words, etc. Then once a pattern is identified, the employee is contacted and warned to stop. Rarely is someone fired straight out.

In today's world of increased scrutiny, it behooves you to play it straight with the computer at work. Leave the personal stuff at home. Who knows, you may be surprised by the increase in your productivity. At the very least, you won't have to worry over some person reading about your hemorrhoids on the Internet.

It's something to think about.

How To Speed Up A Computer - 6 Tips For Optimal Computer Speed

Have you ever been in the middle working on your computer and suddenly it froze, crashed or came to a slow crawl? And you had to restart, lost your work, lost time and felt so enraged that if you had an ax...STOP! Don’t kill the computer. Here are 6 tips on how to speed up a computer.

1. INCREASE VIRTUAL MEMORY:

Virtual memory is the space your computer uses when it's short of RAM (Random Access Memory), which is the memory used when running programs like Office Suites.

Resetting the virtual memory usage on your computer, also referred to as pagination, is great way speed up a computer.

To access and reset the Virtual Memory:

On the Start menu, click My Computer. The My Computer window is displayed. Click View System Information. The Systems Properties dialog box is displayed. In the Systems Properties dialog box click the Advanced tab. Under Performance, click Settings. The Performance Options dialog box is displayed.

In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab. Find the Virtual memory area. Click Change. The Virtual Memory dialog box is displayed. There you can make changes to the custom pagination. DO NOT exceed the limit given in the properties box of your windows system.

2. STORING FILES ON THE MAIN DRIVE:

Do not store lots of data on the main drive, which is where you install your windows operating system. Storing software like games, finance programs and other software on another drive of your computer is another way to speed up a computer’s performance.

3. RESETTING START UP MENU:

The speed with which your computer boots depends on the amount of programs that are set to be started automatically at booting. Removing unnecessary and unwanted programs from the start up process can greatly speed up a computer at the start up level.

4. TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE:

Having the system restore option on takes a lot of space from the hard drive. Freeing up a lot of physical memory by turning off system restore can significantly speed up a computer.

To access and turn off System Restore:

Click START, then click ACCESSORIES, then click SYSTEM TOOLS, then click SYSTEM RESTORE. Once there you can edit settings and then turn off the system restore option.

5. CLEANING INTERNET CACHE AND COOKIES:

Temporary Internet files affect browser speed. Regularly cleaning the cache and cookies will make your browser and computer perform at a faster speed.

To Clean Internet Cache and Cookies:

click Tools from your browser toolbar and click on Internet Options to delete and clear cache and cookies. This should be done on a regular basis to ensure ongoing improvement of computer performance and browser speed.

6. DEFRAGMENTING THE DISK:

Regularly defragmenting the drive will speed up a computer.

This tool can be accessed from the Start Menu then Accessories then System Tools.

WHAT ABOUT SOFTWARE THAT CLAIMS TO SPEED UP COMPUTERS?:

There is software out there that claims to optimize computer speed and performance, but these softwares are often costly and do not provide an all-in-one tool necessary to speed up computers to the max. And so you wind up buying several software programs, which ironically take up more space on your computer, in an attempt to fix multiple problems and improve computer performance. Not really the best solution.

How Computer Viruses Work And How To Protect Your Computer

Many people are afraid of tinkering with their computers because of the fear that they might inadvertently introduce a computer virus into the computer system.

Computer viruses have become the technological bogeyman that scares computer users all over the world. We have all heard of how dangerous computer viruses are and how it can damage your data. Of course, aided by the bloated images Hollywood movies paint with regards to computer viruses, a big majority now have this insane (but mostly unfounded) fears about it.

It is true that computer viruses are dangerous. Anyone who has lost vital information in their computers because of a computer virus will know how big a damage it can cause. But computer viruses are not these insidiously little pieces of code that could wreak havoc on the world. If you know what to do when you get a virus in your computer then you can definitely limit, if not totally stop, the damage it can cause.

But what is a computer virus? Well, it is a software with a small imprint that would usually attach itself on to a legitimate program or software. Every time this program is executed the virus is also executed and it tries to reproduce itself by attaching to other programs or it immediately starts affecting the computer. A computer virus and email virus basically have the same modus operandi, the difference though is that an email virus would attach itself to an email message or automatically send itself using the addresses in the address book in order to infect the people who receive the email.

A computer virus is usually embedded in a larger program, often a legitimate piece of software. The virus will be run when the legitimate software is executed. The computer virus would load itself into the memory of the computer and then it will seek out any programs where it can likely attach itself. When a likely program is found then the virus would modify the file in order to add the virus’ code to the program. The virus would usually run before the actual legitimate program runs. In fact, the virus would usually perform the infection first before it commands the legitimate program to run. This process is so fast that no one would even notice that a virus was executed. With two programs now infected (the original program and the first infected program), the same process would be repeated whenever either program is launched worsening the level of infection.

After the infection phase, or even within the middle of the process of infection, the virus would usually start its attack on the system. The level of attack can range from silly actions like flashing messages on the screen to actually erasing sensitive data.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can do in order to protect your computer from viruses. Among the steps that you can take are:

* The simplest way to avoid a virus is to install a legitimate and effective antivirus program in your computer. The antivirus program is designed to look out for any kind of activity that could be seen as similar to a virus attack or infestation and it automatically stops it.

* You can opt to use a more secure operating system in your computer. For example, Unix is a secure operating system because the security features built into it prevents a virus from actually doing what it is programmed to do.

* Enable Macro Virus Protection in all of the Microsoft applications resident in your computer. Additionally, you should avoid running macros in a document unless you have a good idea of what these macros are going to do.

* Avoid using programs that you have downloaded on the internet especially when they come from dubious sources.

* Never open an email attachment that contains an executable file – these are files with the EXE, COM and VBS extensions.

How To Protect Your Computer And Privacy Without Any Computer Knowledge

Cookies store information in small text files about the websites that you have recently visited. Therefore, it is essential that you delete cookies and history regularly. There are two types of cookies, namely, trustworthy and tracking. Trustworthy cookies are used for remembering the usernames and passwords, helps in tracking the items you have purchased using shopping car. Tracking cookies are used for monitoring websites.

Step-By-Step Techniques A Child Can Do

To delete cookies, open Internet Explorer > Click Tools > Internet Options > In the General tab, click “Delete Cookies.” > You will be asked whether you wish to delete cookies > Click Yes. Now, Click Settings > Click View Files > Press Ctrl + A > Click Delete. There are also a few software’s available for deleting third-party cookies like Cookie Crusher. Sometimes, when you install these software’s, it is possible that the internet speed is slowed.

To surf the web safely, you can update the relevant security patches that are available in the operating system vendor’s website. You might also use a firewall as it controls Internet Cookies and also blocks unwanted data. There are a lot of other hardware and software firewalls available on the web. In general, pornographic gambling, etc. websites pose a greater risk of installing spyware or adware in your system.

Other important things you will have to take care when surfing the web are to block pop-ups and disable AutoComplete.

To block pop-ups, you can download toolbars from Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. To add a site to the Restricted Sites zone in Internet Explorer, Start Internet Explorer > Click Tools > Internet Options > Click the Security tab > Click Restricted Sites, and then click Sites > In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the Web address for the site that you want to restrict, and then click Add. Repeat this step if you want to add other sites to the zone. > Click OK > Click Default Level to set the Restricted Sites zone to the recommended level, which disables Active Scripting > Click OK.

You can also disable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer for all sites. This might cause many Webs sites to be displayed incorrectly.

To disable Active Scripting for all Internet sites, Start Internet Explorer > On the Tools menu, click Internet Options > Click the Security tab > Click Internet, and then click Custom Level > Under Active Scripting in the Scripting section, click Disable > Click OK > Click OK.

To disable AutoComplete, Start Internet Explorer > Click Tools > Internet Options > Click the Content tab > Click AutoComplete > Remove the checkmarks from Web addresses, Forms, Usernames and passwords on forms > Click Clear Forms and then Clear passwords > Click OK > Click OK.

Unless absolutely necessary, it is not recommended to download and install any freeware. If you do download free software, only download from developer’s site. Many copycat sites exist that are fraudulent. Downloading from them will most certainly install spyware on your system.

It is also recommended to set the security settings to high if children have access to computer. This can be done by launching Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options > Select the Privacy tab > Move the slider and set the security settings to high. Also ensure that you do not click pop-ups.

Never ever store your email addresses and password in the system. People might get access to the stored passwords. The best way to store passwords is in the form of an encrypted file for example on a floppy disk. Buy a package of floppy disks from a computer shop and save a text file with your username and password. Then send the file to a floppy disk and delete the file from your computer.

You can also use a free software. This software called Password Safe will save your passwords on your computer but you will create one unique password to access them all.

This is also great if you do not want to use floppy disks.

If the above are followed properly, you just improved your security. The easy to follow instructions make your computer more safe and immune against threats.

Computer Security: The Essential Components For A Safe Computer

These days, computers are almost as common in households as telephones. Computers themselves do not cause any threat to individual security. When connected with networks and the chaos that is the World Wide Web, computers have become the tools that identity thieves and hackers use to extrapolate this chaos. In order to establish computer security, software companies have created devices to ward off the hazards and hassles of viruses, spyware, pop-ups and spam.

The first of these creations is anti-virus software. There are two main companies that offer this software: McAfee and Norton. These programs work to scan the files on your computer and check them for attributes that are in viruses or are often linked with viruses. These traits or attributes are often called virus definitions and need to be downloaded on a relatively regular basis. In addition to the files on your computer, files on CDs, floppy discs and e-mails can and should be filed. There is no question on this one: anti-virus software is vital to computer security.

Next on the list is spyware scanning software. Spyware occurs when certain websites run programs in the back ground of your computer while gleaning information from it. The information can be as benign as tracking what type of websites you look at, to actually acquiring passwords. Regardless of the type of spyware, it can slow your computer to a crawl and needs to be removed from your computer. Two popular software options are Spy Sweeper and Ad-ware.

Last, but certainly not least are pop-up blockers and span filters. Not only are pop-ups and spam annoying, but these often contain the spyware scanning software explained above. In addition, they can slow your computer down incredibly. And when you are angry at your computer, your computer is not secure!

In addition to these software items, there are a few more tricks you can use to keep your computer and your information secure. Password secure everything you can, and when you create the passwords, don’t make them easy. Do not use your name, your birthday or your social security number. And, if you are on an unsecured wireless network, do not check your bank statements. These networks allow several people on them at one time. Remember, hackers are smart. You have to be smarter!

Early Vintage Computer Buses Have Their Influences On Your Computer Today

The term “expansion bus “is a frequent term in vintage computer terminology which requires elaboration. Much of the legacy of vintage bus systems are in our current computer systems today.

To begin with the “expansion bus" is a data highway for computer data information to travel on: the bandwidth is in essence the number of lanes. The bigger the bandwidth the more data can be sent. As examples, an 8 megabyte bandwidth means that data can be sent in 8 bits chunks. Our current systems use between 32 bit and now 64 bit bandwidth.

An expansion bus is where cards connect to the computer; Cards have an expansion edge, which fits snugly into the bus much like an electrical plug fits into a wall socket.

When cards are plugged into the bus, they communicate with the system, sometimes through the BIOS and others not. (The BIOS is the basic input /output system that tells the computer how to move data from the different components.) The 8, 16 or 32 bit bandwidth is an important consideration due to communication time between the cards. For example you have a 16 bit vintage 286 PC and it is sending out data at 16 bits a: your video card is also 8 bits. If you have an older 8 bit bus, such as in early IBM PCs and clones, the bus will become a bottleneck in the system; it is like having a 4 lane highway connected to another 4 lane highway by way of a 1 lane road. At most times regardless of the faster 4 lane highway traffic will be slow – limited by the single lane connection road.

There were basically 3 types of expansion bus available in vintage computers: ISA, MCA, EISA systems.

Each early development in major ways paved the way for the later systems which indeed we take for granted today. This was both in terms of hardware and basic concepts in our computer systems and technology as well as computer marketing that we take for granted today as simple basic facts of life without any consideration due.

Basically the newer buses offered increased performance over the older technology buses.

The basic explanations of the buses are as follows:

The 3 bus standards to note were Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) .Micro Channel Channel Architecture (MSA) and Extended Industry Standard (EISA) bus systems.

Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). This was the original AT bus also called an ISA bus. It was the original 8 bit IBM PC bus which was bumped up to 16 bits at some point in its later development. Fine for a 16 bit 286 or very early 386 computers

Micro Channel Architecture (MSA). This was an early 32 bit bus system which was not received well but set the stage for an industry consortium of the major non IBM computer manufacturers ( at the time referred to as “The Group of Nine) to develop the EISA standard bus.

Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA). The EISA bus standard was a standard of its own right which was 32 bit, included bus mastering and importantly remained compatible with previous older expansion cards. 32 bit systems were first to incorporate in later 386 systems. The 486 line solidified and standardized the 32 bit systems in the established software of the day.

Backward compatibility at the time was a novel new concept which has remained an important consideration in the computer industry.

EISA slots would accommodate both the ISA and EISA expansion slots to allow hardware upgrades, However the EISA expansion boards would be of little advantage and would seldom work in the older ISA expansion slots.

On the other hand the Micro Channel setup was not backward compatible. On the one hand the Micro Channel developers were free to initiate new radical changes in computer development and hardware which would have allowed for major new useful features in computer software. However owners of previous systems would have been left with then obsolete vintage useless hardware which would have been of no use and certainly little financial value.

Hence there was a lot of resistance to the Micro Channel bus setup.

It died a lingering death with its legacy living on in the aspirations of features offered in future developments and standards.

Thus the die was set for future hardware standards and software function as well as standard computer marketing concepts that we take for granted like mother’s milk today.

How to Create a Distribution List in Outlook and Using Blind Carbon Copy

Do you send email to the same people over and over again? Instead of typing out the recipient's names, create a distribution list. Go to File

Click New

Click Distribution List The Distribution List window will open up. Give a name to the list, then press "Select Members". The Select Members window will open up. Double Click on the names you wish to add.

After the contacts have been added to the members field click OK. This will close the Select Members window. If you wish to add someone who is not on your contact list: Press "Add New" in the distribution list window. The Add New Member window will open. Enter the name of new member in the Display Name field.

Enter the e-mail address of the new member in the E-mail Address field.

Press OK and the new member will be added to your Distribution List.

Save and Close the Distribution List window. When you want to e-mail this group just type in the name of the List rather than each recipients name.

Now that you understand how to create a distribution list you should understand "Bcc" or Blind Carbon Copy.

"Bcc" allows you to send an e-mail without showing everyone the e-mail address of the recipients. It also is the polite thing to do. This way you're not inadvertently sharing a person's e-mail with a group of people they may not know, by including them in a mass email. You can also use the "Bcc" field to quietly notify a third party that a message has been sent.

Use of "Bcc" for long lists of addresses is important for two reasons: It protects the privacy of those to whom you send a message, and It makes forwarded e-mail less confusing to read When using "Bcc" add your own e-mail in the To: field to ensure yours is the only address shown.

All e-mail programs support "Bcc", but it may not be the default option. In Outlook 2007, click "New" for a new e-mail, then under the Options Tab click the "Show Bcc" button In Outlook 2003, click "New" for a new e-mail, then click the little down arrow to the right of "Options" and select "Bcc". Once selected, "Bcc" will be available for all new e-mails.

Here are some suggestions for using the different fields when sending e-mail. To: Add recipients who you are directly communicating with. There is nothing wrong with a list of e-mails, as long as there is no problem with each recipient being able to see the other recipient's e-mail address

Cc: Known as Carbon Copy. Use "Cc": to send a copy of the e-mail to recipients not required to participate in the communication. It allows the To: recipients to known that someone else is also receiving the e-mail

Bcc: Blind Carbon Copy is where you put e-mail addresses that should not be seen by other recipients.

How To Choose a Data Recovery Lab That Won't Let You Down.

When choosing a data recovery company to recover your valuable data it is very important that you make the right choice. They need to have a fully focused team of professionals 100% committed to your data requirements and it should certainly not be something they do as a background activity, so don't be afraid to ask some very pointed questions.

A true data recovery lab will be able to successfully recover data from Servers, Laptop's, Desktop's, CD/DVD's and all other types of storage media, not simply just from a failed hard drive.

They will have both the leading technology and skilled technicians to identify and solve the most challenging recovery situations presented to them, and, as leaders in data solutions they should be able to offer a full gamut of data recovery services including full server and raid data recovery capabilities.

A missing link in data recovery however in many businesses and one that is over looked far too often even by large corporations is data back up.

Why is data back up so Data Backup important for your company and your home PC?

Data back is essential to protect the data held on your servers, laptops, home PC's and flash media. This type of precaution will firstly give you peace of mind your data is safe and most importantly you will have the ability to restore you data should your media fail.

Although a professional data recovery service will prove very successful with the up to date technology, a small percentage or hard disk drives will always be unrecoverable.

Even if the data can be recovered using data recovery services it will be very expensive and you will be inconvenienced waiting for your data to be recovered.

You may think hard disks are very reliable and you have never had any problems in the past and that is true but most devices are prone to failure at some stage in there working lives.

Equally you can lose your data in many ways such as accidental deletion or malicious damage or virus. Having a continuity plan with a quick response time to get you back on track is paramount in any business.

If your data recovery company is a full service provider then chances are that they will be using the latest technology and can provide you with a fully automated and encrypted service to make life that bit easier and problem free each day.

If you forget your laptop/memory stick you can use your backup facility to access documents from another location and download your data with a push of the button saving you time and money.

Lab facilities

Most professional data recovery will have proper labs facilities not just a back office with a bench. The data recovery lab is often the heart and sole of the operation.

Keeping up to date with technologies and investing in research and development is essential to maintain a high level of performance at all times.

Lab facility should only be open to trained staff only and be the most secure area of the building. The entire lab should be ESD safe (Electrostatic Discharge) and operate a certified ISO class 3 cleanroom ensuring the highest standard of cleanliness.

You will find many data recovery companies are still operating within a class 100 facility that is in reality relatively outdated by today's stringent standards.

The sole purpose for these cleansed areas is to prevent contamination of the interior of your hard disk drive whilst internal component repair or replacement is being undertaken, and older facilities can still expose your drives to contamination risks that could leave it unrecoverable where they could remain uncontaminated in a cleaner environment.

RAID recovery

Businesses will almost undoubtedly require raid level data recovery or restoration at some point so you need to make sure that your data recovery provider has skilled RAID recovery engineers are specialists in the data recovery industry , and are familiar working with multiple hard disk drives from all types of RAID, NAS, Servers and X-Serve/RAID systems.

This level of service requires the most skilled recovery engineers to diagnose the fault(s) with great knowledge of file systems, hardware and software.

The type of fault recovery offered should also include corruption, damaged RAID configuration, failed controller, software damage, deletion, volumes unable to mount, failed rebuild, unable to boot server and hard disk drive failure.

A top class provider will understand that time is money for most companies, and that is why they will also have the most up to date high speed cloning tools and capacity to recover and restore your valuable data promptly.

Lost data can be devastating to both business and consumers alike, and all clients should be offered a quality and cost effective data recovery solution using the correct facilities and trained staff to provide you with the best possible chance of success. SQL Server Snapshot for SQL Recovery

MDF corruption is not an unavoidable incident and the backup is the optimum way out to avoid its after-effects. The growth of the SQL Server use has risen exponentially from the last few years and so do the need of SQL recovery means to cope up the weird instances of corruption.

SQL Server snapshot avails the good way out for those who desire to resist the data loss. This is like the picture of whole of your database that is used as the backup and is deployed with the split-mirror remedy. The snapshot is stored on the main hard drive and the changes which occur after taking the snapshot to the database are stored as the sparse file.

The use of this tool can vary according to the requirements of the user, from that of moderate databases to the extremely large. They are accomplished through third party software or hardware in which the instant copy of the data is being taken, either through splitting a mirrored set of disks or by crafting the copy of disk block, when the data is being written over.

When the user is intended to restore the database, then at the backdrop, the synchronization of the disks takes place and whole of the data is retrieved. You can have full backup, partial backup, file backup or differential backup.

The user can also drop the snapshot, but be sure that the information can be retrieved from other ways if the corruption takes place in the MDF file further. The user may be using this scheme for several purposes like testing, but if this has been intended for avoiding data loss, then proper reviews must be made during.

If the snapshot is not working as expected at times of need or the user was not alert enough to think such kind of solutions, SQL Server database corruption can drag you in the ditch. The corruption can be the outcome of many reasons, from virus attack to application malfunctions and SQL Repair becomes the tough job for the users.

But thanks to the technology that several MDF Repair software are available from different companies which can do this job effectively. These software retain the power to scan the affected database with the thorough inspection so that the data can be retrieved completely. MDF Recovery software have the geek ability to provide the interactive user interface to the users so that none of the user may find any kind of technical difficulty in use.

SQL recovery can be well handled by Stellar Phoenix SQL Database Recovery software, which is the most effective tool for same. This MDF Repair application makes use of the powerful scanning algorithms to work for all the objects of the database.

You can have SQL repair in all the instances of corruption with the few clicks of mouse. Just specify the path and make MDF Recovery, with the efficient and safe results.

The Challenges of Hard Drive Recovery

Businesses always are in the search to make some profit from their attempts. To that degree they have amenities in place to retrieve their precious data from corrupted hard drives due to a number of problems from usual surface level damage all the way in the course of the failed hard drive components.

The data recovery technique which is helpful in cases of hard drive damages is known as hard drive recovery service. Data recovery service is the personalized help provided by the data recovery experts in cases of physical damage to the hard drive.

The course of hard drive recovery is carried out in the controlled and safe surroundings of Clean Rooms (data recovery labs which have proper environment to open the hard drive and repair it). Data recovery service is provided by the data recovery companies who have a team of highly qualified and experienced data recovery professionals.

The price quoted by the data recovery company is usually based on he amount of endeavors, which require to be gone thorough. Simple disk level corruption could be solved very easily and they do not cost too much.

If the components of your hard drive are damaged, then it will cost you more. For instance, the hard drive might need to be disassembled and the damaged components need to be replaced or repaired.

Large scale damage to hard drive might require extracting it from the original covering and essentially replacing all the internals of the drive for reading data from it. It would be the most expensive case, but will succeed in the countenance of quite significant damage.

The data recovery specialists, required for recovering the data in most severe damages should be high technically skilled and should have several years of experience in handling such kinds of data loss cases.

The standard of a data recovery company could be measured by the standard of Clean Rooms and the tools and techniques they use to recover the data. Before fetching your hard drive to any data recovery company, you must see the track record of the company.

Stellar Information Systems Ltd is the foremost data recovery service and software provider company, having a golden track record with more than 15 years of rich experience. The data recovery service of the company is offered in State Of The Art Class 100 Clean Rooms.

The data recovery associates, who actually handle the hard drive, are having very sound technical knowledge and a long experience in this era. The tools and techniques used by the data recovery experts are superior and distinct. Stellar has 'No Data No Charge' policy in its data recovery service, means you have to pay only for what you get.

How to do New Software Testing

Software testing is the process used to measure the quality of developed computer software. Usually, quality is constrained to such topics as correctness, completeness, security, but can also include more technical requirements as described under the ISO standard, such as capability, reliability, efficiency, portability, maintainability, compatibility, and usability. Testing is a process of technical investigation, performed on behalf of stakeholders, that is intended to reveal quality-related information about the product with respect to the context in which it is intended to operate.

Today, software has grown in complexity and size. The software product developed by a developer is according to the System Requirement Specification. Every software product has a target audience.

There are many approaches to software testing, but effective testing of complex products is essentially a process of investigation, not merely a matter of creating and following routine procedure. Software Testing Axioms

1. It is impossible to test a program completely.

2. Software testing is risk based exercise.

3. Testing can't show that bugs dont exist.

4. The more bugs you find, the more bugs there are.

5. Not all the bugs you find will be fixed.

6. Product specifications are never final. Levels of testing

* Unit testing tests the minimal software component, or module. Each unit (basic component) of the software is tested to verify that the detailed design for the unit has been correctly implemented. In an Object-oriented environment, this is usually at the class level, and the minimal unit tests include the constructors and destructors.

* Integration testing exposes defects in the interfaces and interaction between integrated components (modules). Progressively larger groups of tested software components corresponding to elements of the architectural design are integrated and tested until the software works as a system.

* Functional testing tests at any level (class, module, interface, or system) for proper functionality as defined in the specification.

* System testing tests a completely integrated system to verify that it meets its requirements. * System integration testing verifies that a system is integrated to any external or third party systems defined in the system requirements.

* Acceptance testing can be conducted by the end-user, customer, or client to validate whether or not to accept the product. Acceptance testing may be performed as part of the hand-off process between any two phases of development. See also Development stage Alpha testing is simulated or actual operational testing by potential users/customers or an independent test team at the developers' site. Alpha testing is often employed for off-the-shelf software as a form of internal acceptance testing, before the software goes to beta testing. Beta testing comes after alpha testing. Versions of the software, known as beta versions, are released to a limited audience outside of the company.

The software is released to groups of people so that further testing can ensure the product has few faults or bugs. Sometimes, beta versions are made available to the open public to increase the feedback field to a maximal number of future users. Not all errors or defects reported must be fixed by a software development team. Some may be caused by errors in configuring the test software to match the development or production environment. Some defects can be handled by a workaround in the production environment. Others might be deferred to future releases of the software, or the deficiency might be accepted by the business users.

How do Data Recovery Software Help?

No matter how carefully you step ahead in computing and handling the data, the data loss cases (after deleting the important file accidentally) is the commonplace. If this appears similar to you and almost familiar, then you would be glad to know that there is a hope which can help you in coping such situations, called data recovery software.

The technology is always erratic and creates data loss scenarios for the users in many manners. Virus attack, intruders vulnerabilities, software malfunctions and lot others, these are few examples in which the technology always make you feel the need of data recovery software. These utilities are the best investment for retrieving the lost information.

These data recovery software are designed with the geek knowledgeable and expert engineers of data recovery industry and offer you the maximum data recovery surety, which varies according to the extent of the user in using the system even after the data loss. More the user will continue using the system, the chances of data recovery will degrade. This is due to fact that the visibly freed space gets occupied and hence the data gets overwritten with the new one, therefore the probability of data recovery gets down simultaneously.

Data recovery software are the competent tools to retrieve each trace of the data from the storage media. Superbly built to handle all the data loss scenarios, these software are valuable for different operating systems and their corresponding file systems.

However resisting the price tags, you may get tempted towards the cheap and thus unreliable utilities to recover the data which can't fetch you anything other than more mishaps and the lost chances of data recovery. Only the well adopted software will perform the best deal for you. Certainly, you need not to assume about how you will use the software as they come equipped with the intuitive interface which solves this issue.

The data is the lifeline for the organizations. The loss of even a single file can ruin the conditions for it and its employees and the data recovery software is the help in granted and can be availed at anytime.

What Your Quad Core Computer Can Do For You?

Quad core computer contains four processors and can be considered a part of multi core processors family. There is hardly any doubt that the performance of quad core computer is much faster than that of dual core computers. However, the performance of quad core computer depends upon the type of programs that run and the algorithms used in those programs.

There is a popular misconception that the quad core computer runs four times faster than the single processor computers. It does work, but for programs that are designed to perform on quad core computer. The codes written in those programs allow the processor to accomplish four different tasks simultaneously. Games such as Gears of War or Crysis which require multiple tasks like audio, physics benefit or AI to run simultaneously can be played through the multi-threading processors of quad core computer.

Performance wise quad core computers are faster in multitasking and parallel programming. For instance, multiple virtual machines can be run with four processors. Hardware virtualization, high-end video game playing provision, video and photo editing, audio transcoding, data folding, 3D rendering, voice recognition facility, the options are so many to choose from in quad core computers. You can run virtual studio on XP, work on Photoshop projects on core OSX install or do any other programs in lunux distro. You can also run XP virtual machine on top of XP. You will be able to run the maximum amount of virtual machines that ESX 3 is capable of running. However the number of Virtual machines you run depends on the memory space of your quad core computer.

While talking about quad core computers, it is worth discussing about certain models of the quad core family. The Kentsfield is the first quad core desktops range from Intel. Its High performance model was Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and mainstream brand was named as Core 2 Quad Q6600. Currently Intel has brought two other models: the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and the Core 2 Quad Q6700. Of these two, the Core 2 Quad Q6700 is just a modification from the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 adorned with a locked core multiplier.

Actually the Core 2 Q series processor of Intel is nothing but combination of two completely distinguishable Core 2 Duos packaged into a single-socket CPU. The L1 and L2 caches are different to the two individual Core 2 sets. Front side bus architecture is used to communicate with a unit of external memory controller of the north bridge. The initial Core 2 Q6700 shows an effective 1066MHz FSB clock speed with a bandwidth of 8.5GB/sec and the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 can go up to 1333MHz having bandwidth of about 10.7GB/sec.

Having said about the things that you can do on a quad core computer, the question that is being currently debated on is whether these quad core computers are a real need for this hour. For example, same performance and speed can be achieved with a dual-core CPU of Core 2 E6850 as with the Core 2 Extreme QX6850. So why you any user opt for quad core series which are expensive than the Core 2 computers? It is a fact that for general purpose use, today, Dual core or Core 2 is best economical option. Actually quad core computers were not designed for general users. It is for high end users who want to use complex algorithm programs, run parallel programming, multithreading as well as multitasking simultaneously.

However, with the advent of more complex coding programming, quad core computer is expected to be in demand in near future. In fact, computer manufacturers are positive about a significant growth of quad core computer users with in a year or two.

Trusted Execution Technology

Gradually PCs are arising as the utmost need of tech environment. They are the ultimate stores of data and valuable information. They are linked to internet and intranets and thus pose high risks for security.

The PCs operate on highly sensitive data and are thus very vital from security point of view. To safeguard them, users use all possible tools like Firewall mechanism, spyware or anti virus. But they can assure security from the outsider attacks like malicious users or hackers. But with the growing frequency of innovative solutions, it is not far that software only protections will be evaded in near future thus arising the need of some more sophisticated and innovative security solutions.

To offer a solution for the growing security needs, Intel started with a safer computing initiative named as LaGrande Technology. The technology was renamed as Trusted Execution Technology or TET or TXT. The concept deals with integrating security measures at hardware level. More precisely, TFT is a hardware extension integrated with Intel's processors and chip sets as a move to enforce security at hardware level to protect crucial data from any software bound attacks to maintain the integrity and confidentiality of data on PC.

So the question arises how this technology works? The technology ensures security by offering an environment dedicated fully to the application and protecting it from all the applications running or software on the system. It also maintains the backward compatibility of application which is an integral part of today's IA-32 PC. The Trusted Execution Technology platform delivers security by integrating a number of capabilities. The capabilities included in the platform are:

1. Execution in protected environment: TFT provides the application with the ability to run in isolated manner so as to offer them protection from the third party software and applications. This reduces the possibility of any compromises on information.

2. Encrypted storage: TFT offers ability to store data and keys in encrypted form with the constraint that they can only be retrieved in same environment in which they were encrypted. This helps in protecting the data from malicious attacks while transferring data from any other environment.

3. Input Protection: The technology offers protection to the input mechanism. It offers security to the communication between input devices like keyboard/mouse and applications running in the executed environments.

4. Verification: Under this capability the system offers verification that TFT environment was correctly invoked.

Besides this the TFT also offers capabilities to secure graphics and launch and registration of operating system and system software components.

The Trusted Execution Technology offers security by enabling two protection models: 1. Standard Partition and 2. Protected Partition

Standard Partition: The partition offers an environment similar to what PC users have on their PCs these days.

Protected Partition: This provides an environment that enables software to make use of underlying hardware based security enabled by Trusted Execution Technology. A protected partition requires a Trusted Execution-capable processor, chipset, and a domain manager to provide domain separation.

The technique can be discussed yet more elaborately but at concluding point it can be summarized that to ensure the safety of data and sensitive information against the security threats, the chip giant plans to ad-hoc the IA-32 PC architecture with Trusted Execution Technology.

Dangers of Illegitimate Registry Cleaners

A registry cleaner for Windows from legitimate developers can help optimize overall system performance through various automated means and user-configured processes. These registry cleaners are usually developed by reputable security software developers known throughout the industry. There are also new legitimate developers of effective registry cleaners, but users need to carefully consider the most important factors when it comes to the legitimacy and authenticity of such developers and their software products.

Rogue registry cleaners can damage systems and compromise the security of data stored in such machines. This type of software usually send prompts to users about fake malicious programs installed on the compromised computers. The prompts instruct users to purchase the full version of another rogue application that can help the fake registry cleaner ensure the full optimization of the system. These additional applications are usually rogue anti-malware products.

Other rogue registry cleaners from illegitimate developers have spyware capabilities. These fake applications were designed to create logs about the System Registry of the compromised computer and the data stored in it. These logs are stored in text files, which are subsequently sent to predesignated Web servers using the FTP and HTTP functions of the infected machine. The transmission of these text files are done in pre-configured intervals.

A few fake registry cleaners are embedded with harmful adware functions. These malicious capabilities allow such rogue applications to monitor the surfing habits of the users who browse the Internet on the infected machine. This data is then recorded for future transmissions to designated Web servers. Once the collected data has been transmitted to such remote locations, advertisements and spam relevant to the collected user data are sent to the compromised computers via FTP, HTTP, or email. New rogue registry cleaners are designed as Remote Access Trojans (RATs). These fake applications enable remote users to access compromised computers through the System Registry. This can help them extract private information about the applications used by users of infected machines. This data is then used for various illegal marketing activities. Some installed applications registered to the user hold confidential personal information that can be used by such malicious program developers for credit card fraud and spam.

Removing such rogue registry cleaners should be done before installing effective security software applications. This can be quite difficult to do, and it is advised for users of machines infected with such rogue registry cleaners to disable the machine’s Internet connection before proceeding with the un-installation of such malicious programs. Next, users should download and install effective anti-malware tools for the proper removal of such rogue registry cleaners because manual un-installation cannot guarantee the complete deletion of the fake applications and its associated processes. Finally, users are advised to enable the background monitoring capabilities of such legitimate security software tools to properly safeguard their systems against any malicious application.

It is also suggested to check out the various online registry cleaner reviews before making a selection.

Common Problems Attributed to Device Drivers

Microsoft Windows operating systems are considered as the most utilized platforms in computer systems around the globe. Despite the various efforts of the company to avoid any problems with the OS in assorted machines, there are still possibilities for errors to occur time and again. The most common problems with Windows operating systems are attributed to device drivers.

There are different scenarios that cause problems in a computer system due to the device drivers. These include:

1. Lost or Missing Drivers

This problem is caused when device drivers are moved to a different location in the user's machine. This is usually attributed to the improper installation of device drivers when users specify another installation location for the driver and thereby completely disregarding the default location predefined on the installer of the device driver by the manufacturer.

2. Updated Driver Needed

There are certain times when updated Windows operating systems require the latest version of device drivers for the hardware components installed in the machine. Some programs also require an updated version of a certain device driver to function without problems. This is a common scenario attributed to gaming software requiring the most updated version of sound and video card drivers.

3. Unknown Device

This problem is marked by a yellow question mark beside the driver list found in the Device Manager applet of Windows. There are various factors leading to this problem. These include:

  • Incompatible drivers installed
  • Unsigned drivers incompatible with the operating system
  • Incorrect versions of device drivers installed
4. Hardware Device Is Not Working Properly

This is a common problem experienced by novice computer users when they try to install device drivers into their machine for the first time. This error is also marked by a yellow question mark. This problem is potentially caused by corrupted or old versions of driver programs installed for the device.

5. Applications Fail To Load Properly

Some applications will fail to load properly or may cause a system crash when it detects an incompatible driver installed in the system. This is commonly attributed to device drivers for video cards required by gaming and graphic-based applications.

These are just some of the problems experienced by users associated with the device drivers installed on their machines. There are two ways to resolve these types of issues. The first is by using the correct device drivers developed by the particular hardware manufacturer that will fit perfectly with the unit's platform as well as the type of device connected to the machine. If you don't have the device drivers, you will have to resort to download drivers manually from the Internet from the manufacturer's website, by finding the model number of the hardware in their product pages, or in the download page. However this takes a lot of time and if you have more than one device driver missing, you might need to scour the web for hours to find all the right drivers. If by mistake you install one incorrectly, or you download an incorrect driver, it may cause critical errors to your system. Fortunately Uniblue have come up with an answer to our prayers. The application they developed is a godsend for people upgrading from XP or a previous version of Windows to Vista. The product developed by Uniblue is named DriverScanner, and it automatically keeps your drivers updated, backs them up by creating a software restore point, and much more.

Software Options For Small Business - Time Tracking Software

The use of time tracking software is a wonderful business tool. Timesheet software, which is also known as time tracking software, is all about tracking the total amount of time it takes each employee to complete any given task. This is a form of specialized accounting in which software maintains the timesheets for each individual employee within a company. The software makes it much simpler for managers and employees to track work time and work performance. It performs such tasks as vacation time tracking, compensation time tracking, and sick leave tracking. In addition, it accurately keeps records of how much time is taken to complete an entire job from start to finish. With these valuable tools, business owners can quickly and easily calculate the amount of effort put forth by each employee, as well as determine overall time-related expenditures.

Time tracking software comes in a variety of forms. For instance, stand alone software serves to record simple timesheets or generate reports, and is utilized primarily by smaller companies. For large corporations, however, a more advanced form is necessary which integrates into the accounting database. This variation of the software links directly to the payroll department, which in turn streamlines the whole accounts payable department. Invoices can also be generated through timesheet software when it is integrated with a billing system, and is used by professionals and contractors, since it is much easier to create bills based on time.

Timesheet software maintains these records automatically, providing data output according to the owner's specificiations. For example, the software could be programmed to produce a detailed report daily, at a certain time of day, and covering specific types of jobs or the performance of certain individuals. It can also provide a generalized statistical analysis of all aspects of the business according to desired templates. Timesheet software is much simpler to use than attempting to keep track of a manual timesheet. The time clocks built into the software are remarkably accurate, and are programmed to make notes of the designated times accordingly. Additionally, the software does not have any limits on the number of jobs or employees that it can manage. Once the software has been installed, everything runs automatically, with means that nobody needs to manually manage the program.

When it is time to analyze the collected data or make productivity reports, the time tracking software quickly and easily performs these tasks with only a few clicks of the mouse. The traditional ways of organizing and maintaining timesheets took valuable time away from the business or its employees. Today, with the invention of timesheet software, business owners can be assured that their needs will be met through this fast, reliable, and resourceful method of data organization and reporting.

It is of vital importance to any company, whether big or small, to accurately and regulary examine productivity reports. Timesheet software helps the company or individual to clearly identify business strengths and weaknesses, as related to time management and per capita expenditures. The software identifies tasks which appear to take too much time to complete. If you are one of the few business owners who are still using the old methods of pen and paper to keep track of your timesheets, it is time to update your business management systems to a new, digitalized processing program, such as through timesheet software.

If you would like to see how advanced time tracking software can get, click the link to try out a free, self-updating timesheet program!

Like a kid jumping into the pool feet first, the building industry has rapidly gone from lagging to leading in the use of computers. A mere 10 years agone, the world was fair acquiring secondhand to Windows 95. And although some progressive contractors were already using office automation, such as word processing and accounting, to gain a competitive advantage, many resisted, continuing to use their tried-and-true methods. Today computing device systems and the software system that drives them rich person gone from being individual tools applied to specific tasks to being an integrated part of how almost everything works.

And software package improvements, rather than something to be feared or resisted, now often make the same piece of equipment perform bettor. Contractors wealthy person jumped aboard with these improvements, and computers give birth become a vital cock in about every contractor's arsenal. Computer Hardware: The Five Most Popular Computer Upgrades

Everyone with a computer is looking to have the fastest, and most efficient computer filled with the latest computer hardwaretechnology. But to keep up with the continual changes as technology becomes more and more advanced requires complete upgrades on your computer. But, what are the best computer upgrades available?

Memory Upgrade

A memory upgrade is one of the most popular computer hardware upgrades and one of the easiest to do to boost the performance of your pc. But before you do a memory upgrade first check the BIOS operating system to determine how much memory is already on your system.

Also to upgrade your memory it will be necessary for you to open the case of your computer to find out how many modules are currently installed and how many slots are still empty. If all the slots are already filled you may have to remove the modules and replace them with larger ones.

Now, after finding out the current memory situation, review your operating system and application programs to determine how much memory is needed to make your computer perform at its peek level. In general, these programs provide a minimum and a recommended rating. So to reach the fullest potential of your computer, the memory should meet or exceed the recommended level.

Ok, so you now have some basic information to do your memory upgrade, but hold on a second, before running out and buying more memory, check your computer manual or go directly to the motherboard to find out what type of memory is supported by the current computer operating system. If you don't check this out you will most likely get the wrong memory chips and the memory upgrade will not work.

Also keep in mind When buying a memory upgrade module, that it is best to buy the largest amount of memory with the least number of modules. This way, there is room for growth in the future. For example, instead of buying two 512MB modules, purchase one 1gb module.

Video Card Upgrade

A video card upgrade makes it possible to play all of the great games that are currently available on the market. In fact, some games are so advanced that they won’t play at all without a very powerful video card.

But it can be tough choosing the right video card since there are literally dozens available. It is very important to first take a look at the motherboard to determine what type of video cards are supported by the system, you can also check your computer manual on the types of video cards your system will support. The best video cards are the ones that transfer data the fastest. In order from the fastest to slowest cards are PCI express, AGP 8x, AGP 4x, AGP 2x, AGP and PCI.

Sound Card Upgrade

The sound card improves the sound produced by the computer. This makes computer gaming more enjoyable, as well as listening to music and watching digital media.

In order to install a sound card, you need to locate an available ISA slot on the back of your computer. These slots are the longest sockets on the motherboard and there might be other cards already installed in those sockets. There are two internal openings on each of the slots at the back of the computer. So, remove the access plate at the rear of the socket to insert the sound card. Make sure the access plate on the sound card covers the hole created by removing the initial access plate. But, be sure to gently insert the sound card with a slow back and forth movement, otherwise the sound card can be damaged.

DVD Player/Burner Upgrade

With so many digital videos becoming available, many people are looking to upgrade to a DVD player and burner combo. The most powerful DVD player/burner currently available is the DVD+R/RW. These do tend to, however, be incompatible with older DVD-ROM drives and DVD players. But the current big names in the industry, such as Sony, HP, and Phillips, support these players. DVD+R/RW drives are faster than previous models and are capable of formatting while burning data to the disc.

Motherboard Upgrade

Now for those of you who are truly serious about upgrading your computer hardware, motherboard upgrades are another popular option. But of course, a motherboard upgrade is the most difficult upgrade to do and I certainly wouldn't recommend it if you don't have a strong background in computers and electronics. For those of you who can manage, however, you will certainly enjoy the freedom of never having to buy a new computer. Instead, the motherboard can be upgraded as technology advances.

In addition to eliminating the need to buy a new computer, a motherboard upgrade also makes it easier to upgrade other components on your computer. This is because purchasing a motherboard ensures receiving the most up to date technology, which is then compatible with other upgrade components.

Upgrading the motherboard, however, requires serious advanced planning and reading of your computer manual. If you don't do this correctly, your computer will be nothing more than a huge paperweight. If finished correctly, however, the computer will remain on the cutting edge of current technology.

Why is My Computer Running Slow? Learn How to Speed it Up Today!

You wake up one morning from a rather tiring overtime in your home office; you turn on the PC and went to the kitchen to prep up some coffee. When you got back to your desk, your PC still seems asleep so you went out to fetch the newspaper. You go back to your desk, and you just say to yourself, "Why is my computer running slow?"

You are not alone; so don't fret about it too much. There are so many computers that go through this stage for so many reasons. One of these reasons is a cluttered registry.

The Windows operating system depends on the registry to tune things up with the hardware components and software installations. The registry serves as the cache or database that collects all the information about anything that is attached to the computer, be it hardware or software.

Over time, this cache gets really cluttered and disorganized. When this happens, the OS will have difficulty accessing the necessary files to boot the computer well. You see, at startup, the computer will refer to the registry for all the events that are programmed to occur based on the installations of the user.

If a person decides to uninstall an application, that program is no longer able to run but its tail and so many traces of it are still residing in the registry. If all uninstall procedures fail to pull all their files from the registry for deletion, then the registry will be in such a mess - and the computer will tend to slow down.

When it happened to me it also hit me that the other major factors that make me ask, "Why is my computer is running slow" are the spyware, malware, and viruses, which often come with the programs I installed carelessly.

If you are asking, "Why is my computer running slow?" - you might be in need of a registry cleaner. This program will help you take care of the clutter in the registry and give it a nice, organized space for the next installations.

There are two types of registry cleaners - the stand-alone, or the one, which is part of a utility suite. Any people prefer to use the stand-alone since they think these programs run more efficiently because there are no other unnecessary functions aside from cleaning and clearing. Other users get the utility suites that include sets of tools that are packed together in one interface for so many uses.

The computer's registry can be likened to a brain that is too full of trash or unnecessary information. Often, the person will have senseless thoughts or mental blocks and that affects his overall function as a social being.

"Why is my computer running slow" is a question that can be addressed by making sure that you take care of your personal computer properly. That is part of your responsibility if you want to continue getting the best out of your machine. It is also best to be very careful with whatever you install since all the files that go with the program will sit in the registry and contribute to it's being bloated and dysfunctional.

Best Computer Speakers

Computer speakers nowadays are becoming more sophisticated in achieving the best sound quality for the fast growing market. Speaker systems come in a variety of features with the latest audio technology.

With the popularity of digital music formats, movies, digital video editing and computer games, manufacturers have rapidly developed and produced more and more computer speakers for their consumers. Speakers come in different models and designs, from 5.1, 6.1, to the latest 7.1 speaker systems.

The 5.1 computer speaker system is capable of creating a wonderful listening experience. One of the top quality 5.1 computer speakers is the Logitech Z-5500, with a price of $220. This speaker system tops in almost all reviews. The Logitech Z-5500 can produce heart-pounding bass, very natural mid tones, and crisp sound. It has superb power and accuracy when watching DVDs and when playing computer games.

Theoretically, the 7.1 speaker arrangement (satellite speakers plus a subwoofer) brings existing speaker systems to a higher level. Still, many experts question their value. According to Don Labriola of PC Magazine, "Depending on whom you talk to, 7.1-channel sound either is a legend of immersive audio or the reply to a query nobody asked."

With the introduction of the 7.1 speaker arrangement, another superior quality of multimedia sound is experienced. The 7.1 speaker arrangement is composed of 2 rear channel speakers. This is besides the 5.1 speaker system, with a set-up of 3 front speakers, 2 side surround speakers plus 1 subwoofer.

The gamers appreciate the 7.1 speaker arrangement more because it can be employed in computer games using Microsoft's DirectSound and Creative EAX sound processing. The 7.1 speaker arrangement does not have any difference with the 5.1 speaker system since audio CDs are recorded in stereo, only needing 2 channels. In terms of movies, the availability of the Dolby Digital audio is recommended for 5.1 computer speakers. It is best to use the 7.1 speaker arrangement with a high-end sound card to achieve its full features.

For the budget wise consumers who do not require the power of a surround audio quality, the 2.1 computer speaker is fine. You can still have the best listening experience with this speaker system. The Altec Lansing VS2421, with an estimated price of $40, is a good choice for a less expensive 2.1 channel computer speaker. The Altec Lansing VS2421 is rated as one of the best 2.1 computer speakers in the market. This 2.1 computer speaker can produce powerful bass. The Altec Lansing VS2421 includes a hardwired remote for controlling the volume and the treble. The remote in addition has a mute button, microphone, plus an auxiliary input for your mp3 player or CD player.

The Bose Companion 5 is an excellent choice for a computer speaker system. This computer speaker comes with a price of $400, a little bit expensive but the quality justifies the price. This computer speaker boasts its Bose's TruSpace surround processing technology. The speaker system comes with a separate volume control that also includes a headphone output and an input for MP3 players. Why Is My Computer Getting Slower?

Many people ask the “Why is my computer getting slower?” question each day. Well, to be honest, they’re asking because the computer probably is actually getting slower. As time passes, your hardware will age and as a result, it will slow down. Moreover, if you have filled your hard drive with junk files, then your computer will become really slow.

It is possible that you have a virus that is causing your entire system to become slower because it is screwing up vital files that your computer needs to run properly, but all in all, there are many things that can cause your computer to slow down and there are many things you can do to improve the situation.

Solution 1

One way to address the problem of your computer becoming slower is to clean out your temporary files. Over time, your temporary files can really add up, especially if you surf the net a lot. Windows writes temporary files for everything. If you are using XP, it is easy to clean out your temporary files folder.

Go to the start menu, then choose programs. After that, click on accessories, then choose disk clean up. This will help to remove all your temporary files and plenty of other junk files that may be hiding in your hard drive.

Alternative method: Click computer – right click your hard drive – select disk cleanup

Solution 2

You will want to keep your desktop free from shortcuts and icons. To clean up your desktop, you can delete the icons manually or you can clean it up through windows which is safer.

Begin by going to the start menu, and then to the control panel. Double click on display, and then click on the desktop tab. Click on the customize desktop button near the bottom. Next, click on the general tab, then choose clean desktop button, and this will get rid of the icons Windows feels you no longer use.

An even better solution would be to use a good registry cleaner, these programs will backup and then proceed to clean your desktop and registry for harmful junk files, the cleaning can have a dramatic effect on system performance.

Read our registry cleaner reviews by following the link at the bottom of this article.

Solution 3

Another problem of a sluggish computer is corrupt files within your Windows registry. The registry is a database that contains information for multiple users and contains all the settings for all of your software and hardware.

To clean this up, you can buy some registry cleaning software, always do a bit of research first. Lots of spyware programs mask themselves as registry cleaners, so it pays to find the best program on the market. On the other hand, you can try to clean your registry yourself, but you should only attempt this if you’re tech savvy, be sure to make a backup copy first.

As mentioned above a good registry cleaner will quickly scan, detect and clean the registry within minutes, attempting this procedure manually can take hours and hours.

Solution 4

The easiest thing you can do when you begin to ask the “Why is my computer getting slower?” question is to increase the speed of your computer by defragmenting your hard drive. When your computer saves a file, it saves it to first free spot it finds, and when that fills up, it saves the rest of the file somewhere else. This is a fragmented file, and your hard disk is full of them. If your computer has lots of fragmented files, then it takes longer to retrieve your data.

To fix this, go to my computer, and right click on your main drive. Choose properties. When the next window pops up, click on the tools tab up at the top, and then click on defragment now. Even if Windows tells you that you don’t need to run this application, it is still a good idea to do so. Keep in mind, though, that it does take some time, so do it before bed or before you go out for a while.

Solution 5

If you go online a lot, then your computer might contain malicious spyware and adware, and that alone can be the answer to the question of “Why is my computer getting slower?” It just seems to be the norm when surfing online these days that spyware and adware products make themselves at home on your machine.

There is software you can purchase to try and combat the onslaught of ads and spam you get while on the Internet. Spyware and adware can be hard to get rid of, and you almost need to purchase some software just to eliminate and prevent the problem. While you’re at it, you should also purchase a good anti-virus program to keep your computer free of nasty viruses that can rob your system of precious resources.

Maintenance Summary

1) Clean out Temporary files
2) Cleanup your desktop
3) Clean the Registry
4) Defragment your hard drive
5) Check for Viruses – Spyware and Adware

To keep you computer running quickly after many years can be difficult. However regular maintenance can really help prevent your system from slowing down. If you do feel your computer is running slower, start with the easiest tasks before moving on to something more difficult.

The Secret To Build Your Own Gaming Computer

For a gamer, what can be more fulfilling than to build your own gaming computer? In fact, the only way to get the best out of your computer and maximize your gaming experience is to build it yourself. However, there are tightly kept secrets among computer retailers that they don't want you to know, because it will affect their profitability to a great extent. This article will reveal the secrets that all gamers need to know.

Secret 1) It is very easy to build your own gaming computer

If everyone knows how easy it is to build a computer, then no one will be buying from the computer retailers. This is why most computer retailers tell you that it is very troublesome and complicated to build your own and it is better off to buy one off the shelf. In actual fact, my 10 years old kid took only 1 hour to figure out how to build a computer. How long do you think you need?

Secret 2) It is much cheaper to build your own gaming computer than to buy one off the shelf

Keep in mind that the main focus of the computer retailer is to make as much profit from you, not how good your gaming experience is. As such, never expect a cheap gaming computer from computer retailers. Occasionally, computer retailers may package their computers in a low price to entice you to buy. The fact is: you will not be getting the quality component that your price is paying. Most of the parts in the computer will not be suitable for gaming usage. It might boost the latest CPU in the market, but the power supply, graphics card, motherboards and memory are parts that get obsolete very fast. If you are patient enough to shop around and source for the parts you want, you can save up to 30 – 50% of what you going to pay at the retail stores.

Secret 3) Off the shelf computers are not upgradeable

Building your own computer allows you to choose the parts that are upgradeable in the future. Off the shelf computers don't and the retailers are keeping mum about it. Most off the shelf computers are using parts that will grow obsolete in a year or two times and the only choice you have then is to buy another computer from them again.

Secret 4) You don't need extended warranties and technical support

Your computer retailers will definitely sell you the benefit of having extended warranties and technical support because they know that most of the time, it will not realise and it is a pure profit for them. By buying one, you're betting that your product will break, that the extended warranty will cover the damage, and that repairing the product would cost more than you paid for the extended warranty. In that case, why bother to buy from them in the first place? When you build your own gaming computer, each part comes with warranty. Even if it spoils, you only have to change the individual part rather than the whole computer. This is much cheaper than what you pay for the extended warranty. In addition, the lifespan of a computer system is generally 3-5 years. By the time your whole computer system is spoilt, it is also time to get a new one because all your computer parts will be obsolete by then.

The only way to get the best out of your computer, be it the cost or the gaming performance, is to build your own gaming computer. Computer retailers are keeping mum about this fact and trying means to entice you to buy from them. If you are serious about gaming, don't ever let the computer retailers stand in your way of owning your very best gaming computer.

Essential tips for backing up your business data

Do you have a proper back up system for your business data? What would you do if a situation emerges where you have to submit the details of your final quotations to a client and just the day before, accidentally you happen to lose the most important file from your PC? The first thing that would strike you for sure is why you didn't take a back up of the file. Such incidents might even cause huge damage to your business. Thus if you really wish to avoid unnecessary damages, follow the tips described below.

1 Take the back up of as much data possible: Taking back up for your data has become very simple in windows XP and 2000 as you just need to take the back up for the C: drive. Thus most of your data is stored safely without many problems. But you never know when you might need a file. Thus the best way is to take the back up of nearly all the data in your PC. Atleast one extra copy of your business related files like the tax statements, financial records, text documents, the pictures and the important emails should be taken and saved.

2 Categorize all the folders: The back up of your business data should be categorized well so that later on you can easily navigate the data you wish to go through or is required. It also makes the backup a lot easier and safer. Taking the proper back up also avoids the over writing of files.

3 Figure the perfect back up means: back up of the important files, text documents and emails can be taken using the multiple sets of CDs, DVDs or the online services like the XDrive and the ibackup, the softwares like the BackupAgent etc. that are available on the internet. The media used to take the multiple copies of your business backup basically depends on the size and the requirements. For instance, if you have to take the back up of 2GB differently about four times, then you can use the DVDs but if you wish, you can take the back up separately on individual CDs. Also, in case you wish to go for faster backup services you can go for an external hard drive like the One Touch etc. or even the online services like the Ibackup which costs about $10 per month.

4 The best back up strategies: the back up of your business data can be taken using two different strategies like using the password protected backup software and the simple storage devices like the CDs etc. The first back of your business data is the most crucial as it forms the main baseline of your backup set. Name the backup sets uniquely, so that you can find them easily and differentiate them properly. This will also help you to use little space in the device and avoid overwriting.

5 Select the right back up medium: CDs and DVDs are fast and inexpensive storage devices which can be used to access your data from anywhere.

so, how are you going to take the back up of your business data and when? Don't avoid thus else you might recur large loses.

Top 10 Photo Printing Tips

For perfect pictures every time, follow these 10 simple tips for printing photos at home with a photo printer. 1. Use photo paper: Pictures printed on standard copy paper won't look like professional, lab-quality photos. Always use photo paper for printing your digital pictures at home. Note that there are two main types of photo paper, matte and glossy. Glossy photo paper makes for more vibrant colour prints, but it show fingerprints if handled frequently. Black and white pictures look especially striking when printed on matte photo paper. 2. Select the proper paper setting on your printer: Your printer's paper settings control the amount of ink that's put onto the page. The default setting is for standard paper. For optimal photo printing, select the "photo paper" setting or whatever setting most closely matches the paper you are using, such as "glossy." 3. Don't stack the photos: Your photos will still be wet when they come out of the printer. Remove each photo as it's printed, set it to the side and give it plenty of time to dry. If you allow the photos to stack up on top of one another, the wet ink will blur and smudge. While the photos will probably dry in less than an hour, the general guideline is to wait 24 hours before framing them.

4. Use ink and paper manufactured by the same company as your printer: Your photo printer is optimised to work with specific inks and papers. Although generic brands will work, your printer will perform best when you use ink and paper made by the same manufacturer.

5. Keep your printheads clean: Gently wipe off your printheads with a damp cloth if it has been a while since you've used your printer. Dried ink can clog the printheads, resulting in blotchy or incomplete ink transfer. 6. Select the right print resolution: Print resolution is measured in "dpi," which stands for "dots per inch." The higher the print resolution, the higher the quality of your printouts. For example, most printers have a "fast" or "draft" setting that prints quickly but at a low level of quality. Always choose the highest print resolution when printing out photos. 7. Utilise the print preview option: Preview your photo in the "print preview" mode before printing it out. That way you can see if the finished product is going to look the way you want it to. If not, you can make the necessary corrections, and you won't have wasted any ink or photo paper. 8. Keep your drivers up to date: Drivers are what enable your printer to communicate with your computer. Manufacturers update these drivers from time to time. To keep your printer in peak operating condition, be sure to download the latest updates. 9. Match megapixels to picture size: The more pixels an image contains, the more detailed it is. Trying to enlarge a photo with a low number of megapixels results in a blocky, "pixilated" look. For example, a 2 megapixel picture can be printed as a 4x6. To look good as an 8x10, however, the image should have at least 8 megapixels. 10. Crop before printing: If you really only want to print the subject without all the surroundings, simply crop down the image. Not only do you wind up with more attractive photos, you also save ink and paper.

Five Surefire Tips to Protect Your Computers from Hackers

Hacking attacks are constant worry and perennial headache for any network administrator. More interestingly and ironically, the best defense against them comes from hackers themselves. But these hackers are of a different kind and breed they are ‘ethical hackers’.

While companies and government organizations all across the world are spending huge sums on hiring professional network security experts or ethical computer hackers, you can make your computer secure by being a little more careful and by keeping your system equipped with next generation anti-hacking solutions. Let’s see how… 1. Always use the latest version of anti-virus software applications. With good anti-virus software, whenever a hacker tries to access your machine you would be warned about it so that you can take necessary steps before any damage is done.

2. Always keep the firewalls in active mode as it will prevent unauthorized entry by the hackers.

3. Keep checking the programs running on your system on a regular basis. In case, you come across some program that you might not have installed or which does not form part of standard operating system, then be alert and cross check it as it might be some sort of spam.

4. To minimize risk against virus attacks and hackers, keep your operating system up to date as it allows the machine to be aware of the latest discovered security holes. If you don’t do that, you are just giving open invitation to the hackers who just evolve from every failed or ‘taken care of’ hacking attack.

5. Never ignore the patches when they arrive for installation. Usually what happens is that a hacker makes a way to enter your computer through some common programs. By installing security fixes and patches you make your computer safe from hackers as they are developed with the sole motive to fix security related issues.

Well, these tips are just the primary precautions to keep your system safe from the hands of hackers. But it’s better to take help of experts to take care of security measures. Many companies nowadays employ ethical hackers with knowledge of network security, cracking and hacking to counter the menace of criminal hacking.

Let me explain a little more. Hackers are broadly categorized into three groups:

- Black-hat hacker- These are the malicious or criminal hackers that break into networks or computers, or create computer viruses. - Grey-hat hacker: These are skilled hackers who have mixed characteristics of white and black-hat hackers. They usually hack for fun or challenge but in the process can do some pretty damaging things.

- White-hat hacker: These are ethical hackers whose task is to provide security and protection to IT systems. Such people are employed by companies to enhance their IT security and keep their network systems free of hackers and spammers.

Ethical hacking is thus fast becoming a chosen career option for young IT pros given the fact that the IT security market worldwide is growing by leaps and bounds. There are various courses available for computer hacking and network security training. Professional cracking tutorials and other courses prepare IT security pros for attractive careers in big organizations.

Some Data Prevention Tips during Thunderstorms and Blackouts

You are always advised to give the attention to the warnings related to current heat wave so that data loss can be prevented. The risk of data loss due to thunderstorms and blackouts from the PCs and Servers has always been there as this may become overheated by direct or indirect lightning strikes or the hot climate. All such instance raises the need of data recovery.

In the office environment, some musts are there which should be followed when you go for the settlement of the computers:

• The surroundings of the computers should be cool and dry to prevent excessive overheating and moisture and hence data loss.

• The other most important recommendation is not to arrange too many computers to be running off one power supply through an extension cable.

• Installation of the surge protectors between the power socket and cable provide a great help to avoid blackouts.

• All the arrangements should be checked on the regular basis.

• Dedicated circuits must be used for each system instead of sharing them with those of air conditioners or fans.

Data loss can be the outcome of thunderstorms. The power cord of the systems and the telephone lines from modem jacks should be plugged off. This recommendation is given due to the reason that high voltages may enter the computer system through a phone line connected to the modem and may cause data loss.

Using the uninterrupted power supply is the way to prevent certain data loss situations. These equipments have the feature of having the backup power to prevent power outages.

These data affecting incidents may directly make impact on the hard drive physical arrangement. Some of the internal components may burn out leading to the hard drive failure. Extensive heat may be the reason for this. Similarly excessive moisture may harshly affect the data, which is another physical cause of data loss.

In all such cases, data recovery services would do a great job. This the help in which the affected hard drive is analyzed by the data recovery experts in the clean environment of Clean Rooms and the effective measure is taken to carry out the data recovery, like replacing the damaged hard drive components, making the drive image and so on.

Must Do RAID Recovery Tips

Lost data? Your next steps are critical to complete a hard drive recovery!

To avoid permanent data loss, follow these important guidelines:

If your drive is making clicking, grinding or whirring sounds, shut down your computer immediately. These sounds could be the read/write heads hitting or scraping the platters. Severe or complete data loss could result.

Unplug the power to the computer then remove the hard drive. Handle the drive carefully. Hard drives are extremely sensitive to static electricity and physical jarring or jolts.

If your data is critical, make sure you choose a reputable recovery firm that can properly recover data from physically damaged drives. Even the simplest recovery attempts on a physically damaged drive could render your data unrecoverable.

The first recovery attempt is always the best recovery attempt. Our engineers use the safest methods available to insure your data is not lost from repeated recovery attempts.

When disaster strikes:

If possible, back up the data immediately Do not use utility software if the drive makes scraping, tapping, clicking or humming sounds

Do not power up a device that has obvious physical damage or is making unusual sounds. Shut down Turn off the drive and its data. Do not attempt recovery yourself on severely traumatized drives (i.e., turning the computer off and on, using over-the-counter diagnostic tools). This may cause further damage or permanent data loss.

If you've lost critical data, our recovery service is your best and safest option for you. Never assume data is unrecoverable. We have successfully recovered data from hundreds of thousands of drives with extreme physical and logical damage. Preventing data loss

Everyone should adopt strategies to ensure critical information is protected from corruption and loss.

Best practices: Never upgrade any system without a verified backup.

Use up-to-date hardware and software utilities for data security, such as firewalls and virus protection. Scan all incoming data for viruses, including packaged software. Use ventilation, fans and/or air conditioning to keep servers at the proper operating temperature.

Connect systems to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect against power surges.

Power down and take extreme caution when moving computers. Avoid static discharge when touching or handling the media, especially in excessively dry environments.

Backup strategies:

Invest in redundant backup systems:

Establish a structured backup procedure to make copies of all critical data files, using software compatible with the operating system and applications.

Periodically test the backups to verify that data, especially databases and other critical files, are being backed up properly. Keep at least one verified copy of critical data offsite.

IT Comp TIA Certification: For Those Who Network and Those Who Secure

In terms of job options to select from and career avenues to follow, of all the fields out there to pursue it is certain that within the IT working world not only are a slew of selections available, but a handful of opportunity is also provided. Experience a side, no matter if you're extremely well-versed in computer and/or information technologies, or are, on the other hand, out of the loop with the computing world - yet enthusiastically willing to learn - there's an IT spot for you. And of the many choices available there is one that seems to be a shining choice, offering both promising results and lucrative outcomes. This IT option is that of Comp TIA, specifically Comp TIA Network+ and Comp TIA Security+.

Comp TIA Network+ and Security+ - Both Are Fine Choices

So, whether you're looking to get into networking or security operations, the Comp TIA realm of the IT working world can undoubtedly prove to be a beneficial pursuit to better your current work proficiency (as well as status) or even sturdily start you out as an IT certified professional. And it's clear that being certified in the IT world is essential to making the most money, gaining the highest level of respect and attaining career-improving promotions. Overall, gaining certifications in either of the Comp TIAs will be a great asset and accomplishment to have; this is so simply because both the networking and security work forces are constantly evolving and rapidly expanding, and as such, are continually requesting for a larger and much more adept workforce.

But, I'm sure you want to know just exactly what both the Comp TIA Network+ and Security+ certifications are all about first, right? Of course you do.

So, What Is This Comp TIA Network+ Certification?

As a vendor-neutral certification you'll know that you have options in selecting which vendors to work for and under, such as Microsoft and Cisco. Now, what you'll gain from such a certification is more or less a stamp of credibility to your specific title. In this case, you will gain competency in network administration and overall support. So, what does this confirm about you once you've completed the certification? Well, a few things. Of the knowledge gained you will confirm to current and/or prospective employers that, as a technician, you have the aptitude of media and topologies, standards and protocols as well as network implementation and general network support.

Through the examination process, you will also gain such knowledge as all-purpose security, how to keep safety in mind as well as how to communicate well, in a professional and proper manner.

And, What of This Comp TIA Security+ Certification?

Again, being a vendor-neutral certification, you'll have options. In terms of what you'll gain here, expect to know everything about IT security. Through gaining this certification you will validate, from your technician stance, that you are fully knowledgeable of communication security, infrastructure security, operational security, cryptography and all other rudimentary and general security concepts.

Why is this a worthwhile certification to pursue? Due to the simple fact that most security breaches are caused by the lack of a refined security knowledge and overall human error, having a Comp TIA Security+ certification is comfort to the working IT community's ears. This is so simply because this certification proves that you have competency and credentials with IT security, and hopefully (“canceling” out human error) the knack to stop an infrastructure break in way before it's even attempted.

With the above knowledge, all you have to do now is decide and research which Comp TIA Certification is best suited or most interesting to you. So, what are you waiting for, an IT invitation? Get to it.

Network Time Synchronisation using GPS

Nowadays GPS is most commonly known for vehicle navigation solutions. However, the GPS system can be used for many other useful purposes. For instance, many computer network time synchronisation solutions, such as NTP time servers, use the atomic clocks on board each GPS satellite for accurate timing. The GPS system can be used as an accurate reference clock for synchronising time-critical applications on computers and networks. This article describes how computer systems can utilise GPS time and discusses what equipment is required to provide a precision timing reference.

The GPS system is a United States military system intended for global navigation. The GPS system is a space-based system, consisting of a network of 24 orbiting satellites. Precise navigation and positioning is achieved by utilising precision timing signals and triangulation between multiple satellites. Each orbiting satellite has an integrated atomic clock timing reference to provide ultra high precision timing. Each satellite broadcasts timing information to within a few nanoseconds of the correct time to provide positioning to an accuracy of better than 10m. This precise timing information can be used by NTP time servers and other computer timing equipment as a highly accurate time reference. The great thing about GPS is that it works anywhere in the world and is entirely free to air service.

Each GPS satellite transmits a low-power radio signal down to the surface of the Earth. Two separate frequencies are utilised, designated L1 and L2. The L1 band is the civilian signal; transmitted at 1575.42 MHz. L2 is the military frequency, intended for ultra-high precision positioning. Broadcast radio signals travel through the air by line of sight. The transmitted signal is easily powerful enough to pass through clouds, glass and most plastics but is absorbed by more substantial material such as brick, roofing materials and metals. Ideally GPS antennas require a good unobscured view of the sky. Therefore, ideally the antenna should be located high-up with a good all-round view of the sky.

With the advent of GPS navigation equipment for the mass market, GPS antennas and receivers can be obtained at very reasonable cost. A GPS antenna is utilised to receive and amplify the GPS radio signals. While a GPS receiver decodes the information and presents it in a computer readable format. Many antennas are available with integrated receivers but these have the drawback of only providing a few meters of cabling to the host NTP time server or computer system. Marine antennas are designed to withstand the worst of the weather, they typically screw onto a threaded pole to provide a secure mounting system. These antennas provide the best solution for static timing applications.

The GPS receiver is generally embedded into the NTP time server or encapsulated within an enclosure. A GPS receiver is a small elecronic device that receives amplified GPS signals from an antenna via a coaxial cable. The receiver decodes these signal and provides a computer readable output usually via a RS232 or USB interface. Most receivers provide decoded information such as: position, visible satellites, precise time and an accurate pulse output timing reference.

Coaxial cable is utilised to provide a connection between the GPS antenna and receiver. The cable distance can be critical. Any GPS antenna has to amplify received signals enough to overcome cable losses over the intended cable run. Better quality antennas generally provide more amplification (gain) additionally higher quality coax cables can be used with much smaller signal losses per meter allowing for relatively long cable runs between a antenna and receiver. For longer cable runs, an amplifier can be used to further amplify GPS signals to overcome cable losses. Typically, a GPS amplifier sits in-line on the coax cable and is powered from the receiver. Multiple amplifiers can be used for extremely long cable runs.

A roof mounted GPS antenna can be prone to lightning strikes and voltage surges. It is recommended that surge suppressors are utilised to protect expensive NTP time server and timing systems from potential damage. A surge suppressor is essentially a barrier that sits in-line on the coax cable between the antenna and receiver that protects the receiver from any potential damage due to voltage surges.

To summarise, the GPS system provides a highly precise timing reference for NTP time servers and other computer timing equipment. It is a reliable free to air service that can be used anywhere in the world. Additionally, with the boom in vehicle navigation systems the technology required to receive GPS broadcasts is continually falling in price.

Home Network How To - What Kind Should I Use?

When I first started in computers, one of the most confusing things that I ran across was how to set up a home network. The differences between hubs, routers, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and cabling were a mystery to me. But after much trial and error and built-up experience I managed to figure things out and some of that information I will share with you now.

There are two basic types of networks that I'm going to talk about in this article first being the infamous ICS or Internet Connection Sharing. ICS is usually implemented by connecting multiple computers through the hub to a single computer. Let's say we have three computers, Computer A, Computer B and Computer C. Computer A has enjoyed a high speed Internet connection and after a while, Computer B and C want to get in on the action! In order to implement ICS, we would have to connect Computers B and C to a hub.

A hub is basically a switch that allows any computer hooked up to it to communicate with any other computer hooked up to the hub. So with all three computers hooked up to it, we would set the network up on the computers to use ICS. Computers B and C would be told that they're going to connect to the Internet through another computer that has a high-speed Internet connection. While Computer A would be configured to enjoy its high-speed connection as it did before.

Like this, Computers B and C would enjoy a relatively fast connection to the Internet as would Computer A. The problem here starts when all three computers are accessing the Internet at the same time. Computers B and C would enjoy a relatively fast connection to the Internet while Computer A would suffer some moderate slowdowns because it not only has to handle its own traffic but the traffic of the other two computers as well. The user on Computer A is going to get quite upset if Computers B and C decide to download files at the same time. Because downloading a file is such a data intensive process, demanding large amounts of data be transferred from the Internet as fast as possible, Computers A may suffer some severe speed problems because of the demand being put on it from the other two computers.

Unfortunately because of the fact that the hub does not have built-in firewall or any other such software that can protect the computers behind the hub Computers A must also be running Windows firewall in the background which provides an additional performance hit.

So although the ICS is the cheapest way to go, it is definitely not the speediest way to go. In fact, to be honest, I would only follow this route if the users of Computers B and C had something against the user of Computer A and want to get even!

The second type of setup that I'm going to talk about it is the router based set up. Nice thing about the router is that most routers are very intelligent. They have built-in firewalls, parental controls, can block sites or even allow users to have access to your network from the outside if they know the proper passwords and/or ports to connect through. No additional software is required that might add a performance hit and all three computers get configured the same way.

To hook up or router you simply plug a cable from your Internet connection into the router then plug the three computers into the router as well. When you set up your computers you tell networking software that all three will computers have direct access to the Internet. There is some setup involved with router as is usual with any complicated piece of hardware but usually it is very painless and if you follow the instructions, quite easy!

The nice thing about router set up is that once it is set, up all three computers enjoy the same speed advantages of being on a high-speed Internet. No one computer is impacted by the fact that someone else is downloading a file. In fact, all three can download a file at the same time and still enjoy impressive speed while doing so! Face it guys this is the network that you want to set up if your wife is on Computer A!

Routers tend to be a little more expensive than hubs but the advantages of having them a part your network far outweigh any price difference. So if you must go with ICS, then do so with pride! But personally, I would recommend spending the extra money to go the "router route"!

Very Easy Home Network

Ahhh yes, life’s pretty sweet with that high speed DSL line. But there is a glitch. The normal ISP dial up account can be used from any computer in the world. A DSL line connects to only one computer.

The obvious solution would be to install a network to carry the line to every computer in the house. I've steered clear of a having network in my home office. I once spent several days trying to hook up 2 computers using Windows 95, and finally gave up after only intermittently being able to make the computers communicate. I swore that my days on the floor with my computers were over and I ran my own "network" by transferring Zip disks from one computer to another.

A new technology is on the horizon, the Home PNA (Phone Networking Alliance) network. I remembered reading about this network that would connect through existing home phone lines. It was in its infancy - so I checked around.

HPNA has made some amazing strides. Now in version 2.0, it will run your home network at ethernet speed, 10Mbps (ten megabytes per second - the same speed as a real corporate network) and extend your high-speed internet connection to anywhere in your home or office. After checking out all the reviews, the same name kept coming up: Netgear. Netgear offers a home PNA card that not only is plug and play, but also allows you to talk on the phone while using the network. Netgear's "do-not-disturb" feature causes it not to completely take over the phone line, nor will talking on the phone degrade the speed of the network connection.

The card was simple enough to install, just open the computer case and snap it into an available slot. Of course, this is usually the time that things go sour - when you start up the computer. Amazingly, "plug-and-play" was never easier. At first glance the instructions supplied on a single page fold-out sheet look like they’d never do the trick, but they do. Netgear includes a CD with all the software that you need. No need to search for the required drivers, their set-up program takes you step by step. Within a few minutes, you’ll be able to print a page on a remote computer’s printer or share files. My teenage daughter installed the network on her own computer, and we can now share printers, files, a CD-burner and internet connections without using our "sneakernet" of the past. My favorite part of the setup is the new Home Network USB adapter. I clipped the small unit to the back of my laptop, and literally within seconds, connected to my other computers! If this sounds too easy, it probably is. I’m no techie and it worked for me on first try. One caveat though, when it comes to sharing a high speed internet connection over a Home Network line, there are a few more steps. You need to set up a TCP/IP connection. My advice? Don’t even attempt to do it unless you know what you’re doing. Call Netgear’s 24/7 tech support at 888-NETGEAR. They’ll patiently walk you through it, step by step. I feel like I've really accomplished something, it's not "black-magic" any more. I have a flawless network that I never realized could be as useful as it is. I have a warp speed internet connection that goes beyond my wildest dreams. I passed the boundaries from novice to geek with the help of modern technology. Now my mornings are complete. I can stay that extra ½ hour in bed, watching Matt Lauer and Katie Couric on the Today show. No need to zoom into the office to check my auctions and email. I can just plug the laptop into the phone jack and fly like the wind.

A Small Business Network Security Survey

Many of today's small businesses use PCs and a server network to facilitate their operations. Important company information is stored in electronic format on these networks, and daily operations are dependent on the network being both available and secure. In many cases, these small businesses ignore or are unaware of the risks that could compromise the safety of the data. To better understand these issues, two hundred of these small businesses were interviewed about their network security. Companies ranged from those with ten employees or less, to those with over a hundred staff members.

Over half of the survey respondents believed that their network was adequately safe or very secure. A large number of respondents did admit that they doubted their defenses against an attack. This isn't too surprising, as nearly all businesses have experienced some type of security threat in the last year, from lost computers or back-up takes, hacker attacks, viruses, or theft by employees.

The top three threats reported were:

1) Trojan horse or virus attacks 2) Stolen or lost computers, including data storage devices 3) Employee theft or hacker attack

Company defenses reported include:

1) Virus Protection 2) Firewall 3) Spyware Protection 4) Spam Filters

Recommendations:

Most companies reported that they lacked a smart password policy, automated patch management, and employee network use policies. Generally, many of these businesses don't have full protection against an attack, and have not yet had to put their defenses to the test.

There isn't one single fix to ensure secure continuity of operations on a network. However, we recommend a layered approach in managing these pressing security threats. This layered approach examines vulnerability in different areas including hardware, software, processes, and training. Every layer added another level of protection to the information environment.

1) Blocking network-based attacks 2) Blocking host-based attacks 3) Eliminating vulnerability 4) Supporting authorized users safely 5) Tools for maximizing effectiveness and minimizing losses

To assure the continuity of your business operations, regular testing of these security measures is required.

Level of Overall Security:

Over half the respondents stated that they thought their network was secure enough or better. 30% of the remainder thought their network was only somewhat secure, and over 10% confided that their network was not as secure as it should be.

These small businesses tend to believe that their network is relatively secure: 63% of businesses with less than ten employees and almost 75% of those with between eleven and twenty-five staff members. The larger companies were not as sure of their defenses, with over half of those with fifty to one hundred and 44% of those with over a hundred employees felt secure or secure enough. In the fifty-one to one hundred staff category, over 20% reported that the network was not as secure as should be. In general, the bigger the company, the larger the network - and the greater the number of security risks it must defend against.

Experienced Threats:

The respondents reported on security lapses or attacks that they'd experienced over the last year. The survey showed that Trojan horses or virus attacks are the most common threat to the network, with about half reporting experiences with these issues in that time. The larger companies reported at 40%, the lowest rate, which is indicative of better defenses. Over 60% of the smallest companies reported virus-based attacks.

Loss of company information from theft or loss of storage devices appeared to be a minor threat for smaller companies, but this risk increases with company size. Over 33% of the larger firms reported this sort of experience. Hacker attacks were most often experienced by firms with less than ten employees and those with over a hundred. It seems the smaller networks are more vulnerable, and the largest ones are high-profile, with a greater chance of becoming a target. Unfortunately, staff members can create a security risk themselves; about 10% of businesses reported that they had experienced unauthorized access or theft in the allotted time frame.

Devices and Procedures:

Good procedures, processes and systems can help defend against security threats. In the survey, respondents were asked which security methods were in use. Most reported that they had virus protection and firewalls. Around 25% lacked spam filters and spyware removal, leaving networks open to malware which ranges from dangerous to annoying. Under 50% have patch management or a smart password policy in place. This smart password system uses passwords with a mixture of normal and special characters which are frequently changed.

As compared to the largest companies surveyed, smaller businesses are less-often implementing network use policies for employees. Over 80% of the larger companies have defined guidelines for proper and improper network use. These guidelines attempt to lower the amount of network activity unrelated to the business, which result in increased security risk. Many of the respondents use wireless networks. Wireless networks are some of the most vulnerable access points if not well-secured. Only a few companies reported that they use all the top-priority security measures listed in the survey.

Testing:

No security device or feature can be known to provide real defense until it's been tested. Anti-virus specifications could be out of date, a hole could exist within a firewall, or staff members could not be using the correct practices for a safe and secure network. About 25% of respondents indicated that either they couldn't remember the last time they tested their security, or didn't know that they ever had. This seems to indicate that while many have implemented security defenses, they can't be assured that the expected protection is actually provided.

The very smallest companies least-often tested their security measures. About 10% of businesses had tested security, but not for over a year. As the threats change over time, dangerous lapses can occur without periodic testing. Around 33% of respondents reported that they'd tested their security measures within the last month. Validation of network security elements on a regular basis is important to system integrity in an overall continuity plan. It is unfortunate that usually a company only examines its level of exposure after a damaging event which negatively affects the business.

How to Remove Winfixer Virus

A rogue security program called WinFixer started its notorious existence about three years ago. Back in 2005 winfixer looked a part of Windows Security Center, informing PC users about detected spyware instances and advising to download a cure.

Sadly, many web surfers fall for the trick and installed an application allegedly recommended by Windows itself. The installed program never did what it promised; instead, it kept showing scary messages about system intrusions and spyware danger, trying to alarm the user into buying a full version of winfixer. Those who purchased license keys in the hope to have their computers finally cleaned out of malware, faced the cold truth: nothing really changed. The mean nature of malicious software similar to winfixer doesn’t allow to stop annoying alerts even after licensing the program. Of course it never detects any real-life malware because it doesn’t contain any scanning engine. The results with highly dangerous files and registry entries are included in the installation of the software.

Winfixer itself was quite harmless to PC systems, but it managed to live till present days. Partially the long and sad history of this fake software can be accounted for its aggressive techniques used to infect computers. The program uses vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, also distributes itself via spam emails. One important thing about this rogue application is the number of files and registry entries it places into contaminated systems. I counted over hundred of them, but depending on each particular case of infection this number can be bigger. This explains why it is so difficult to remove winfixer manually, and why special tools are needed to accomplish the task.

Volunteer programmers created removers for this type of malware, and their smithfraud fixers are available for free ob many websites. Software companies like a-squared and Malwarebyte’s also developed free software that helps to remove winfixer. But this is not always the case: some of the bigger antivirus makers who control a large share of the market may have ignored this particular spyware, thus potentially increasing the risks of it infecting new computers. Steps to remove winfixer should be observes in the following order.

1. Download and install at least two anti-malware programs that are capable of detecting and removing the fake software. Update the installed applications;

2. Reboot Windows and run it in Safe Mode;

3. Without launching any program and even not opening a folder, run one of the security programs you’ve just installed;

4. Wait until the scan finishes, complete the winfixer removal steps if necessary (depending on the software, this operation can be completed automatically during the scan or immediately after);

5. Restart Windows once again, repeat step 2, but this time use the other antispyware program you’ve installed. This is to have the system scanned with two different scanning engines which were developed with different detection algorithms. If one scanner missed anything, the other should be able to find it, thus ensuring a complete clean-out;

6. Finally, restart and log in normally, as you always do. For best results, run a system file verification, which requites a valid Windows CD. To do that, run sfc /scannow command in Windows command prompt.

Depending on how many files are on your hard drive(s), the total time required to remove winfixer infection, may take up to an hour, or even more.

Follow these steps to remove WinFixer. Learn about the consequences of infection, and what anti-trojan software can prevent the Winfixer disaster from ever happening.

How to Dispose of End of Life Network Hardware Securely

Recent events highlighted in the press demonstrate a very sound business case for employing secure methods of disposal of redundant IT equipment.

A particularly poignant example is that of a second hand server purchased from the internet which contained the personal data of one million customers of the Royal Bank of Scotland, National Westminster Bank and American Express. Not only does this represent a serious breach of confidentiality, but it also breaches legal requirements which now make IT owners responsible for data integrity and computer hardware disposal. Naturally, this event has received endless negative publicity for the companies involved, but has served as a warning shot to everyone responsible for hardware and data integrity.

To avoid problems, it is essential for organisations to work with a company that is fully conversant with and works within the parameters of current WEEE requirements which came into force on 1st July 2007. It is essential that any company offering this service is able to demonstrate its integrity and that it takes seriously its responsibility for secure removal of data from your hardware. Without this reassurance, a company cannot guarantee to its customers that their data is secure and cannot be sure that it will be working within the law.

It can be cost-effective to dispose of IT equipment through an organisation that offers refurbished products and will purchase your redundant kit - thereby providing some return on obsolete assets. A reputable specialist in hardware refurbishment will ensure that any product capable of being recycled will be refurbished and marketed for further use. Any parts not reusable can be broken down and the materials reformed to create a different product at a fraction of the cost to the environment of making new products or of dumping in landfill. As end users are responsible for the disposal of their equipment, great care should be taken to find a partner that has robust methods for dealing with this and that they can provide proof of adherence to WEEE where necessary.

In addition, to the egocentric reasons for ensuring safe retirement of obsolete kit, there are also many altruistic considerations. On average, a person in the UK disposes of 3.3 tonnes of electronic and electrical waste in his lifetime and households and businesses between them throw one million tonnes away each year. By recycling, this can be reduced - the potential for recycling IT products being in excess of 80 %. The cost to the environment encompasses not simply the pollution caused by decaying machines, both physical, aesthetic and chemical, through increased land-fill sites or indiscriminate dumping, but also by the additional pollution from manufacture of new machines using all new materials to replace them.

Should you find your kit is worth little either recycled or resold, or should you have a policy of supporting charitable organisations, there are a number of ways to donate your kit to worthy causes which could not otherwise afford IT or would have to divert much needed cash resources from their other important activities.

Easy Basic Warhammer Starting Tips

Warhammer Online is another massively multiplayer online role playing game which will require lots of learning and adapting. Like most MMOs available, each game has their unique game features and styles. Warhammer Online is very similar to Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcraft. It offers unique quests and missions that you are required to complete along with high end raids and dungeons. The distinct difference between Warhammer Online and any other massively multiplayer online role playing game is that is has a realm vs. realm system which almost no other game has. The race to hit the max level and the best equipments to defeat the opposing faction is on.

During your game play, always make sure to always have room in your bag for loot, weapons and armors fully repaired. The last thing you want is to have to head back to town to repair and wasting time in your travels. If a mob drops some nice loot and you’re out of space would be a killer on your gold. Why would you want to chuck away something because you’re out of space and a really nice item had just dropped? Don’t forget to bring some potions and stock up on consumable items to aid you in your long battles. Don’t forget to always these things checked and ready before leaving any town.

Always grab every mission, quests and kill tasks whenever available. Often, quests you grab can be completed nearby, some which includes kill tasks. If you are already grinding on a specific mob, chances are there’s a quest that will revolve around them. In addition, many quests yield great rewards. Some of these rewards include lots of bonus exp, unique items, weapons and armors that can greatly help you through the leveling process. Biggest benefit of all they may even offer you gold that you can spend on whatever you like.

Once you’ve hit the second chapter of Warhammer Online, pick up a profession as soon as possible. Grabbing a trade skill will help you earn extra gold and benefits. If you grab a gathering profession you can gain extra resources and items that you can sell to earn gold. If you pick up a crafting profession, you use items you loot and craft them into useful pieces to aid you on your journey. There are potions, powders and other magical items that can be crafted which will give you buffs and other benefits.

Quest and level with friends or guilds. It’s always good to travel in a group as you can aid each other when needed. There are many different classes that can offer different benefits. A class can take lots of damage has weak attacks, a caster on the other hand would be the opposite. A healer is always efficient to keep the tank healed up and ready for battle. Having an area of effect class is always beneficial as well as you want to be able to kill large groups of mobs with a few powerful blows. A group effort will yield more exp on kills than on single kills. If you’re in trouble a friend is always available to help. Plus, wouldn’t you find it boring playing a game alone than with a friend?

An introduction Guide to Warhammer Lore

Warhammer Online was created as of a result to another Dungeons and Dragons tabletop type of game where players can control their units to rage into war. Warhammer in its original form has became extremely popular fast in which many books has been published, a role playing game was developed, computer games, jewelry and much more.

The Warhammer world is based on how our own planet exists with some minor adjustments. You can actually tell where each continent would exist and look as if it had gone through an ice age. It is an old world of our own. The most fearsome battles are held in the Northern Empire of Man and the Dwarfs. Even the Elves themselves find Chaos and makes business in the Old World.

The Dwarfs Empire was the largest of its side of the World as well as their power and wealth. Unfortunately their power was weakened by Elven treachery. The Greenskins took them during their fatal state and merged through the great defensive walls of the Dwarfs. The war lasted through centuries and both races have suffered. The dwarfs were forced to flee their home but yet determined to to reclaim what they have lost. The war continues for these 2 feudal races.

The Chaos is the most evil of all races. The Empire has always been the target of the Chaos. They are what can only stand between the Chaos and the destruction of the whole world. Time and time again the Empire has defended and won the battles but the Chaos grows stronger within each battle. Their victory is not much to be glorious of as their wounded and deaths were mourned throughout each upcoming war. The Dwarfs and High Elves alliance are united because of the hard battles that they have to face. United and known as the forces of Order, they vow to diminish the Evil.

The war between the High Elves and the Dark Elves was an ancient civil war that goes further back than anyone could possibly even remember. The stories of the tragic war have gone through many chapters, but however, Malekith the Witch King of the Dark Elves was the rightful heir to the throne of the High Elves. The High Elves disallowed that fact to be as Malekith was too corrupt and unworthy to rule over their race. Malekith was determined to take the rights of the throne and had led to long battles caused by the flames of Asuryan.

In Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, each race has so much hatred which will cause the war to passionate, fierce and desperate. The Dark Elves and Green Skins side with the Chaos to take down the Order in the new upcoming massively multiplayer role playing game. Do you have the evilness inside you to side with the Chaos or are you the righteous person that believes the good will always prevails? Either side you go with, put on that armor and pick up a sword and shear some blood in WAR.

How to Resize Your Images - Smarter Ways

The steps necessary to get the first and always best quality resize are summarized. The correct file formats for saving the output of the image and the pixel size of the digital camera play a great role in determining the quality of your resized photo. These decisions should play a large factor in your goal of getting the smartest resized photo possible.

Digital Pictures in their original format can be very large in size, sometimes from approximately 100kb to 250kb. Sending images with this larger file size can lead to frustration with end-users, who may not be able to download and see the pictures, especially if sent as thumbnails. A better user experience results from pictures that are reduced in filesize to the 20kb to 40kb range, using an online image resizer to resize the images so that the end user is able to quickly download and see the pictures as intended. While there are many free online image resizer programs available, these helpful tips can ensure that the online image resizing process is perfect.

There are an endless number of online picture resizer websites available on the Internet, many of which are free. A difficult decision lies in choosing the best online image resizer available that will resize images online in the shortest amount of time while maintaining perfect image quality. Often these programs will ask for basic input to begin the online image resizing process, with the size of the resized photo being the main input entered. Typically, the photo that is to be resized is uploaded to the online image resizer Web server. The Web application will ask for a custom set of input values, including required size such as length, width, pixel, etc. After entering the required input, and pressing the requisite resize or online image resize button, you will receive your output image. Many online image resizer websites also offer the ability to perform some minor cosmetic changes to the photo so that the quality appears to improve after resizing, however care must be taken, as too many pixels can also make a compressed photo look much more hazy and dull.

The best Digital picture quality results from using the best camera. I personally use a 5 Mega pixel camera to get excellent quality photos. I use an offline resizing source, Photoshop, which I found to be the best offline resizing tool. For those of us who do not have any software for resizing available, there is the easily accessible online image resizer.

There are many offline software packages, in addition to free online picture resizer web applications available on the net. Any one of these can be used for resizing photos, but the correct decisions must be made to choose the smartest ways to resize photos or pictures. Choosing the excellent online image resize tool and correct file format for saving the photos will ensure the best output. It is important to always ensure before sending digital pictures, that the photos are resized in such a way that they can be easily downloaded for viewing on all types of monitors and over different Internet connection bandwidths.

Ways to Protect Your Computer, Both Local and on a Network

Computers are some of the most convenient things that we can have around and many of us cannot imagine living our lives without these modern day conveniences. Along with being convenient, however, they can certainly cause a lot of different problems and if we aren't security conscious as far as our computers are concerned, we can end up in a lot of trouble. This is not only the case as far as the Internet is concerned but is also true whenever we are considering our security on a local level. Here are some things that you can do in order to make your computer as secure as possible.

If you're on a network, perhaps at work or even a local network at home, you need to secure it with a password. These network passwords are commonly known as a WEP key and what they are designed to do is to keep people from logging into your network without your knowledge. It is amazing, the number of individuals who have a wireless home network that is unsecured. All that is necessary is for somebody to drive around with their laptop on, constantly searching for these wireless network signals. Once they are able to find one, it is a simple matter for them to be able to log into it and to steal information from you. Your only line of defense is either too not use a wireless network or to secure it with a key.

You may also want to consider setting up separate accounts on a single computer if there are many different users. The reason why this is such a good thing to do is because many of us that use computers for personal reasons also have children that use the same computers in order to surf the Internet. The last thing that we would want to have happen is for them to unknowingly download spyware programs that will end up stealing our credit card numbers and passwords whenever we log on to the Internet. Keeping your account separate from theirs is a great way to be able to keep it secure.

You should also be concerned about spyware programs and viruses that may be downloaded off of the Internet and that can easily travel through a network and infect other computers. Running a good spyware program as well as an antivirus program that is updated regularly is your best, first line of defense against obtaining one of these nasty little programs. Make sure that you were always running these anti-spyware and antivirus programs, whether you're connected to a network or not. You would be surprised with how many of these things can slip by and end up on your computer.

Computers certainly are a convenience that we could not live without but whenever a security breach happens, that convenience disappears quickly. Make sure that you do everything within your power to protect your personal information and to keep yourself free from the damaging effects of security breaches.

FabulaTech launches USB over Network 3.4.6. The program is ready for download.

FabulaTech, the software development company which specializes in device driver development, application development and systems internals programming for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Embedded operating systems has launched the new version of USB over Network with the minor bugs being fixed and enhanced user interface and program workflow.

The program allows to work with the remote USB devices over a local network or Internet as if they were connected directly to one's local PC. This functionality can be easily integrated into any software.

"Usually, when you need to use any USB device (like scanner, flash-memory, etc) you plug it into USB port of your computer. But for all that, the device is accessible only for the computer it is plugged into. And what if someone else needs to use the same USB device?", comments Alan Rurke, one of the program's developers. "You can unplug USB device from your PC and give it to another user, but according to different circumstances, not always there is a possibility to give USB device to another user, even for a while; or you can allow another user to work with that device on your PC but sometimes it is not possible to allow someone else to work with that USB device on your PC (especially if another user is in the another office, city or country). It is possible to purchase the same USB devices additionally but additional USB devices could be purchased but it depends on the cost of the device and quantity required."

"FabulaTech has resolved this problem in a different extraordinary way", adds Gregory Forge, the developer, "We've created USB over Network which allows to work with remote USB devices over a local network or Internet. All you have to do is to install USB over Network Server on the PC where USB devices are plugged in. USB over Network Client must be installed on the PCs you want to give access to those very USB devices you've already plugged in. That's all". USB over Network Client is free software. One can purchase the license of USB over Network Server, install it on PC where USB device is plugged in and unlimited number of users will be able to work with that USB device. USB over Network is available for Windows and Linux operating systems. For more information visit http://www.usb-over-network.com

5 important things to know about the Network plus certification

1. Why should you even consider doing the Network plus certification?

The Network plus certification is a natural continuation from the A+ certification. A+ teaches you about computers (hardware and software), the net+ teaches you about networking. This is another entry certification alot of people take to broaden their knowledge base before tackling the more advance certifications.

2. CCNA vs Network+ confusion

As both these certifications are about networking, new people in the industry feel confused on which will give them more value for money. The truth is, you can't compare them. The only thing they have in common is that they deal with networking. The Network+ is an entry certification which broadens your foundation. It is vendor neutral. The CCNA is not. It concentrates on Cisco Routers.

Network+ although an entry cert has alot of information - and I mean ALOT. By the time you finish studying for it, you will be sick of network terminology. The CCNA is even more difficult. After studying for this one, you will be subnetting in your head - even when you don't realize it. Know how you hear a song and it sticks in your mind and you can't get it out? Same thing with subnetting.

If you are new to the industry, go for the network+ first.

3. Best way to study

Most IT professionals choose the self study method. If this will be your choice as well, what I recommend is that you buy a good book from amazon but more importantly also try to get hands on experience. Get a couple of computers and network them. Get CBT (computer based training) videos so you can also visually study. The reason I recommend hand-on and visual training is because this certification has a lot of terminology to study and remember and it can become exceedingly boring if you don't keep your hands occupied as well.

4. Where can you book the exam?

All comptia exams are booked through Prometric or Vue. Once you finished studying, go to either website and choose your nearest testing center. Pay the fee and book the exam on your choice of date. Now you are all set. When you go to the training center, arrive 30 minutes beforehand and don't forget to bring 2 forms of ID with you.

5. How long does it take for the certification to arrive?

When you complete your exam at the training center and you pass, they will give you a piece of paper stating you have passed the exam. You can use that on your resume for the moment to show employers you are now Network+ certified. The actual certification will be posted to you from Comptia and this take around 2 to 6 weeks.

Good luck!

Worse Than Setting Your VCR: Home Network Installation

So you've made the decision to install a home network and you're roaring and ready to go with it. But have you done it before? Perhaps the dreams of not fighting over who can go online next, streamlining your office, and sharing files with other computers in your home has you a bit excited. But do you know what type of network is best for you? Do you know the basic principles to installing a network in your home? Do you know how to set up a wireless network? If you answered "no" to any of these questions, then perhaps you should read on.

Network types

First of all, a network allows you to have multiple computers connected to the same internet connection, share files between the computers in your home, print documents through a printer that is connected to a different computer, and share files that are stored on other computers. It seems like a dream come true, doesn't it? But what is the best type of network for you? You have to make the decision of whether or not you want a wireless network or a wired network. If you choose wireless, you have to know how to set it up so that all of the computers can talk wirelessly to the network router. If not all of the computers are wireless capable, then you may have to move to a wired network. With a wired network you have to worry about running wire throughout your home or investing in upgrades for your computers to make them wireless.

You also have to know what type of activities you and your family are going to be doing on all of the computers. This is because you want to invest in a router that can handle the load. If the router cannot handle the load, then you're going to have computers within your home getting booted off of the network.

Network installation

The network installation part can be either easy or complicated. It depends on how you look at it. You have to have an internet connection and you have to know your network type. You also have to know what computers in your home are wireless capable and which are not in case you choose to do the upgrades instead of installing wire throughout your home. If you're setting up a wireless network, the easiest way to connect is if you have Windows Connect Technology through your Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, or Windows 98/ME. Then again, you could be running a different operating system, which can make setting up your network a bit more difficult than if you were running on a Windows operating system.

An alternative

Then again, you could probably save yourself a lot of headaches by hiring a professional to take care of the installation process. A professional will do an assessment to determine what type of equipment you need to give you a network that is complete. If any of your computers need what is called a network adapter to become wireless capable, the installer can help you with that. Once all of the equipment is determined and acquired, the network installer can then run wire or set up your wireless network for you. You'll be connected in no time and the only thing you have to do is reach in your wallet. Fortunately, home network installation is not an expensive endeavor and it takes a lot off of your mind. You don't want to buy all of the wrong equipment, hook it up, and then find nothing works. If you're not sure, turn to a professional so that you know everything is right.

If you plan on creating a home network installation or a wireless home installation for your computer system, seek the professional, certified advice from EasyTechCare.
